I think the image stands on its own, even without anything in sharp focus. Nice painterly quality to it, and to my eye the story is conveyed regardless. My eyes are drawn to the area of the woman's face, particularly the left eye, focus notwithstanding.

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

As nice as the photos are Steve, I don't think I can say I like the way this lens draws. The sharp/unsharp gradient seems to be way too strong (are you maybe doing selective sharpening and/or noise reduction?). It seems like the soft areas are too soft, and the sharp areas too sharp, and the color fringing is visible to me even in the web jpegs (on the ugg boots and in the white areas of the coat). I think I really prefer your shots taken with the older noctilux. It does not seem to have the grace that even the 50/1.4 ASPH has, or certainly not like the best high speed lenses like the 75/1.4 and 110/2 Planar. And please note, this is not about the photos, which are great, it is about what the lens is doing to them! And of course, I am a curmudgeon, so you will have to forgive me that -- I like my lenses a certain way!
My photos are here: http://www.stuartrichardson.com and more recent work here: http://stuartrichardson.tumblr.com/ Please have a look at my book!

Nice shots, and a nice review Steve. Some great images over there on the review. I love that last one (shot with the f1). Love to have both of these, but that's never going to happen for me, so I'm grateful to still have the f1, and more convinced of that in part because of your review. Thanks.

Thanks for posting Steve, nice shots. I have to say I absolutely hate the Noctilux 0.95. I swear I do. Really. At least that's what I keep telling myself. That is, unless I am the benefactor of a wealthy relative's will or win the lottery jackpot, then my opinion is subject to change. Drastically. Man I want one of those.

I think the soft focus suits the almost antique feel of the composition and the light. By the way, I checked out your site - beautiful work.

I think the image stands on its own, even without anything in sharp focus. Nice painterly quality to it, and to my eye the story is conveyed regardless. My eyes are drawn to the area of the woman's face, particularly the left eye, focus notwithstanding.

Great review, photos... and I love your site, Steven. Looking at all the photographs, I prefer the dreamier look of the older Noctilux, despite (or perhaps because?) the fact that the new .95 is sharper and has more kick.

    Thanks much, Lloyd and Leif.

Leif, my wife's sister married a Norwegian and lives in Oslo. We try to make it to Norway every couple of years so that my wife can visit her sister. They graciously drag us around the country for a couple of weeks and then send us on our way. This past trip we spent some time on west coast visiting Ålesund and Brandal (where my brother-in-law grew up).

Here's one from Trollstigen ... a nice place for a picnic, no?

Very nice. I especially like the first two.

(Have you figured out a way to get your son working to earn you one? You know, shoveling snow, raking leaves, mowing lawns, etc. Make it worth his time... tell him you won't show embarrassing childhood photos to his dates in coming years. It's a strategy that's worked for me so far. )

    Hello,

I had a pass to the Wave in northern Arizona for December 8th - was planning on taking the M9 out there.

That morning there was about 8" of new snow and 40-50mph winds. "The Wave" became "The Drift". Not nearly as interesting....

Anyway, wandered around the area for another day to try and make the best of things. Both of these taken with the wate.

All that way south, Steve, only to run into more snow. I'd be depressed ... especially as it was 0F leaving work last night and driving back this morning. Welcome to winter.

I´ve travelled Trollstigen once, when I was 14 or 15 - in an old (already then) Ford Taunus 17M (German Fords made in Cologne). The radiotor boiled half way up. Some road that. We were forced to have a picnic.

Leif, I travelled the road once before about 5 or 6 years ago. Interesting enough, they are working on adding a few tourist attractions at the top including this new overlook that has a clear acrylic or glass railing in front. So you get a nice unimpeded view of the fall down.

A marvellous road indeed, but if you get there, DO NOT just drive back down again; you´ll miss even more spectacular sights!

Drive on south, take the ferry across to Eidsdal, and drive furter south; you´ll soon be far above the timber line again. And then, almost without warning, you round a corner and look right down at the sea in Geirangerfjord, with several waterfalls, and cruising ships looking like toys... On my first visit, I even could look down(!) on a small, passing airplane.

Just don´t try it during winter; the roads will be closed.

Steve - those are amazing shots. Simply fantastic. Both are wall-hangers.

That is one place I've never had a chance to shoot (slot canyons), and definitely want to get there.

Wow! Fantastic shots. I just visited Antelope, but didn't use my M's there. It was my first visit and I wasn't sure what framing to anticipate, so I took zooms. (It is not a good place to change a lens). The WATE (I don't have one) was perfect. Your composition is excellent.

I have shot the Antelope canyons a number of times and I know how difficult it is to get a "fresh" shot.

Your second image with its spectacular sense of motion is the best I have seen for many years. I mean this is not just good, this is spectacular IMHO

The ice rink picture is gorgeous, Victoria! Love it!

And snowfall ... I did know you got snow some places in Texas, but wreaking down in droves like that I had no idea!

    I'm with Leif
Victoria, that IceRink shot is fab - so is the Noctilux shot F1. Also the second shot of the Antelope canyon - these usually make me yawn, but that's great. Steve, I like the second set of shots from the Noctilux, especially the taxis. Not keen on all that vignetting on the last shot.

    all the best

    Wild Polish Ponies . . . .

These were taken with the 90 elmarit, and my new grey M9!!!!

In the last shot they were cantering towards me . . . after the dog, who had to make a fast getaway!

    Jono

As always, great eye and great use of color.

Only question is, did you buy both M9's?
