Why is the product number not on Leica lenses?

Or, is it somewhere where only the cognoscenti can find it? Granted, the box has it, but shouldn't it be on the lens, itself?

I've had Leicas for 30 years, but just now realized this.

Roger,
just checked my 50 summilux (11892) and 24 elmarit (11898), but the product numbers are embossed in the barrel ... Recent lenses seem to have it, but not the older lenses like 85 summarex or 90 tele-elmarit, though.
Kind regards.

Interesting, Knorp. My latest lens is the 90 mm Elmarit S/N 3678XXX and I can't find any product number on the barrel. Only thing on the barrel is the "Lens made in Germany" statement. Seems to be the case with all 6 of my lenses, (3) M and (3) R.
