The Winterslag coal mine in Genk (Belgium) was closed in March 1988. It's now a combination of an industrial heritage site and a cultural center. A very interesting combination and lots of spaces open to the public for free. You can even climb one of the elevator towers (~70 meter high) for a small fee.
