Some of the settings are fairly extreme. For the photo you mentioned, I have Recovery at 4, Fill Light at 92, Blacks at 49, Brightness at 50, Contrast at -18, Clarity at 57, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is pumped up with Highlights at 0, Lights at 39, Darks at 11, and Shadows at 32. For the third image in that group, I have Recovery at 48, Fill Light at 64, Blacks at 36, Brightness at 50, Contrast at 57, Clarity at 71, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is the same as the other image. And for the first image in that group, I have Recovery at 73, Fill Light at 57, Blacks at 27, Brightness at 50, Contrast at 73, Clarity at 83, and Vibrance at -100. The Tone Curve is the same as the other two.

These settings make some images look awful. For others, they look crisper with an inner glow, though you lose mid-tone detail.

Here's an example. I shot this a few weeks ago at the Las Vegas Convention Center with the 18mm. The first was processed my usual way -- first with Capture One, then Lightroom, and then Silver Efex Pro. With the second one, I loaded the DNG file directly into Lightroom and applied the settings (with no Capture One or Silver Efex Pro adjustments). In this case, I don't think the second one is necessarily better -- only different.

Thanks for the info, David. Always interesting to see what others are doing. You make a good point about the two images... one not better, only different. Had I seen either alone, I would find much to like either way. I love the subtle light on the sides of the first, which tends to emphasis the vanishing point effect. The second is much more dramatic, and the strong detail in the carpet is especially impressive.

Always enjoy your images. Thanks for sharing.

Four shots from last weekend, at the summit of Mount Pilatus, Switzerland, M8 + new 24 Elmar and CV 15.

Note the cogwheel railway (the steepest in the world) toiling up the slope in #1

Some odds and ends. The first two are from the LA-area trip with the 28 cron (off the tour bus now). The third and fourth are from the Adventuredome in Las Vegas with the Leica 18mm. I've been kicking these four images around, trying to figure out how best to process them.

    These really are wonderful.

Which was shot with the CV 15? I like the fact that I can't tell!

Here's another one I've been mulling over. Couldn't get the processing right. It's an interior shot of the Encore hotel in Las Vegas. Used the Leica 18mm.

This is the beach at Marco Island in south Florida. It rained most of the time we were there...don't ever go with me to a resort; I bring the lousy weather with me. However, it did make for several attractive sunsets.

M8, 28 Elmarit ASPH. Processed in Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro.
    Thanks for looking,

Ron Those are great shots. When I went there about 15 years ago we had fog. Got to the top and you were inside a cloud. The boat ride to Lucerne was amazing. I keep saying "people actually live on this lake..what a place."

Found an older shot I had taken with the Noctilux BEFORE I was able to get it into proper shape with respect to focus. It was hit or miss back then, but I think I have it worked out a bit now.

    Nice work Seascape,

The balance of the shadows, highlights and contrast really makes this B&W have a 3D-ish result.

Thanks for the interest Cyberguru, not a lot of processing really, B&W conversion in PS and then adjusted by eye to what I would like to see from a wet darkroom print.

I think that the quality of light helps......taken in open shade with that giant softbox in the sky

The way you present the two pictures has an interesting effect. It looks like an old-fashioned stereograph, viewed in the home parlor with a wooden viewer. Nice.

Given the love of gadgetry in the photoworld, I'm surprised that none of the "HDR IR kitty-pet" photographers in the world have added a splitter to their gearset and posted stereo HDR IR Kitty images. But I don't think I'll pursue that thought any further.

And the image by Jaapv that appeared just above your note (see below)

is also very 3-dimensional. I'm interested in exploring the effect that seeing in 3D has on composition of a picture in 2D. The oldtime wet plate photographers (take Carleton Watkins for example) shot both stereo views with a small camera and giant pictures with 20x28" wet plates with a giant camera. Naturally they shot a lot of stereo and relatively few giant pictures, choosing the spots that seemed to offer the best possible view, and learning their exposures from the stereo shots that they had taken. Those two sizes were the most profitable in that era, since stereos sold in quantity and big pictures went into presentation albums for very rich customers. One result is that some of the old big pictures contain multiple layers, with some of the picture seen through a frame of near scene, just as was most dramatic when making a stereo. Modern one-eyed photographers see differently, at least until Lee Friedlander started shooting through fences and foliage at subjects beyond, but suspended in foreground texture.

Blooming beautifully... and wonderfully captured. Love the blue in the background, really adds.
