Oh Joy, a new old Leica lens...

Helen Hill made me do it....

I just got a very nice 35/3.5 Summaron in LTM mount. Why LTM so with an adapter I can use it on all my M's and the IIIG....

Should have it in hand by Monday or Tueday. B&H still has one in M-mount.

It is good to be under the Spell of Light and Glass once more. I'm slowly finding my way back to the way of light and beauty.

    In beauty may I walk
All day long may I walk
Through the returning seasons may I walk
    Beautifully I will possess again
    Beautifully birds
    Beautifully joyful birds
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk
With grasshoppers about my feet may I walk
With dew about my feet may I walk
    With beauty may I walk
With beauty before me may I walk
With beauty behind me may I walk
With beauty above me may I walk
With beauty all around me may I walk
In old age, wandering on a trail of beauty,
    lively, may I walk
In old age, wandering on a trail of beauty,
    living again, may I walk
    It is finished in beauty
    It is finished in beauty

I need to rig up a hood and cut filter for it. I'm see IR blood vessels. Also some landscapes have a strong yellow in the green grass.

you should have gotten 2.8... not only it's a better lens, but you can put a E39 filter on it.

I wanted the older 3.5 and you can put an E39 on it with a SOOGZ. Some times "Better" lenses aren't always interesting lenses...

Walking in the footsteps of the Ancients can lead you from darkness to light. I am thrilled you are making the journey in this fashion.

    Very best of luck

    Woody

By the way John, why not join us at the workshop in Arches in January? Winter there is spectacularly beautiful and you are surrounded by Navajolands. You could spend a few days before or after the workshop in Monument Valley, Page (Antelope Canyons) etc where the winds speak. And you would be surrounded by what will become good friends who will walk with you.

Best of luck to you sir!

I agree Woody , John you may love this workshop . Lot to learn and many M8 shooters onboard as well. I will also have access to getting some Leica demo's as well of lenses and bodies that folks may want to try.
Photography is all about experimentation and without it you will never learn art.

I'm saving my pennies for Paris in February. Looking at Navajo land in May when their schools are out. I have friend who teaches there and lives in Shonto.

Wow this lens gives astonishing results given its age. Can't wait to see you when I'm back in NY. Seems like you have accumulated a whole bag of goodies.

hey, now! you guys get to see what i have to live with on a daily basis

i mean, really. that crap about selling an M8.2 and going on holiday.... if that Leica was not put into my hot little hands immediately, he would be guaranteed a holiday six feet under!

seriously, i do have to be careful what i say here now as he has adopted you all. thank you for not strangling him yet (tempting though it may be).

i do hope John will come play with me -- and an open invitation to one and all! as you can see, i have to keep my Leica/RF enthusiasm down around the house....

(speaking of which, Cindy, i sooooooo regret not umping on your 75mm Summilux. OMG!!! what an effing gorgeous lens!)

Absolutely - I'm sure we can squeeze you in the Espace. It'll be Emma and two of the boys - Silas 25 and Sim 23, so there'll be plenty of talk on the long drive!

The shots with vintage lenses are simply awesome!! They got me inspired, so I dug out my 62-year old Summitar 5cm f2, and did a couple test shots. I think it will reside on my M8 for a while!

Bébèrt -- if you're using a filter, take it off at night. i've found that helps greatly with flare, coating or no, and you're less likely to get "flying saucers" with the old lenses.

No filter on this one cam. It's hard to find a filter for the Xenon, I'll first buy myself a Xoons hood.

Re: Oh Joy, a new old Leica lens...

    Hello Lloyd,
Many thanks for your kind feedback. Several years ago, I visited Sukiya Camera (www.sukiya.co.jp) in Ginza, Tokyo and casually mentioned to a store keeper saying, "it would be nice to be able to use some of the fine Leica M lenses on Nikon SLR bodies". The store keeper to my pleasant surprise replied by saying, "we have such an adapter available". You can easily guess that I bought the adapter after trying it out on a Summicron 90mm M lens. I have attached a couple of images for your information. Once again, I appreciate your positive feedback. Best regards. Leica 77

Re: Oh Joy, a new old Leica lens...

    Hello Cam,
Many thanks for your positive feedback! Using the adapter, one can focus to infinity. The green focus aid LED lights up when the subject is in focus inside the D300 optical viewfinder. The exposure metering works in either the aperture-priority or the manual metering mode. The adapter is extremely well made and quite easy to use even with the Digital Nikon SLR (D300). Best regards. Bebert, Those are lovely photos with the Xenon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that my 50 summarit f/1.5 was based on the Xenon design.

Leica77, The beautiful summicron bokeh shines through. I am not sure what I am looking at when you show the adapter, but is your lens one of the older crons that screw apart? Do you take it apart and then screw onto the adapter?

Hello Cindy Flood, Many thanks for your kind feedback. Yes, you are absolutely right. It is the older kind of M 90mm Summicron, and the frontal portion including the aperture ring can be detached from the rest of the lens. Only the frontal portion is screwed onto the adapter. The adapter has a nice focusing ring built into it. I am pleased to receive your comments regarding the smooth bokeh produced by Summicron lenses. Best regards. Leica 77

Hello Cam, once again! Nice to hear from you. I have only tried my 90mm Summicron M lens so far. The cost of the adapter was about US$160.00. Speaking of digital SLRs, I am quite happy with my Nikon D300. All the best to you. Leica 77

Oh, Joy, Thanks to David at Leitax in Spain, a brand new Nikon Mount adapter for Leica R lenses arrived here yesterday. The installation was quick and easy since the step-by-step procedure is well illustrated on the Leitax website. The photo below shows how one of my favorite Leica R lenses - Elmarit R 19mm lens - was attached to the Nikon D300 DSLR. Thanks for looking. Leica 77

Nice. Richly saturated; nice straight lines. Let's see more!

    Hello Lloyd,
Many thanks for your kind feedback. Indeed, I was quite satisfied with the saturation and rich colors produced by the combination of the Leica Elmarit R 19mm lens and the Nikon D300. I will post some more images later. Best regards, Leica 77

For a lens that everyone degrades (the 1st ver 19/2.8) compared to the new model (which is amazing), that first version looks pretty good. As per Lloyd - let see some more.

I'm not using a filter. There are no threads for a filter to attach.
