I've been doing some deep space exploring the past couple of nights with a Seestar S50 and I thought I'd share the results here.

Hi, Don !
I watched a lot of Youtube footage about that S50, hoping that SWMBO will look the other way while I push on the "buy it now" button :)
Could you elaborate your post-capture workflow ? You are getting .pits files out of the S50, aren't you ?

TIA,
Rafael

Okay, price first. Amazon offers the S50 for $25 more than what we paid for it at our local Astronomy Store (Starizona in Tucson) so I suggest checking locally first. Or accidentally hit the BIN button. It's better to pray for forgiveness than ask for permission.

You get 2-files. The RAW is saved on the internal hard drive of the S50 and a JPEG to what you use as a controller. You have a choice of either your smartphone or tablet (iPad or Android). We choose a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ Plus 12.4 screen (works equally well on our Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra - we just wanted the extra screen size.

The app is one of the easier one that I've used. While the S50 comes with a tripod I find it way too short and just use my regular one; that way I don't have to keep track of multiple tripods.

We shot the Packman Nebula last night staying out for close to 4-hours. Later this morning I'll plug the S50 into my computer (USB C) and transfer the hard drive files. Almost forgot (blame it on lack of sleep). The S50 will automatically stack the files to a finished image rejecting those that have star trails. I find that we shoot for 3-hours and get slightly more than a 1-hr image. Last night we shot 4-hours and shut it down after we completed 67-minutes which is 402 files automatically stacked.

I open the file in Capture One to do minor adjustments before saving it and sending it to Photoshop. Once in PS I use Topaz Studios for more post before finishing up in PS.

Hope this helps. Be prepared to lose a lot of sleep (we got to bed around 1 am this morning and got up around 730.

I'm a little more awake and see that I forgot a couple things.

Pick up a leveling base as it will make life easier.

You'll want a power brick to help the S50 along. We forgot to plug ours in last night and went down in 20% after shooting over 5-hrs

You might also want to consider a dust shield (I picked one up from E-Bay)

I also picked up a long USB cable
