New Summarit M Lenses so good it's scary.

For some reason, since I already have a 50 mm Summilux and Noctilux,I decided to buy a Summarit 50 mm. Reasoning that the small size was worth trying the lens.
I was amazed at the ease of focus and color qualities etc. The lens really seemed to like being on the M8.
Well, I just added the 35 mm Summarit to my collection and it's every bit as good as the 50.
I was looking at some shots I took around the house and decided to write this because I got so excited at how good the 35 was, I needed to tell somebody. These lenses are small and sharp with great tonality.
It would be nice if I was as happy with the Noctilux but maybe some more time with it is necessary.
Someday an M9 might change these eqations but I hope not.

So I think now we are at least 3 here who love that 35/2.5

Interesting also that with both my Summarits (35 and 75) I never had any focus problems while several of my more expensive lenses had to go to Solms for a calibration of the focus.

Did you directly compare the 50 Summilux and Summarit by any chance?
I am however very happy with the 50/1.4asph so personally I dont see why I should add a Summarit.

I had a 35 summarit and now have a 35 summilux asph. I honestly think I prefer the rendering of the summarit, I just needed the speed for practicality sake :\

I'm glad to hear what you say about the 50 summarit, I have a 50/1.1 nokton and am looking for a cheap compact and sharp 50 for hiking/travel.

I have the little 35, and it's a lovely lens - not too brutal, but splendidly crisp, tiny and lovely to use.

These economical summarits are a great buy, no compromises except the fast aperture, but with lots of consolations in terms of cost and focusing.

I have loved the boke of the little 35 'Rit from the first tests Guy did with it. I keep thinking if I can somehow justify getting one, but I do have a nice 35 Lux ASPH, so the answer is always no

A couple of 35 Summarit pics

    and a 75 Summarit pic

These Summarit lenses are the bargains of the Leica world and are very, very good lenses.

Simon, those images are beautiful!!! The Summarit line are simply fantastic lenses. If you do not mind 2.5, they are a no brainer and every bit as good as the Summicron/Summilux (at 2.5).

Thanks Helen. Here's another with the 75 Summarit:

These Summarit lenses really are exceptionally good. I haven't used the 50 or 90 but have no reason to assume they would perform any less well.

Thanks I got the Summarit earlier this year. The M-Summarits (35/50/75/90) are the new lenses from Leica so there are no versions as such - they are all new design.

    oris,
sclamb is correct that these are four all new Summarits ( from 2007). To clarify further, these are all f/2.5 apertures. There was a Leitz Summarit 50 f/1.5 (1949-1960) from earlier times that you may have seen. That one is a completely different design.

I have the 75mm Summarits, which I purchased from SteveM8. Which is sharp and has great color. I love it.

Any plans for a wide angle Summarit? I wouldn't mind a 24mm or 21mm variant personally.

Well, I'm sold. Absolutely beautiful images and superb use of light Simon. Thanks for sharing!

I have all the fast stuff, and love them for my wedding photography ... but for travel and more normal everyday shooting these Summarits seem a match made in heaven. A 35 added to my WATE and 90/2.8 would make for a diverse and easy to carry/use kit.

Here goes another smashing of the Piggy Bank" in the name of Leica. Now where is my hammer?

    Marc,
I think the combination of some faster glass and some Summarits works very well.
I now often carry the 24/1.4, 35/2.5, 50/1.4 and 75/2.5 and it is a very flexible combo.

Re: New Summarit M Lenses so good it's scary.

I got a 35mm summarit a month or two ago, and I have to say that I am also very impressed. It is just as good as the summilux at similar apertures. I have a very hard time telling the difference.
For example, here are two photos, one taken with the 35/1.4 ASPH, the other with the 35/2.5. I believe both are at 2.5. Slightly different crops due to being lazy with lining up the film in the scanner...

Summarit first, then summilux, but I doubt anyone could tell the difference without me saying so. They have slightly different distortion (I think the summarit has more), but really things are very close. If I had to have one, it would be the summilux for the speed, but I now often just grab the summarit for daylight shooting since it is so much smaller and lighter.

Re: New Summarit M Lenses so good it's scary.

Stunning photos, especially the one of the girls and the butterfly. Seems that once people get over the stigma of these "budget lenses" that they're actually very good. I don't recall anyone ever saying "these lenses stink" in any way.

Granted, they're not the fastest lenses. But there's a LOT to be said for slower glass... They're often ridiculously sharp, from wide open. Not to mention they're smaller, cheaper and lighter.

I love my fast glass though, and the Summarits wouldn't be my first choice, personally... But as a second lens, definitely. YMMV, of course.
