    New RF countdown......(Canon?)......

Jeff Ascough tweeted about a new full-frame digital RF with a 35 f1.2 lens at intro. Magnesium build w/ 2 more lenses to be introduced.

    http://www.canonrumors.com/2010/03/canon-rangefinder/

    .......if not Canon, maybe Zeiss??

He also mentioned AF - so most likely Canon.

Don't rule out Sony. They'll try anything at least once.

It's amazing no one has built a digital version of the Contax G2 yet. I'd be the first in line for one of these whether it's built by Canon, Nikon, Zeiss, or Voigtlander.

I would point out that there has been a completed Contax G3 sitting on the shelf at Kyocera a few years now. Supposedly it was packed with new innovations in AF electronic rangefinder technology. Could provide an excellent basis for a AF digital rangefinder.

As for the "magnesium alloy shutter", it is not such a far retched concept. Metal shutters certainly exist, as we all know. A magnesium metal shutter would be lighter and stiffer. It would therefore take less energy to move, can be made faster, could last longer, and would deform less in operation making it more precise. It is certainly possible and feasible with the potential to improve shutter performance.

    Quote from his new blog:

AF Rangefinder pics - first look...

These are the first images shot from the new AF rangefinder I've been using over the past couple of weeks. The camera is still under wraps, but I can tell you that it is a game changer.

I've been involved in some testing with it, in particular the way the AF reacts to low light (one of the problems that dogs many DSLR's). It is pretty good. Not as good as my Canon 1DIV's but c'mon this thing is a fraction of the size and weight. There is full manual over-ride with each lens. You simply use the focus ring, and it goes to proper manual focus, not like the DSLR attempt at MF.

It is a proper RF, a little bigger than a Leica M9, but comfortable in the hand. The extra size is mainly to incorporate the VF which has some ground breaking technology involved in terms of the framelines.

Here are some shots taken over the past couple of weeks.

**Update - sorry I've had to pull the images as the traffic caused my server to crash. I'll look at some other way of hosting the images. Bear with me. **

I didn't get to see the photos--hope he can find another way to host them. One thing I noticed is the way he said you used MF on AF lenses--as we do now with the Panny m4/3rds (since I don't know about Oly's method--is it the same?). But he said larger than an M9 but with integrated VF (not EVF?).

Kinda odd too that nobody saw the photos :-( I now have the sickening feeling that this will be an April Fools joke.............a pic will be posted tomorrow of a Turkey........

Will continue more speculation after April 1st :-)

April fools...but if so, one of the all time greats! If it's a Canon RF, then that's exciting, but I am not waiting with baited breath....

I was not aware that Kyocera had designed a digital Contax G2...wish that had seen the light of day... alas, if Canon's in the game, maybe this is their response to m4/3....they did RF's in the past...BUT...it's gotta be an April fool...

Wasn't Sony bringing something to the table later this summer? A 4/3's competitor of sorts? If Jeff's post is legit, the 35/1.2 lens makes me think it's Voightlander / Cosina related. But, this whole thing smells of a April 1st joke.

Which would make sense- if it wasn't for the fact that it's March 30th. It could be this person was being a bit loosey goosey with their NDA and got a spanking. Crossing my fingers as much as I love my M9 it would be cool to see other digital rf options.

If this an April Fool's joke it had better end with at least a photoshopped pic of a hexar rf with a sensor in it or something.

I don't think somebody like Jeff Ascough would perform such an April Fool's stunt. It would ruin his credibility amongst the professional photographic community.

If a person under NDA tweets something, it's likely he's part of the buzz creation machine, and is doing exactly what the manufacturer wants him to.

Now, as a certain former U.S. President would say, it depends on what he means precisely by "rangerfinder."

No one seems to mention Nikon as the likely sponsor of this April Fool's joke. Anyway, Nikon has been rumored to be working on a RF for several years. It wouldn't surprise me if Nikon is the new RF player, I'd love it to be so! best...Peter

    Re: New RF countdown......(Canon?)......

I doubt it's an April fools joke unless Jeff wants to make a specific point regarding what he'd like in a RF camera.

If anyone could pull this off it'd be Canon, for whom Jeff is a spokesman. An AF rangefinder with electronic frame lines and a high meg Canon CMOS FF sensor would be an interesting addition to the mix. That could also mean live view.

Heck, since the mount is public domain now ... it could be a M mount. Maybe focus confirmation with manual focus M lenses?

More likely it'd be all Canon top to bottom, so it'd make little difference to me personally. I've never cared for the look from Canon sensors, and I've never been a fan of their wide angle lenses in any flavor. All the electronic stuff is nice, but I couldn't care less about bells and whistles ... which is why I personally hated the Contax G2 system when I had it.

    Re: New RF countdown......(Canon?)......

    More info:

I'm still having issues with hosting some images. The camera company aren't happy about them being hosted on a third party site, so we are looking at the option of upgrading my server to keep up with the massive traffic that the pics demonstrated.

I've had a couple of emails about the camera, and I can tell you a couple of things which I think are important. The high iso is really good, especially if you use the different picture modes that are built into the camera. The HCB/Tri-X mode is really good, and with the camera connected up to the computer you can tweak the tonal curve and noise reduction in that mode to get a really authentic black and white image straight out of camera. These can be saved as presets within the camera.

The framelines and AF are the biggest thing for me. The camera uses a system which the manufacturers call Luminance Optimized Optical Framelines. Basically the framelines alter size depending on focus distance, and they also get brighter or darker depending on the outside light. This makes seeing them a lot easier especially in the dark which was always an issue with standard Rangefinders.

Hopefully I'll be able to get some more pics up within the next 24-48 hours.
Maybe not a joke after all??

OK. Now that I had a few sips of coffee....... a few things popped up:

HCB/Tri-X mode??!!! Luminance Optimized Optical Framelines (LOOF = FOOL)??!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!! This is most definitely a joke!!!

An 'HCB/Tri-X' mode is most certainly odd. A Leica ambassador and a Kodak film, definitely not what one would associate with a Canon.

I'll be very interested if SOMETHING actually gets announced, be kinda funny given all the strange hints. Be rather fun if NOTHING is announced - from my perspective considering all the people starting to smack-talk the overpriced Leica M9's thinking their cheaper/better alternative is coming.

    Re: New RF countdown......(Canon?)......

If true..it is a Nikon. They have patents describing such a camera and a lens that fits the claimed 35/1.2.

As Jorgen said in a thread (m4/3rds), this is not all that exciting as Nikon would make sure no other lenses can be used on a cam like this.

The camera is likely to have a lock and key type arrangement that would make sure only when the designed lens is mounted, the sensor is accessible for imaging (part of the Niko patent IIRC).

If it is Nikon, then I will file this under the Nikon MX rumor category:

    http://richardpetersphotography.word...ikond3xrumour/

I really doubt Canon/Nikon will enter the RF arena. Maybe Sony, but it won't be RF, it will be RF-esque w/ AF.

The things that keep me reading this thread are 1) FF; 2) size; 3) AF with what appears MF assist. I love my FF 5D but not the size+ lens, really like the m4/3rds size/weight/flexibility, can MF pretty reliably with MF assist, but AF is helpful to me as my eyes age. I don't know if I would like a RF or not--never having shot with one, but IF this is true, I'll be interested as I'll never afford a Leica--and maybe this one will be out of range of what I"m willing to pay too for another system--but its intriguing.

Well Vivek, they certainly do, but if you refer to Mr William of Occam, the conjunction of the following:

    1. He shoots (and speaks for) Canon
    2. the new camera seems to have a LOOF (fool) mode
    3. it has an HCB/TriX mode
    4. it's April Fools day tomorrow.

Then postulating a new Nikon rangefinder seems to be a long way from a straightforward theory!

Of course, it could be a double bluff I suppose

I'm sure everyone will have guessed by now that there is no AF Rangefinder. It is a rather poor attempt at an April Fool's joke but with a serious side to it.

    ......

It is feasible that the interest that has been generated will go someway towards getting what a lot of people want, and we might just see a new affordable digital rangefinder in the near future (albeit without the HCB/Tri-x mode).

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Happy April 1st!!

I was right, he wanted to make a point.

The good news - Leica M9 still reigns supreme in the full-frame rangefinder category.

Oh David - surely everyone has a free let-off if they make a joke. Otherwise the world will be a sad and miserable place, because there will always be someone who doesn't find it funny.

    Just this guy you know
