    Leica M9 Titanium

Just announced at Photokina. Very fancy, electronic framelines. 22,000 Euro for the kit. Hell, at that price, I'll take two. Leica is soo out of touch with its customers!

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

...and I suspect the titanium M9 has the same sh--ty low-res LCD screen as the regular M9

Leica could really improve their products in a meaningful way and they waste their time on jewelry. I love most of the things about my M9, but if they're going to charge $29,000 for this kit, you think they could at least put a decent LCD in it.

Oooooh... it has a new STRAP! Well, that explains the price.

I'm not going to pull the trigger on this one. I heard from a source inside Solms that Leica have an unobtainium model in development! Oh! Wait a minute - that's the one they've been selling for the past year!

Be honest... did any of us expect anything less?

And also be honest... isn't this just a little embarassing?

I don't know what audience they're playing to but I doubt if it's any of us commoners.

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

For years, I've been one of those advocating for an LCD-based frameline that would:
    1. Shift AND shrink/expand to match focusing distance.
    2. Show only the frame of the currently-mounted lens (preview of others in a menu).
    3. Not disappear in low light.

If they've done these things, then it's good. Hopefully, it will trickle down to the M10. Which I then might be able to afford on the used market sometime between, oh, 2017 and 2020.

As to the price, Brad said it best, and the rest of you ain't far behind him!

    Edit, a few minutes later:
Nope, it's just the old mechanical frame mask, with an LED lighting it. Oh, well.

Yes, but if Leica can sell it at that price, I'm sure they have done their research and know that there are collectors out there willing to pay for it. Not for us regular M users but these sales probably help to balance their books and keep them in business.

Cool for the collectors, but that's it...will be interesting though, if at least to see what will eventually trickle down to future consumer M's, not this silly, 22K monstrosity....hahahahahahah

Leica Leica Leica...silly silly silly. I am the biggest Leicaphile in the world, but cummon, this is just bad PR, even if they decide to make it in limited quantities...

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

After a brief moment of facepalm, and thinking this is the end of Leica, I started thinking this is actually a brilliant idea. Pretty much every company needs some extra financing/funding right about now. Perhaps Leica figured out a way to self fund. I have to imagine the manufacturing cost is only slightly higher than the standard M9 and incremental too. Even if it costs 50 percent more to manufacture, that is a lot of extra pure profit.

I know this is correct, because if it isn't then Leica is just another company existing to gouge high-end customers and could care less about the rest of us.

Hilarious, Bob!!!! hahaha..., I'd prefer the adamantium version over titanium, personally...I wonder if 22K buys you waterproofing...hahaha...as for profit margins, someone will clearly buy these 500 units, and they'll sit neatly in collectors shelves. However, I do think that it'd be nice to get some of that tech into people who are actually using the M9 as a photographic tool to see if electronic frame lines are helpfu/useful/etc...

That sounds very much like my old Contax G2 (well, ok, not LCD)

I'll give Leica some credit though for giving the body a revamp. The changes seem to be more than just the top plate from what I can see.

We also all know that they'll sell every single one of them

I think it just did a major savings in advertising for them.

Sure, savings from that goes towards R&D.

    A brilliant marketing move...

Look at all the spouses justifying a "common" M9 by saying, " I saved $22,000 by not buying the titanium version." Common M9's are going to be even harder to find since the savings will be so great.

It's absurd! No way am I getting this with only a 35mm - I want a three lens kit. C'mon Leica offer this with the 28 Cron, 35 Lux, and 50 Lux. Wait, maybe I should go all Lux's 24, 35, 50. Yes, that's the ticket . . . oh but the new 21 might be sweet in Titanium, yes, 21, 35, and 75 - reissue the 75 Lux in Titanium - BRILLIANT! . . . oh but I really like a 50mm on full frame . . . aaarrrggg Dammit Leica . . . wait, I need another espresso to think this through clearly.

Charlie, wouldn't it just be easier to get the collectors set that includes one of every lens (including all variation chrome/black paint, etc)? now just charge a million a pop with free insured delivery.

Seriously, Leica development team, . Having come on board recently with M9, I don't mind investing in lenses, so long as there is serious development in future M bodies. Really a combo of the M9 and Fuji X100 features is what I would like to see...., but seriously a titanium body? Obviously if there is a market, fine, which but production is limited and already having a hard time supplying the 35 and 50 Lux's, as only ones available are seconds at a premium.

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

My initial thoughts aside, it has been great to see, a company like Fuji has listened to photographers, and produced a camera, albeit, with a fixed lens that will raise the levels to what photographers expect and want.

Leica with its niche market, has every right to present a titanium body, and will no doubt sell well, BUT at the same time should have clearly shown, or at least a wiff, of what direction and future development, the company is heading towards.

Bikes yes, I own two Ti bikes right now. And I have no issue per se with a Ti camera. I'm sure there will be more than a few of that 500 limited edition run shrink wrapped, and sitting in private collections. But, truth be told, the announcement was really more about the spiffy design, an element I really don't care about. I'm mostly disappointed that so much energy goes into this non-event, as opposed to moving forward on issues with innovation or improvements to equipment that will be used by their "real customers", the every day photographer. The digital M, and especially the M9 has been making a comeback with a fair number of pros, and this certainly does nothing to further that.

What makes me laugh louder than the price is the already long waiting time to get one (some time in April/May 2011 I saw somewhere). Seriously, Leica, get some expertise in marketing because who ever is doing it now doesn't have a clue.

PS Yes, that new Fuji is looking very nice indeed, especially the f2 aperture of the fixed lens.

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

    HI Everyone
From White River Cottages in Crete (nice little place)
Just a few minutes of Wifi, but I've been looking around:
Couple of points (but not from any other information than what I've seen around in the last hour)
    1. These are NOT LCD framelines - it's just a way of illuminating the existing framelines in low light - good idea? I dunno, it's never caused me grief anyway.
    2. As far as I can see this is a limited edition of 500 (maybe I'm wrong).

Why does everybody get so grumpy about these limited editions Leica do?
They're for collectors - and they make Leica lots of money (otherwise why do them?) - it's not going to slow down R&D on the products we do want (quite the contrary, it'll provide funds for them).

Buy them? Hell no - I've been around Crete for the last couple of weeks with my M9 bodies, and they're currently looking definitely used - these titanium cameras are going to sit in glass cases in collector's houses - good for them I say, especially if the funds generated means that maybe we will have REAL LCD framelines in a 'sensibly' priced M10.

. . . . . . but I still don't understand why people get so het up about silly prices for items they don't want or need to buy - I really don't.

Right - I'm off to the beach

    Just this guy you know

Hey, it's not like they stopped the R&D or production line because of 500 special cameras for the collectors.

Now I do think that it's fugly myself. However, I'd buy an $8000 M9 as it is if it were made of titanium though (chrome - ah, if only ...).

Great marketing move. Makes the M9 look like a bargain and opens ample room for price increases
Leica's news allows me to keep my wallet closed and enjoy my ordinary M9 and X1

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

I think this is a strategic masterstroke from Leica. This is why:

They knew something like the new Fuji was coming (possibly from others too, later on). They had to show they too could do it without letting go of the rangefinder system.

But they donīt have the capacity to make a large number of them, and they canīt afford to alienate all who have just bought an expensive M9 by making it obsolete.

So, they make a ridiculously flashy and ugly camera with an impossible price tag. No sane user will really WANT such a camera, only that kind of opulent people who drink champagne with their hamburgers just because itīs expensive. And if they give their surplus money to Leica instead of Breitling or Cartier, itīs OK with me.

But they have now proven their technical capability(?); still, they wonīt make recent M9 buyers jealous, and they wonīt have tomake so many of the new ones that they must take capacity away from the regular M9 line.

    End of ...

    Re: Leica M9 Titanium

Im pretty disappointed that they dont offer a 3000$ Pro program with it so that I can get my new titanium M9 fixed fast and get an 8 hour a day support line to Dieter in Germany for whenever I dont understand the menu.
