    Summarit 5cm f/1.5 + M8

Here are a few shots form the 50mm/1.5 Summarit on the M8, quickly processed.

In this image I see for the first time qualities from my M8 that I get from the DMR. Here is the full frame. This one at f/2.8 (if I remember correctly).

Image is so-so but a crop helps, perhaps along these lines.

This one exhibits the swirly bo-ke that sometimes works very well in some images. Wide open at 1.5

Two more. First one at 5.6, second one at 2.8 again (guessing).

I like the b/w ones a lot, but I'm not too keen on the swirly bokeh in the first few.

I sampled a Summarit, and the swirlies were a bit too much for me, especially wide open.

Finished up settling for the 50 Summilux pre-ASPH......nice bokeh, and a little easier on the eye. It is a bit more expensive however.

how did you solve a filter problem? your color pics look like they were shot with a UV/IR-cut filter. if this is possible, i will buy this lens tomorrow. i like swirlies

    I used 2 stepping rings, both easily obtained. First a step-up from 41 - 46, and then a step-down 46 - 43. I use a Leica 43 UV/IR filter with a 43mm lens hood from HeavyStars (Flea bay dealer). Roger

    Re: Summarit 5cm f/1.5 + M8

Irakly, I am not using an IR-cut filter. The color images in this thread are processed in C1-4 with the generic M8 profile. When I have shots with people and magenta clothes then I use Jamie's profile (or convert to B/W).

Someone on LUF went through the trouble to convert an original filter made for the Summarit to an IR-cut filter by removing the glass and having an IR-cut he had ground to fit and placed in the original holder. Here is a link to that post (it is on the German side):
    http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-...es-duftig.html

You can find filters originally made for the Summarit on eBay and in some of the shops. Many are snap on but you can also find screw-in ones as well.

My Summarit is an M mount version and it is in very good condition. You probably know this already but the coating is very soft and if there are any cleaning marks or a slight bit of haze then the image quality is rather degraded. You need to find a clean copy.

    Hi Irakly
Yes it's 41mm, if I had an E46 filter I would have used it on the stepping ring directly, but i already had an E43. Love your work BTW, follow you on one of the other forums. Roger

I have the lens but with a bit of cleaning marks, do you know if it is possible to have a new coating on it done?

I'll try to take some pictures with it to show.

    M 5cm1.5 Summarit, no origin engraving $995.00
This 5cm1.5 Summarit #1536994 does not have the customary engraving on the front trim ring to indicate the country of manufacture. This one is likely from the Canada factory. The front element does have two noticable dings, but this lens is still a very interesting piece!

Roger, this was done using the Orton Effect, if you do a search on Google and you will find some tutorials.

Lovely image you posted. You have used the lens very well to create a nice mood fitting for the occasion.

Sean also has another one listed in the SM section, it has been there for a while (since before I purchased mine from him). However, it is listed as having a slight haze. They come up on eBay as well.

gero - have you used it much? I should say that I was just repeating what I was told (or have read) regarding cleaning marks degrading image quality and do not have firsthand experience with this.

    Re: Summarit 5cm f/1.5 + M8

I had a summarit for the last 2 years. Mine had some bad cleaning marks and my photos were really affected, so it sat in a cupboard. I had been planning to have mine re-coated, but have not gotten around to it. In fact, I just sold it last week to someone who was looking for parts. Mine had an excellent body on it.

When I first got mine and was trying to figure out how to get it re-coated, a forum member from another forum (who also is a member here), gave me these two names: http://okvintagecamera.com/ (Russia) and
    http://www.kamera-service.info/ (Netherlands).
    Good luck.

Guy -- 995 sounds like a bit much for a Summarit...I think mine was under 400...granted, the front coatings are a mess, but these tend not to be expensive unless they are immaculate.

Anyway, I have not used mine much on the M8, but it is very low contrast, fuzzy, and generally flattering...it gets sharper by 5.6. Here is a film shot with it wide open:

it does not show the normal use but I tried it yesterday with the DMR (I don't see to much the effect of the marks but thanks for the information, I'll try to have them recoated just to preserve the life of it)

Suart, I see that you are selling all your Leica

I am just starting to get to know all the lenses and think that the combination of the R & M is a very rich combination and think that I have hit a place where I can rest for a while. I am waiting for full frame sensors for both though.

Your pictures from Iceland are grate and I enjoyed your web page.

Thanks for the compliments gero. Don't worry, I still have plenty of Leica stuff! I am mostly selling the Leica R stuff, along with some lenses which are unnecessary or underused (like my dad's 28/2.8 because I already have the 28/2). I have no intention of getting rid of all of it.

Keep them coming, Gero. I'm enjoying the different renderings of your 50's. Is the summitar bokeh always so "bold"?

Gero -- I honestly think you are on to something here. Bokeh alone is not that interesting, but by combining it with the butterfly, I think you are onto something. This is not something I have seen before, and if you were to print them large, I think you might find a buyer.

I think that boke is more natural than we think. We all see it animals, insects etc... and nature uses it to camuflage because we are programed to not see it.

that is why a very small sensor camera might be better for macro.
