Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

Thanks very much Jose, mathomas, Matt

@Endre, I really enjoy your car shots. For me perfect light and B&W, thanks and give us more

@Carlos, I like IR and tryed it with me Nikon D70 years ago, but I never have been satisfied with the IQ, they were just not sharp enough for my expectations.
This one I would give more contrast to achiefe a really black sky?

    @Knorp
great shots from the shipyard and the right light for this subject.
I could spend hours there taking pictures

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

    A day of first!

My first camera in over a year (I suffered a total loss in a fire), my first day out with my new M8, my first digital camera and my first ever images posted in any forum!

I previously shot Mamiya medium format film bodies for 10+ years using an external meter. I am not yet happy with my exposures using the in camera meter nor have I fully adjusted to focusing the rangefinder - but this is just my first day out and these skills will come with time. Until I learn the quirks of the M8 meter I will simply confirm my exposures using the Sekonic I just purchased from Sharokin here in the forum.

Please feel free to comment and enjoy...

@Kitok, very good for a start, the IR is my favorit!

You will enjoy digital, as long as you don't miss the smell of developer
and if you have complicated light, just use bracketing.

OK, I found a few images that I took before my sensor cover cracked, and a few that I could crop the crack out of. Sigh. I hope it can get fixed before I go to Yosemite in two weeks. I'm calling Leica tomorrow to see what can be done.

The FEBO Automat (popular in the Netherlands); M9 + 24 'lux wide open:

I liked the play of the "High Times" sign and the high steeple of the Oude Kerk. M9 + 24 'lux wide open:

The famed red light district, appropriately lit in red. M9 + 24 'lux wide open:

Finally, I have to cheat and throw in this image I took this morning with my backup camera, the Panasonic GF1 with the 20mm f/1.7 lens @ f/2.8:

@Jeff, I feel sorry for you broken M
I wonder, how fast Leica can fix it.

(should I buy a new car or a 24 lux)

I could not resist, playing with this one a bit in CS4

Jeff: +1. The Amsterdam shots are great. At least you salvaged a little. At first, I thought the swans were fake! Great city, isn't it? Cheers, Matt.

Knorp, there was a man there feeding the swans, and they came streaming in. A few minutes later, there were even more swans! He had a big bucket of food, and was throwing a lot in there!

Thanks Matt. That swan shot is uncropped, but the darkness mostly hides the crack. If you look at the canal wall in the lower right, you can see the crack.

Seattle's Olympic Sculpture Park. Alexander Calder's "Eagle" and the start of a very long train loaded with wheat (probably for the ship anchored in the bay). Cheers, Matt.

Jeff; There's a dark and a light diagonal line. Is it one of those? Cheers, Matt.

It's both. The light line appears to be the crack, and the dark line a shadow of the crack--or something like that. Wide open it gives that effect; stopped down it's just a thin black line.

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

Well, today we had the most severe hailstorm in the 12 years I've been in Perth.

Taken with the Nokton 1.1 at f/2 I think.

The majority of the stones were golfball sized, with a couple being around tennisball sized. Widespread damage and flooding, luckily my house and everyone I've been able to contact is ok

Great storm pictures, Daniel. I used to get storms like that when I lived in the midwestern US--always impressive. Glad you didn't suffer any damage.

That looks familiar, Daniel. When we lived in Wisconsin, my wife's car was actually totalled by a hail storm that had golfball-sized hail.

dierk: The b/w studies of "the dishes" are terrific.

Kitok: Welcome to the forum, and the strange and wonderful world of rangefinder photography. Very nice images... looking forward to much more.

Jeff: Nice shots from Amsterdam. Love the red light swans... a certain irony there.

Carlos: Great IR, and I too prefer the second version. (good to see you back in Leicaland!)

Pham Minh Son: And welcome to the world of rangefinders to you as well. Looking forward to much more like these nice images you've posted.

Matt: These Olympic Sculpture Park shots are nice, I like the second in particular. Love to see the Olympic Range, which was honestly a fairly rare sight when I lived there.

Daniel: Amazing clouds!! Glad you're ok. I, too, had a car trashed by a hailstorm many years ago. And that hail was not nearly as large as what you're describing. Still, not something I'd like to experience again, although I'd love to see clouds like those.

Good work all. Looking forward to much more.

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

Mathomas, terrific dog and old car photos, especially the last one (b&w dog).

Matt, very nice Museum of Glass photos. I usually prefer b&w, but in this case, it really like the subtle blues in the color shot.

Carlos, really liking your IR shots. Got me itching to try some.

Bart, excellent NDSM shipyard series. The last one is my favorite, probably because of the obvious extreme wide angle.

Dierk, it's amazing what you can do with a a couple of clean dishes. Simple, sleek, and timeless.

Kitok, welcome on-board. Excellent shots. The second is my favorite of the group.

Jeff, glad to see you're able to salvage some shots from the cracked sensor. You did an excellent job of cropping them. The last one with the tulips is my favorite of the bunch.

Pham Minh Son, fine shots with the Leica. Looks like you're more than comfortable with the smaller format.

Thrice, incredible hailstorm shots (hope you didn't suffer any serious damage). I particularly like the last one.

Endre, I have to agree with Lloyd. That last shot is truly special in the way it captures the light.

Steve, outstanding shots with the noct, as always. I couldn't pick a favorite. All three are my favorite.

Daniel: Incredible shots of the storm. The tonality makes it even more ominous.

Jeff: Thanks. I quickly grabbed the camera bag and ran out of the house with my only lens as the Nocti f/1. Probably not the best choice.

Lloyd: Thanks. See them quite a lot these days.

Endre: Thanks. As Lloyd said, the light in that photo is exquisite!

Carlos: Like the third IR the most.

Steve: All three are great; but, i keep going back to the second one. something about the lit up clock, the street light, and the bokeh background.

    David: Thanks.

    Cheers, Matt.

Matt, I see you got out today (or this week-end?) down south. Lovely images. I was in Portland with my 5D, so I didn't have a chance to play with the M this week-end. Lovely to see that you did. Great sculpture park images as well!

And a few more from the edgier corners of Seattle:

Truth be told, many of these shots were taken at the "Free Wall" in Seattle, where Graffiti is permitted....fascinating place....the kids didn't mind me shooting them...

Ashwin: Great shots. Love the skateboarder and the broken slab of granite on the tracks. Where's the "Free Wall"? Cheers, Matt.

Do you remember the Bridge Motel?

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

Wow, I believe the bridge motel was about a block from where I currently live!

Great capture, Matt. The Seattle Freewall is really close to the Krispy Kreme donuts, just south of the stadiums in Georgetown/Sodo area. It's about a block off the main drag there. I found it by happenstance (shooting down by the tracks) and discovered that it's a place for graffiti artists to express themselves without fear of any prosecution....

Ashwin, nice stuff. I particularly like the kid with the cell phone and the bikers, but I would like to see them in color. I'm kind of a full color guy.
