i posted that just as i was set to travel for the month.

if nobody else starts a thread, i promise to do so for all the listed focal lengths (unless somebody has a better breakdown) at the beginning of June.

whilst it's great to have this all-in-one thread, i do know i search out focal lengths i'm interested in getting and sometimes that's difficult to find despite the wonderful search engine.... then again, i've been accused of being a lens nerd/snob and seem to see things others swear i can't it doesn't bother me in the least. i i'm just mad about the differences in glass and love to share the passion!

Not yet, but no reason not to start one. If you have images with one or more of those lenses, start a thread, and we'll go from there. (Admin, any reason not to do so?)

No reason at all start a thread on any lens you want , we love to see images here and always share knowledge of any lens. Let it rip

BTW it's your home too, if it feels good than do it.

Leif -- there's a thread in the Analog forum that's for film images (though we all always enjoy seeing them anywhere). just pointing you there, in case you want to see what others are doing with the various M's.

Jono -- good to see you reunited with your baby! i feel that way about my Epson, which took a side trip to Papeete. when it returns from service, i am wondering if it will start capturing images like Gauguin.

At any rate, it's good to have it back.
Cam, if your printer starts printing images like Gauguin - you'd better make sure they're signed, and if not, send it straight back!

More 18mm shots. They were taken in and around the Wynn and Encore hotels in Vegas.

Different processing this time. I was trying to figure out how Jono gets those wonderful dark skies, and it progressed (or regressed) from there.

    Hi All,

Wow, a lot of progress since I last saw the thread.

    Jono/Jim/Leif,

    Very nice photographs.

    David,

Again, really nice results from the 18mm. Are you using an external finder with it?

    Steve,

Congratulations on your new lens. I have often been tempted by this lens as 35mm really is my focal length but all the front/back/shift horror stories scared me off. I look forward to seeing some of your results.

Re: The All New More and More Fun w/M8 Images

Thanks, Steve, Lloyd, and Ed. The 18mm is a good fit for Vegas where everything is already bigger than life.

Ed, I sprung for Leica's 24mm viewfinder after checking with David Farkas to see that it worked well with the 18mm lens. I wear glasses, and I'm still not comfortable using the 28 cron with the built-in viewfinder (I have to move my head around a lot to see the complete frame). I figured I might be able to also use the 24mm viewfinder with the 28 cron if I mentally compensate for the difference.

Re: The All New More and More Fun w/M8 Images

I used the processing from the last batch of Vegas shots and applied it to some Los Angeles images from late March. All were shot with the 28 cron from an open-air tour bus. Focusing was a challenge because the bus didn't stop except for stop lights or heavy traffic. It was my first trip with the Leica, so I was also still getting used to the focus mechanism.

    David,

Excellent photographs and thanks for the info on the viewfinder; I wear glasses too and while I do not have a 28 or 24 mm lens looking at the framelines would be quite hard for me to.

Nice one, Lloyd. I didn't think I would ever buy a longer lens for my Leica. I may have to rethink that. It's a beautiful shot. Do you use a magnifier with the 90mm?

Here are some more from the LA-area bus tour back in March. You can see the bus reflected in the window of the first image. The focus is off on the second one, but I like it anyway.

More nice work... I really like your conversions.

Thanks for the comments. I do have a 1.25 magnifier, but in truth, I don't always take the time to put it on, and didn't here. I was of the same mindset originally, as well, and never used anything longer than a 50mm on my Leicas. However, I've really enjoyed both my 90 and my 75mm lenses. Wonderful bokeh, great for portraits and landscapes as well. I have used a number of lenses in these focal lengths, and keep coming back to the CV 90, which isn't fast at only 3.5, but the results have made it a keeper. Same for the CV 75/2.5 Heliar. Such a great lens, and the only 75 I've used which I prefer is the 75 lux, although it's no contest when it comes to size. The Lux is huge, and the CV is tiny, plus you could buy 10 of the CV for the price of a used Lux. Work a look for sure.

    David, F1.0, Lloyd, and others,
You folks are getting some really nice shots and wonderful B/W conversions on things with all of your cameras and lenses. Really like some of the contrasts and stuff in the conversions.

Found an older shot I had taken with the Noctilux BEFORE I was able to get it into proper shape with respect to focus. It was hit or miss back then, but I think I have it worked out a bit now.

Here's another of the same Japanese Maple, but taken with the CV 75/2.5 Heliar @ 2.5:

Very nice image Lloyd, you have posted many excellent images taken with the 75 2.5 in the close focusing range, with a smooth OOF rendition.

I tried the 75 myself and liked the OOF rendition in close wide open, but found the middle distant image to have a harsher look (stopped down a stop or two), and did not buy the lens as a result.

Have you had a similar experience ?

Your images always have me wondering if my assessment was too hasty

Hmm... interesting. Not something I've noticed, to be honest. I do tend to shoot this lens wide open most of the time, however.

I decided to give this lens a try based upon Sean Reid's review. I LOVE the 75 cron, but for the difference in the money, and the wonderfully compact nature of the CV, it was no contest, as I had my sights on some other, more expensive Leica glass at the time. I've never been disappointed in my choice, and a friend of mine in Toronto, Harald Benz, who is, by his own admission, a total lens whore, tried it, and tells me he LOVES it as well... and he's a very picky guy, when it comes to lens quality.

    Seascape,

Intrigued by your comments, I took these two shots with the CV 75/2.5 Heliar from a little farther away, and at f4 and f5.6, respectively. Not really "middle distance", but I'm interested in your take on the rendering.

    First @ f4:

    Here @ f5.6:

I had already posted some images of this Circus Circus trapeze artist, but wanted to try some different ones with this new style of processing.

Nice. I particularly like this one. So, you gonna share what you're doing here?

Well Lloyd, I certainly like the WO shot best, but although test shots I tried were at were in the 15-20 ft range, I think the 5.6 shot gives more of the busy OOF that I saw.

In reality I just did a half an hour walk around from the camera store, and have wondered ever since if my impressions were wrong.

    Thanks for the response.

Lloyd, man that CV 75 looks like a real winner, and just as nice as the Leica 75 2.5 as far as quality goes.

David, that is some crazy processing but it is pretty freaking cool and works with those shots. Nice.

I guess the short answer is "I'm not sure what I'm doing." I was messing around in Lightroom and liked what I came up with. Now I paste those same settings into other images for a starting point and then mess around until the settings suit that particular photo.

Some of the settings are fairly extreme. For the photo you mentioned, I have Recovery at 4, Fill Light at 92, Blacks at 49, Brightness at 50, Contrast at -18, Clarity at 57, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is pumped up with Highlights at 0, Lights at 39, Darks at 11, and Shadows at 32. For the third image in that group, I have Recovery at 48, Fill Light at 64, Blacks at 36, Brightness at 50, Contrast at 57, Clarity at 71, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is the same as the other image. And for the first image in that group, I have Recovery at 73, Fill Light at 57, Blacks at 27, Brightness at 50, Contrast at 73, Clarity at 83, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is the same as the other two.

These settings make some images look awful. For others, they look crisper with an inner glow, though you lose mid-tone detail.

Here's an example. I shot this a few weeks ago at the Las Vegas Convention Center with the 18mm. The first was processed my usual way -- first with Capture One, then Lightroom, and then Silver Efex Pro. With the second one, I loaded the DNG file directly into Lightroom and applied the settings (with no Capture One or Silver Efex Pro adjustments). In this case, I don't think the second one is necessarily better -- only different.
