I should have upped the ISO setting for indoors, but I was too blown away gaga over this gorgeous Mercedes-Benz W196 GP car this morning to think clearly about what I was doing with the camera ...

    North of Night

My flight this morning went up to 75 degrees North, where the sun doesn't set at night. Here's Greenland through the blue windows of a 787 at 39000'.

I thought you would like that. The map program was cycling through all three languages, English, Hebrew and Arabic. Seeing all the place names in Arabic was an interesting challenge. I only got about 10 minutes of Greenland this trip before the clouds closed in again. In the past I have seen it clear all the way across just two times.

A rare blue painted bear in downtown Anchorage. I was able to get a quick shot before a bus load of tourists arrived to snap selfies with this unusual creature.

Vibrant colors from the M9. The Zeiss 50/2 Planar is no slouch either.

Lots of flowers in downtown Anchorage each year. The long daylight hours and generally cool (50-70) temps help.

Images are taken in Lajatico (hometown of Andrea Bocelli) surroundings, Tuscany in Italy. If you wish more precise locations let me know and I will point you in the direction.

    Re: Final night, Maccabiah 2017

The Maccabiah, although organized like the Olympics, professionally run with competitors from 60+ countries, isn't quite Olympics-level competition. The pole vaulters that I shot two nights ago reached 4.6 meters, while the world record is now just above 6 m. But the junior competition is strong, and our 10th grade neighbor (who is taller than I am) got a silver in the girls' high jump...

    Re: Fun w/Digital M Images

Usually, when I came to Paris before (and I did a LOT of trips to Paris the last years) , I literally brought tons of equipment with me. This time, I only had my Leica M240 and a very few lenses with me. My bag was so small that I felt this will never be gonna work out.

Not only that -I also did not carry a laptop with me, but only my iPad to upload some of my images during my three days and in the end, I was little bit nervous not accidentally format my SD-card at some time

But everything went well, and I had some very nice images. Enjoy some more on my blog: www.steinert-hausmann.de

A short, unexpected visit to Thun in the Bernese Oberland last week. Was distinctly hot and hazy. A couple of pix of the Niesen, Thun's 'triangular' mountain. First from the 'Vesuvius'(!) of Thun, 35mm Summarit; second with 75mm Apo 'cron on M240. Both lenses have UV filters.

I recently paid a short visit to Keuka Lake, and spent time with a photo blogger who lives there. The story is on TOP, but the link he used was too wide for his blog software, so it doesn't work for some people. The correct link to some pictures is https://www.flickr.com/gp/[email protected]/4U9j23 . here's one of them:

Thanks for the likes of the Niesen pix.

You'll be familiar with Toblerone and its distinctive shape. The factory is in Bern; the centrally located original is now part of the University — Unitobler — but the factory itself moved a little further out to Bern-Brunnen.

Toblerone is said to have been inspired by the shape of the Matterhorn; but looking at the Niesen, which is quite close to Bern, I really wonder...

    Re: Fun w/Digital M Images

The 7artisans f1/1 lens is an interesting alternative to a Noctilux; it's about a twentieth of the cost. It seems well made; the aperture scale isn't equally spaced, getting compressed as you go to f/16; there is no marking for f/11, and there are no click stops. It's coded as a Noctilux, but this doesn't always work; there is just the slightest movement in the bayonet on my M240: perhaps it's best to fully seat it, then try to turn the other way. It's a 'double Gauss' design, and said to give impressive bokeh. Here are a few snaps with it, all on an M240, tripod mounted, cable released, pull 100 ISO. I made no changes between exposures. All were imported into LR6, then uploaded to Flickr. I made no processing alterations. The exposures are left to right, top to bottom, f/1.1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 16. (No f/11) The point of focus is (supposed to be) on the rosebud in the centre; I used both the rangefinder and the EVF (the lens came correctly adjusted when tested against the provided scale.)

The images are small to make comparison easier. If you'd like some larger, just say so.

    Gray Day to Fly
    Westchester County Airport 2017

This photo is a nine frame panorama composite, captured hand-held through the airport's Observation Lounge window. The full resolution image is available from Netflix with appropriate permissions, it's 68 MPixel and runs about 7 megabytes or so.

Godfrey, that's not a common tourist destination. I used to fly in a flying club at HPN (before it became KHPN), but those activities have moved across the field into your grey distances. What brought you there?

When I was a child, well, shortly after I learned to drive and had managed to acquire wheels, I remember often driving up to Westchester Airport when the Terminal was a one room hut, there was only the one runway, it had no jetways, and the hangar where they did maintenance and repairs was pretty much an open building next door that anyone could walk into and talk to the men doing the work.

I grew up about 30 minutes south of there, in New Rochelle, and my first memories of the site were of rolling fields and a polo tournament before they built I-684 and the airfield.

A lot of my family and friends still live in the area so I usually arrange travel to the East with HPN as the destination. It's much more convenient to where I need to go than La Guardia, Newark, or JFK. I was there for the last week to attend the funeral of one of my oldest friends' father, and secondarily to visit with a number of friends and family.

I love the place. I remember when the runway was first certified for jet aircraft: I spent an entire week of evenings going up there to watch them take off and land.

Wow, things have changed. There's a good summary of the field's history at

    http://airfactsjournal.com/2015/09/h...-past-present/

which includes an aerial picture of the field in 1947, five years after it was prepared for WW II use. It shows what looks like three runways (one of which is presently a long taxiway) and your maintenance hangar. I did my instrument training at Panorama, took checkrides at Westair, both of which have morphed and disappeared. When I was instructing, we would debrief over bad coffee in the hut you mention. But the fancy small terminal and its parking garage came in sometime in the late 1990s, just before we moved away.

The changes are characteristic. I stopped in at KHPN two summers ago. Westair had become "Millionaire." Fuel was so expensive that my old flying club had taken to stopping in Poughkeepsie for cheaper gas, and had lost my favorite plane due to a fuel exhaustion accident.

... Which clearly shows the difference between the romantic memories of a 16 year old boy agog with fantasies of airplanes and flight, and the historical record.

I love the place regardless. It was my airport, a 'secret' I shared with countless friends my age and younger, one at a time, in those long ago days. We'd sit on the fence, or a rock, in the 'sweet spot' and watch the planes for hours on end, late into the evening. My eyes well with joy just thinking of it. It inspired me to go work for NASA, ultimately, one of the signal most memorable parts of my now-ended, forty-year career in the world of technology.

    Ah, youth.

My M9, which sat on the shelf for the past few years, went off to get a new sensor over the summer and just returned. It's still a fine M, if I don't need high ISO, and once I get used to its slightly different viewfinder. Here are a few quick shots:

    both with M9 and APO-SC 50.
