What a lovely experience this was. Quite a long hike to get to this spot. Who says you can't use Monorail View Cameras in the field?

If you don't mind, what's the lighting setup?
Of course, really simple set up: Broncolor Pulso Spot 4 with projector lens top left (gives the nice bright / poppy light with even better shadows). 6ftx6ft scrim above the entire set with 2 strip boxes and 1 reflector (3 lights total) shooting through for nice highlights and fill.

„The Americans” from Portrait World series.

Of course, the person in the photo is not an American. And of course, the photo wasn’t taken in the US. This portrait is my conversation with Robert Frank and his „The Americans”. When I was a teenager somewhere in Poland, I got my hands on a copy of Frank’s book that someone had brought over from the US, and I absolutely fell in love with the entire project. It became my obsession. Several decades later, in my studio, I decided to pay homage to those works.

The portrait shows Jasiek, a young fashion designer I met on the street. His face intrigued me so much that I asked if I could take his photo. He was kind enough to agree.
The flag behind him was borrowed from my father-in-law, who worked in the US in the 1970s and brought it back as a farewell gift from his boss.

Graflex Crown Graphic, Kodak Ektar 127mm, diapositive Fuji, Epson scann.

Low Key Portrait Tim Kelly portrait lighting by Nokton48, on Flickr

Robert needed a strong "head shot". Low Key Tim Kelly lighting. 4x6 foot Chimera Softbox Broncolor Impact 41 monolight 90 left degrees to the set, lighting everything. A smaller Chimera 3x4 Softbox Impact 41 monolight 45 degrees camera left one stop brighter in closer as a main light. A passive fill panel right, just right out of the frame 4x8 foamcore hinged together. A standard reflector raw hard light camera back left, creating the rimlight from the backline. Dark Grey Muslin behind. A successful head shot low key. 4x5 Sinar Norma, 240mm F9 Norma Apo Ronar gives an almost clinical look. Ilford HP5 D76 1:1 8x10 fibre print on Fortezo #2 silver gelatin paper Dektol dev Omega DD laser aligned 180mm black Rodagon

Kodak 2402 Plus-X Aerographic Five Inch Perforated, comes in a 350 foot roll. Cut the film in the dark to fit a 5x7 Lisco Holder, then exposed in a 5x7 Sinar Norma, with my 500mm f5.5 Schneider Tele-Xenar. Developed in D23 1:1, loaded into an 8x10 Unicolor Print Drum, and spun on a Unicolor Uniroller. Negative shot at F32 using Broncolor strobes Kelly Portrait lighting. Will be contact printing this, then will enlarge it a bit to check detail. The 500mm lens I have had CLA'ed it is mounted in a Compound #5. I also exposed more film at F22, I will develop that a bit less, to see the differences.

Let's get more pictures in this section.

I have called this picture "RIP Danny". As I was photographing this abandoned foundry in Varndsdorf, Czechia, a Gypsy man of uncertain age came to me and questioned my motives for taking the picture. He said he was the “guardian of the building” and would call the city police if I didn’t leave. I calmly explained to him that I was fully within my rights to be where I was and do what I was doing, and offered to call the police myself, to clarify. Hearing about me possibly calling the police, the Gypsy man changed tack immediately and accused me of being racist and insensitive, for "not giving a damn that Danny had just died..." (whoever Danny was….). I offered my heartfelt condolences (still not knowing who Danny was) and agreed with him about racism being bad. He then took off. As we were driving away minutes later, we passed the Gypsy man walking by the side of the road. I rolled down the window and waved him goodbye. He waved back, still in a “rant” mood but now a bit more friendly. All right, RIP Danny, whoever you were.

(Linhof Technikardan 45S, Schneider Kreuznach Super Angulon 72 mm XL, Ilford FP4 processed in DDX and scanned on Hasseblad Flextight X1).
