Re: More and more fun with M8 images

Thanks! That's the 75 lux. And the shot was taken at the OTHER Fort Knox, a civil war era fort on the Penobscot River in Maine. (here's a snapshot from the observation tower of a new bridge that shows the fort on the left edge of the frame)

And for the record, there's a little manipulation going on in this shot. I made a separate layer in PS3 for the B&W conversion and then adjusted the opacity of it until just a hint of the color layer beneath it began to show through. It seemed right for this particular shot.

Yea.. that's my preference.. but the chocolate doesn't quite come out as 'chocolate' in the b/w rendition

Here is some more fun with the M8 (and M8 files), all heavily cropped.
First one with the 50 Lux pre-asph, next two with the Summarex. What a blast!

The Swallowtail shot shows so much depth. I just love the OOF rendering of the Summarex. The colors are stunning.

Boy both of these lenses are superb! I have both and if you notice in my M lens sale they are not there. They are in my cold dead hands.

Jim - I have looked at your series many times now and I keep coming back to the black-and-white one. The processing is just superb. Everything about it just fits the image and the story so well. Very nicely done.

So Charlie, now for the $64,000 question (that was an old TV game show from the 60's and 70's for our foreign viewers):

    Which 50 is you favorite?

Re: More and more fun with M8 images

Jack - how can I pick a favorite when I only have two!
    Unfair question.
The 50 pre-asph gives great results consistently, exactly what I expected from it after seeing images from several sources. I love it.
The 50 Summarit is constantly surprising me, I cherish it.

John - The images above are all crops, two are maybe even 100%. I do have difficulty but probably more due to my poor technique and inexperience than attributes of the equipment. I did miss a lot when shooting this series. There was some wind as well.

No, I only use an IR filter on the Zeiss 25. I do not have one for any of my other lenses.

Jim, his skin looks almost translucent, kind of like and eggshell in the B&W... Not sure how I feel about that, but I definitely prefer the B&W to the color.

I also like the B&W better although that is not to say I think something is wrong with the color image. Just my preference for this particular image.

You can be a grandfather legally at 32 . . . being a REAL old fart (like me) takes years of practice (and there's no guarantee of grandchildren).

I am 71 and counting. I will let you know when you are actually an "old fart." By the way, this is the saying my mom, who is 91 and still at home fending for herself, tells me when I tell her I am getting old(er) She tells me basically to get a life, she will tell me when I am old. And if she believes this, how old will she be when she tells me LOL!

God bless truly old(er) folks. We earned getting to where we are.

    Thanks MOM

    Love

    Cheers,
I anm with Jack on this one. The B&W looks like some of your IR work. It is probably better in color, or you need to train yourself not to use the IF workflow on all B&W

I didn't think you were old enough to be a grandfather!

actually, normal B/W workflow.. That's the tone skin takes when using a red filter

Jim, if you have a second, try converting that photo just using the B&W Gradent Map in Photoshop with a slight curves tweak afterwards ... I'd be curious to see the results.

A couple from tonight. My son was taking sailing lessons all summer and won this trophy for winning a number of races.

    I used a 35mm Summicron ASPH and a sf20 flash.

He is looking more and more like me as he gets older. He is only 9 and by the time he is a teenager I suspect he will be taller than me. He was 11 pounds 5 1/2 ounce and 23 3/4" tall when he was born.

I liked the pictures not only because my son was in it, but the expression of the girl on the left. In the second photo she is telling Gordon to kiss the trophy.

It is kind of fun to have followed your posts all the way back to the FM Guy Mancuso thread to watch your son grow. It shows just how fast time marches forward.

Anyway, congrats to your son and to you for providing an environment where he can grow in such a positive way. Sailing is awesome.

It's scary Woody I just signed my daughter up 18 now for cosmetology school. These kids grow like weeds and we keep shrinking.

Congrats to your son Robert he is growing pretty fast.
