Thanks Steve. There was so much new snow on top of old layered snow with high winds there were avalanches waiting to happen. Do have one photo of a very wide avalanche at the top of a peak and with ski tracks down the side of it. Eleanor

Your pictures are a real treat - and I loved the sherpa tribute, it's always seemed to me that they were the real unsung heroes of the himalayas.
    Eleanor
Love the late skiing shots - make me really jealous too, I rang a friend this afternoon and he was on top of a piste at Val d'Isere (grrrrr).

Still, the blossom is just coming out in our garden, so perhaps I shouldn't complain. It's so pretty that it's easy to forget that you actually are supposed to make the composition and colour work!

Here are a couple of shots from today with the M9 and the 75 'cron (hopefully I remembered)

In the mountains, one climbs high..sleeps low. Why? To let the body acclimatize to the altitude. We had descended to rest below and start our climb again.

The tents below are at about 5400 meters, as we look down on them.
Mount St. Elias is around 5490 meters. I think we are above that. What say you.

The climb is becoming hard, very hard for Rayyan. Each step takes a lot
of effort. Breathing also takes an effort. We take a different route. We are
at 5600 meters. Mt. Logan in the Yukon is around 5900 mts. Denali is 6200
meters. We are stepping into the land of the moraine. Thick Glacial ice, millions of years old. We walk over granite and ice. Slippery, have a fall
and the sharp granite will puncture your skin.

It is cold. The going is slow...very slow. The Guardians are watching. We feel it.

Climb high...sleep low. We shall have to retrace our steps. We are at 5750
meters. Climbing...over on the other side of the ' small ' rock on your extreme right. Slowly. very slowly. The Guardians of Shangri La do not give
up their secrets easily. They want to test you...to your limit; and then some more.

We are at 5800 meters...and climbing.
Powerful stuff, both words and images. Thank you for sharing the journey... and the lessons.

Eleanor: Thank you for your kind comments. Dear lady, of course you can
climb much higher; mountains are mere obstacles. We are made of sterner
    stuff.

    Take care.

On the way to Shangri La...#8

    We were at 5800 meters.

Climb high..sleep low. The sun sets across the peaks of Shangri La. We can see the moon. The whole world around us takes on a majestic appearance.

A new day.. we start another climb. Rayyan has blisters on both of his feet.
He is tired. His breathing is causing him problems. We have made very slow progress. But we have reached 5910 meters. We stop after traversing behind a mini avalanche...

Rayyan wants me to continue. He and a Sherpa intend to return to where
we rested last night. Rayyan tells me I could make it to Danali. I know for myself that I can.

I look at Rayyan...then at the peaks that surround us. I can hear the guardians whisper. A little further, says the voice ..and you are there..

We have been on this journey for a long time. One month. But we started
another journey 37 years ago. The guardians have their codes; we have ours. They open the gates of Shangri La for both of us..or for neither.
One gate was never an option, and never will be.

Yes, we were close very very close. Almost touch it.

We took one last look. Rayyan glanced at me, held my hand and we started
our descent. 5910 meters down. There would be another Shangri La.

I'm having a difficult time processing all this... my head is swimming. The images are powerful, and beautiful, and had they been posted alone, I would have been impressed. The story, however, is so much, much more, and the images seem only a context in which to place the story. Yes, I beleive I now see "the answer", and the multiple layers to the answer. I feel grateful... no, blessed that you two shared this with us. My wife has been following as well, and finished reading this latest installment in tears, shared tears.

Thank you (although those words seem somehow inadequate to the feeling) for risking to share this with us. Thank you very much.

Rayyan (and beautiful wife), Lloyd put this so well...I will only add that my husband and I have been following your journey together, too. We just want to say thank you for sharing this. You two are fantastic!!!

Something totally different from the snow stuff I've sent. Drove to Historic Leadville, Colorado for lunch at Wild Bill's today and cruised around town shooting some of the historic architecture. All done with my 75 cron.

Back in 1969 my wife and I moved to Colorado Springs for our first stint in Colorado. We both loved skiing but had no money. The only place we could remotely afford was a small ski area near Leadville called Cooper Hill. It's only claim to fame (other than being super cheap) was that it had been the site of Alpine training for WWII soldiers.

The photos brings back many wonderful memories of a time simpler.

Woody, you expressed that I like to show when I photograph things like this....a time simpler, not so fast paced and pressured. I have been wanting to photograph around Leadville for some time and I must go back...it is so rich in history with lots of photographic opportunities. eleanor

Matt: Excellent color and visual draw in. You and the 21mm do sing along.

Eleanor: Brilliant set. Nostalgic. As memorable as the times it depicts. I guess I would have had to use the very back door.

    Thanks folks for sharing.

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

On the road to the Chiricahua National Monument. Found out it's a 2 1/2 hr drive from my house to the Chiricahuas. This a more of a "do" area than a "see" in that while you can see some of the rock formations from the scenic drive you really have to take the time and walk/hike out to see the good stuff. I got here mid morning and will leave sometime Thursday (staying in Willcox which is 35 miles NW).

    More to come.

Don, you're in for a treat. Take your time, take some long, lazy trails, and tread in the steps of Geronimo.

Endre/rayyan/Steve/YamasDigital/Lloyd: Thank you one and all for your kind comments!

Endre: Great B&W tulip photo. The three in front and the OOF behind are very evocative and create an impression of a field of colorful tulips.

Re: The All New More and More Fun With Digital M Images

Peter - I totally agree with you. I took a short 3 1/2 hr walk starting at Massai Point the kept on Ed Riggs trail then on to Inspiration Point Trail but didn't make it all the way as I was running out of water. Temps were in mid to lower 70's with some cloud coverage. The walk into the area around Toten Canyon was typical in that it was all down hill till I decided to call it quits and turned around. I start out tomorrow with the Heart of Rocks loop in mind.

Sandy & I were in the area early 2008 before we went to Alaska and stayed at Cochise Stronghold then. This entire area is much like visiting an old cliff dwelling in that you can't help but feel the presence of those who were here first.

This is the first trip I've taken carrying only the Leica M9 (okay I also have the IR but no MF). I knew I'd be walking/hiking for several miles at a time and wanted to travel as light as possible. I had my camera bag slung over my shoulder with the tri of lens, a spare battery and of course the M9; I also carried a monopod, water (not enough for what I wanted to do) as well as my sat phone (for just in case). Legs and knees ache however the shoulders feel fine which is what I expected from such a light load.

    More tomorrow

Tried and (very)dirty so shower then early bed.

    Don

Thanks Matt I'll post more tomorrow

Been a while since I've posted here. I've been spending a lot of time getting by blog working again after it crashed last Thursday. The fix involved moving to a new directory on my server so if you've been following it the link in your "favorites" may be broken. You can click on the link below my signature to get back to the blog and refresh your favorites if you wish.

I've also started posting to the Nikon forum: I bought a D700 with a fast 50mm to deal with very poor light situations - typically events.

Here is from Monday April 19. M9+35mm cron pre asph. v4, three frame stitch.
