    M8 - Lens lineup question

    Greetings!

    (1) What is your M8 lens lineup? (Apologies if you find this irritating, but I like to read about people's subjective thoughts.)

    (2) When you press the shutter, is there a bit of a stutter step? The film bodies don't seem to have this (except for the M7).

    Thanks!

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

The shutter step is to wake up the camera and to hold the exposure.
    My bloated lens lineup is:
    CV12
    CV15
    WATE
    21/2.8
    28/2
    35/2
    35/1.4
    50/2.5
    50/1.4 pre asph
    CV 75/2.5
    75/2
    90/2 pre asph
    90/2 apo-asph
All this proves is that I cannot make up my mind.

Maybe I can help you feel more decisive... care to part with the 50/1.4 pre asph?

    Zeiss 21 f/4.5
    Leica 35 f/2.5 Summarit
Leica 50 f/2 Summicron (old version without integral hood)

    That's it for now....unless a 28mm Summicron tempts me.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

    Bob, Peter, & Jaap,

You guys just floored me with the lenses you have. How do you decide what to put in the bag?

I have been doing alot of lens trimming recently, due to my fall off the medium format cliff. (We really need to rename it officially as a CLIFF, it is not a slippery slope anymore.)

My M lens kit is a 28/2 ASPH, 35/2 ASPH, 50/1.4 ASPH, 90/2.8 . If I just want to take the camera with me for a casual evening it is the 35 Cron ASPH by itself since I really like the 50mm focal length in full frame or film. If I am out to use the M8 for anything serious, I take the 28, 50, 90 as a set.

This same lens set works great on my M7 also. The only change is that for a single lens, I use the 50 Lux ASPH and the three lens kit becomes the 35, 50, 90 set. My M7 is a .72 finder that has had the frame lines changed by Leica NJ to only have the 35, 50, 90 lines.

    Best,

    Ray

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

    Ray,
on the M8 when I just am walking arounf it is the 28 cron.
    A light kit is the 21, 28, and 50
    When I travel it is usually two bodies, the 12, 21, 28, 50, and 75 or 90
When I "go landscape" the wate comes out (although this lens is getting pretty lonely)
When I shoot the MP, it is usually the 24, 35, (50 or 75) 90 combo
When I expect to be in european small towns or narrow streets, I tend to use the 24 more than the 28.
I suppose that I should sell it all except for the 21/28/50 and buy a 90 summarit
    but I probably won't

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

    Zeiss 18

    Leica 21 pre-asph

    24 asph

    28 cron

    35 lux asph

    50 lux pre

    90 APO

I find I am mostly using 18, 28, 35, 50 on the M8. The 28 is my walk around lens, though probably least used on my M7, which sees the 24 and 35 most.

The Leica 21 I never use due to lack of finder and filter. It needs to be sold but has a case of "Schneideritis" (bubbly paint on the interior) so I know I won't get much for it. The 50 lux I'm also considering selling though not sure what I could replace it with - everything is so damn expensive now! Maybe consolidate the 50 and 90 into a 75 cron might be a good way to cover the long end. I rarely carry the 90 as it's such a chunk.

Well, I’ve been scolded for lamenting too much so I’ll try and keep it simple: 50-lux, 24-Elmarit, 35-cron and 28-cron (sold). Now that I played with these, I only need/want the 50-lux & 28-cron for use on my M8.

I've tried and enjoyed quite a few in a short span of time. I'm now down to these:

    CV 15mm

    v4 35mm 'cron

    Noctilux

Hi Ray- I have 2 M8's, an M7 and an M5. The rigid 50 cron lives on the M7, and the 50/lux asph on the M5. I like the 50mm FL the best on RF bodies, and the chrome rigid goes on the chrome M7, the black 50 lux on the black M5.
The 2 M8s have either the zeiss 18 and 28 cron, or the 28 cron and the 35 lux on camera, with a 70 and 90 ready to go. I always go with 2 bodies, but sometimes 2 M8, sometimes M8 + film. Once I get the used 90 APO-asph, I'll probably decide between it and the 70 cron, but don't hold me to it. The noctilux comes out, both film and digital, when I want/need F1. The 75 lux is my preferred portrait lens on both film and digital. The CV 15 is for when I want the smallest, lightest rig, and when IR is not an issue, as it's my only unfiltered lens. The 24/2.8 is my preferred landscape lens. The 90 elmarit is when I want light, super fast focusing (odd term for MF but man that lens snaps into focus), walk around all day, tourist type lens. The 135, well, I don't really use much it but it rocks. The 460, well, it's cool, but unused. So, in the end, they mostly all get put to work, er, play, more than not! best...Peter

    What I use...
    CV 12
    21 Elmarit
    28 Cron
    35 Cron IV
    50 Lux Pre Asph
    75 Cron Apo Asph
    90 Summarit

If I were to pare back my basic kit would be 12, 21, 28 50

I would sell off 35 and either the 75 or 90 but want to see what Photokina brings. If we get a pleasant surprise then the question is at what crop factor. So before making expensive decisions I will now wait before making anymore lens changes.

Own but don't use right now and will sell once I get around to it
    CV21, CV28 (f3.5), CV35 (f2.5), CV75

    Sold, CV15, 50 cron, 90 macro.

Yikes!!!!!!!! It has only been 11 months!
Also, I have spoiled myself rotten with some of the best Leica lenses which has made the decisions on what to use on a D300 so much more difficult!

28 and 50 stay on my m8's, however I would not part with any of them.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I need to buy the whole lot, and then weed out one lens per year. Fortunately, I've done the buying, so now comes the hard part.

None of you guys seem to have the Zeiss 15 2.8 ZM. Any particular reason why... it's a stellar lens (that I want to sell or trade) Oh, yeah, please don't tell me it's too expensive... not you guys.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

I pared my M8 kit way down. I am amazed how nice it is to have it all fit in one bag and not have to make decisions about what lens to take on a given day.
    CV 12
    CZ 21 f/2.8
    Leica 35 cron IV
    Leica 50 lux pre-ASPH
    Leica 75 lux
    M8
    MP

I figured out that I went through 17 lenses in the last 2 years trying to get this right.

while not the only reason, expense is a factor. I bought almost all my lenses used at dramatically lower prices than currently available, and compared to a new Zeiss 15, they were actually all much less, even the noctilux!

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

The M8 s are my everyday cameras are used almost exclusively for street and travel photography. My full kit includes:
    WATE
    18Zeiss Latest addition
    21asph Most Used
    28/2A
    35/2V4
    35/1.4A
    50/2Cron
    50/2Zeiss Planar
    50/1.4A
    50Noctilux
    75/2Cron
    75/1.4
    90/2Cron

So thats 12 lenses in total for three M8s . When I travel I pick out 6-7 lenses to take based on the anticipated weather and environment. For Paris ...it was WATE,21A,28A,35L,50Zeiss,50Noctilux and 90A.(seven lenses). Today its is cloudy and overcast....plenty of light just bald skies. It also looks like rain. This is a black and white day for sure. So I may need some punch. Also I will be walking a lot. The WATE and the Noctilux are not required . Ok its just three lenses ..the 21A,35L and the 90A. The 21 and the 35 on the bodies and the 90 in the vest. Different light and I would pick a different kit. If I had a better sky..the WATE for sure. Evening, interiors, very early morning the Noctilux and the 28Cron make a nice pair. On the street ..no real time to change lenses...so once I move to a target rich location..I have to pick just two. If I was in Florida today...it would be a significantly different selection...as you don t need either speed or very high contrast ...most days the light is very strong.

    Hi All,

    I have a black M8 and 35/75 cron ASPH's and a CV15.

I use the 35 about 85% of the time, the 75 about 10% and the CV15 the remaining 5%. More and more I think I could live with a one lens solution but I love all three. If the M ever goes full frame I will need a reshuffle but I simply love the way this system is so compact.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

I've gone through so many lenses in the past year. At least 20 different flavors of Leica, Hexanan, Canon, Nikkor, Zeiss and CV.

I increasingly find myself seeking simplicity, based largely on the 35mm FL.
So I am transforming to this:

    28/3.5 CV
    35/2 Zeiss
    35/1.4 summilux pre-asph
50/1.4 nikkor (though this may be replaced by a rigid summicron)
    72/2.5 CV

I'm just not really using the M8 much for telephoto work any more. Bought a Pentax K10D and I've been buying some old Takumar screw-mount lenses for that aspect of my photography.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

Seeing as I am using my M lenses on both M8 and M6 (and still hoping for a FF M9), the kit is:

    24 ASPH
    35 cron ASPH
    50 Lux ASPH
    90 cron ASPH

For one lens traveling have now added a Mate 28-35-50, and because of all the excellent images posted here demonstrating the classic "look", have recently added the 50 lux Pre-ASPH.....I'm loving it !!

Thinking of adding the CV12, seems like a lot of people have it, there must be a reason ??

Evening, interiors, very early morning the Noctilux and the 28Cron make a nice pair. On the street ..no real time to change lenses...so once I move to a target rich location..I have to pick just two. If I was in Florida today...it would be a significantly different selection...as you don t need either speed or very high contrast ...most days the light is very strong.
    Roger,
When you say 12 lenses for 3 M8's it just sounds so practical I've tried using that line on my wife with my MF gear... after all, three camera systems and not much more than 12 lenses for them. Of course it weighs a bit more than the M kit.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

I've got my lenses pared down to a very usable hand-full...

    CV 12
    21 Elmarit Asph
    28 Summicron Asph
    50 Summilux Pre-Asph
73 Hecktor (not needed, but oh so loved for it's classic rendering!)
    90 Summarit

Re the shutter step, yes the M8 has it to wake up the camera and to "lock" the AE exposure. It is a bit notchy in stock trim, but the factory is softening it now if you ask for that or have the quieter shutter upgrade done.

    Cheers!

You're so right about that. I have two of them. One has an infrared filter semi-permanently crammed down its throat. Very nice lens and a "must have," I think, for the M8. I use it a great deal and need no external finder.

I have the CV12 too because it's ultra sharp, but a little harder to frame properly than the 15mm.

    and
    24mm ASPH 2.8
    28mm CV ASPH 1.9
    35mm ASPH 2.0
    50mm 1.0
    75mm 1.4
    90mm ASPH 2.0 APO
    135mm 4.0

I had a nice chrome 50mm 1.4 pre-asph, but it popped off my camera one day and fell down the up escalator at Park Street subway station in Boston. It just kept bouncing and bouncing. A MBTA cop started to cry.

Fortunately, I managed to unload it on an unsuspecting patsy...

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

I've been pretty happy with my current M8 kit:

    WATE with Zeiss 21 finder
    35 Cron ASPH
    50 Cron (latest version)
    90 Elmarit (latest version)

I know... only 4 lenses!! Especially when I have my own Leica shop. Oh the shame!

I try to restrain and limit myself so that I don't overpack and undershoot. Almost all of my shooting is with the 35 and 90, so these two will always stay. The WATE is just too much fun for landscape and travel and the 50 cron is nice for portraits. Everying fits into a Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Home and weighs less than 10 lbs fully packed.

If I was willing to use a bigger/heavier bag I'd add the 28 cron ASPH, 75 cron ASPH and 135 APO and propably leave the 50 behind.

DaveB is the wonderful guy that sold my chrome 50 back to me (after some pleading on my part). Gee, I hope he is kidding about the escalator!...unsuspecting patsy!

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

came in to the M8 from M6 and had

    28 elmarit
    35 cron asph
    50 pre lux

    got the M8 and added

    21 elmarit, then sold it.

25 zeiss was bodycap for a while
    15 cv
    12 cv both for interiors

traded 28 elmarit against 28 cron, best move ever.
recently added 50 noct. first sample (used) completely misfocused
returned and got another one and it is pretty darn close...except...well, you know.

probably done now. Thought about 75 cron but would need to sell the noct because it is too close and the 75 is easier to use. could not justify both and the 50 pre lux.

thinking of selling 15 and 12 and maybe zeiss 25 for wate.

I would like to be like you when I grow up. One lens per body. I guess the 35mm on a M8 is closest to a 50mm on film.

Thanks for being the voice of minimalism.

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

    Daniel,

Well the 28/50 seems to be a very nice combination! There seem to be two camps regarding a standard lens on an M8, the 35 fov and the 50 fov.

We are just very very lucky these days to have the choice of such remarkable lenses!

    Hank,

I like your style, I often think of getting the 35 summilux as the extra stop would be useful. I just get put off by the back focus issues I hear about.

    Have you had any issues?

I'm interested that most of you with a large collection of lenses omit a 24 when you have 21 and 28mm.

I have the Zeiss 21 f/4.5 and now the 28 Summicron and was looking at the 24 Elmarit but is there a consensus that this might not add very much?

Re: M8 - Lens lineup question

I just forgot to put the 24 in the list. I used it a lot until I got the 21asph. The advantage of the 21 is that you have a little more forgiveness on cropping street shots. The 24 which can use the internal frames is much more accurate for framing up close. If either Leica or zeiss create a faster 18..then the 24 might be preferred.

I had and sold the 28-cron before realizing just how great it really was! I now have the 24-Elmarit and the FOV difference is markedly dramatic!

Had it and sold it. It is a superb lens, no doubt about it, but I cannot wrap my mind about the focal length, not on film nor on the M8. My blind spot, I suppose. Actually I sold it to my brother, and he has it on his M8 all the time.

FWIW, I am getting ready to head off on a weeks vacation with the family. I have pared my kit down to a bare minimum for me: M8 with 28 Cron mounted, 90 summarit in the bag just in case, 2 spare charged batteries and 4 spare SD cards. In lieu of a third lens, I stuck my GRD2 in the bag.

We'll see how well I survive on such a restricted diet!

21 ASPH, 24 ASPH and 28 ASPH are all very different, not to mention that the 28 ASPH has the Cron and the Elmarit versions. I like the 24 ASPH best, with the 28 Elmarit used when I need something more compact. 28 Cron is used when I need one more stop, while the 21 is used when I need something wider. There is also the WATE but I have actually not used it as I find it too large (more so with the VF), so I cannot comment on the quality. Had the Biogon ZM 25 but did not like the feel of it.

I'm not really a WA shooter. I prefer the 50-90 range.

If money were no object, I could make a strong case for owning at least one of every focal length lens for the M, as well as good cases for multiple versions of many focals... HOWEVER, at least for me, money is an object, as is the practical room available in my bag.

That said, I have owned the 24 and it has a completely different rendering than the 21 Elmarit Asph and 28 Cron pair -- it is more like the 50 Summilux Asph. The bigger but is in actual use for my style -- and I emphasize MY style -- of shooting, I found the 24 usually either too short or too long for what I wanted to shoot...
