He has been for years... and the photos confirm my suspicion that the MM is going to be a great camera.

Bob, I did not know. This is the second time I read an article on his blog.

He has a wonderful knack trying to appeal to anyone and everyone!

The first time I read was through a link posted here on the SLR magic lens.

He wasted no time in promoting that with the M9M as well.

Isn't it something that daylight photos can be made at T/0.95 aperture at a base ISO of 320?

He commented that it was raining...probably late afternoon and a bit darker...
but yes one wonders what the F stop was...

I have been struggling to learn video...lots of Grad Density filters....

and the SLR Magic lens looks very good...wonder if it will hold up over time.

Steve Huff's blog is always a pleasure to read, and his images are a pleasant addition to his well written articles. Though, I must say... he seems to like every camera he reviews! That said, his reviews are very complete, all-encompassing, and the best part is that he follows them up with updates as he uses the products more. He's like a more reliable, somewhat more likable, Ken Rockwell!

He has stated he won't post reviews for equipment he doesn't like.

As for being chuffed at being snubbed by Leica regarding the MM, I think that's pretty obvious. You should read Lloyd Chamber's comments on his inability to get an MM, let a lone a press release from Leica about it. It seems Leica was fairly selective in who they provided pre-release MMs.

    "Rumored"?

It's written in neon lights between every line and between every character. But he punishes them using a Hyperprime, doesn't he
Great writeup though, and exactly the kind of photos I like to see with this camera.

What rumor? Steve has been wonderfully expressive in his thoughts in a nice way. I really dig the writing style.

    Re: Steve Huff on Leica

I like Steves Blog/site along with Thorsten Overgaards , they tell the truth IMO about gear and they dont pull any punches . Plus they are genuinely enthused about photography in general .

Ken Rockwell on the other hand seems to be a knobhead , he talks about how he needs cash to support his family but he also has this website : Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and a section about the mercs he owns( owned?)

    Car Reviews

He does have some valid points and I do go there for a chuckle, but Steve and Thorsten seem like they would be genuinely cool to hang out with over a coffee/beer and chat about photography etc . With Ken I think youd be embarrassed to be around him ( I may be wrong however)

Plus I used to live in San Diego for 10 yrs ( 1980 to 1990) and that was before I was into photography ( couldnt afford it!) so Im jealous of Ken

    Re: Steve Huff on Leica

So strange the world we live in these days. Used to be people had to be a staffer a major magazine etc to get products to demo, but these days Joe Anyone, assuming they get enough page hits, suddenly is a viable marketing opportunity all the camera companies need to send products to.

Its instant celebrity status if you can get your hands on the next big camera release before anyone else and post a few images of it.

Seems we, as in the online collective of photographers who read very forums like this, just can't wait to get any and all information possible.

I'll admit, like many here, to even visiting some Chinese and Russian web forums because I heard they had a link with image samples of camera XYZ.

Can't understand a word of text, but ooooooo and ahhhhhh sample images at high ISO.

Its kind of like we are a bunch of teenage girls that have to pick up the latest gossip magazine to see who so and so was reported to be dating or pregnant LOL.

Such is the internet I guess

From reading Steve Huff's writeup it's pretty clear he doesn't seem to be connected to the inner Leica circles. I doubt his writeup will have improved his influence.

    Re: Steve Huff on Leica

From what I read on Overgaard's website, doesn't look like he had a copy to play with either. I don't feel Leica's looking for celebrity bloggers to promote the camera (the cameras sell themselves), but perhaps more people they can trust to give real feedback on the working of hardware/software.

My favorite two review sites are Steve's and that of Thorsten Overgaard. I find Puts to be too much into curves and other technical aspects, and while I tend to like Sean Reid's reviews, you need to pay for access, and I really don't like how his site requires using flash.

    Re: Steve Huff on Leica

Disclosure: I like Steve and enjoy his writing, his photography, and his site.

The Leica event reminds me a bit of an Apple event. Steve Huff went there with a CV lens on an Olympus camera. When he had a chance to use the M Monochrom, he put the Hyperprime on it, a lens which he favorably compared to a Leica IIRC.

On the one hand, I think these choices reflect his integrity. On the other hand, it's unrealistic to snub Leica and then protest (I'm reading between the lines here) their treatment.

Again, I'd make the comparison to Apple. Walt Mossberg and David Pogue get all the stuff early because they behave themselves. What are the odds you'll see Walt bringing an Android tablet to the next Apple event?

Hi Amin (author of my discontent!)
I quite agree about Steve: interesting, entertaining and well intentioned- - - But I'm quite sure that if you brought an Android to an Apple event you'd be dead meat.

I have a clear recollection of a four way conversation with a senior Leica guy, Steve, Me and Jaap about the SLRmagic lens (laughter and much criticism of the name). I don't think it'll be held against him - maybe I was a chicken in that my OMD was left firmly at home (it seemed to be beside the point)!

    all the best

    Hi Jono,

An opportunity missed, I think. The OM-D, with an R and M adapter. It would have been great to ask for an AA 50 to check how it does on the OM-D with its 5 axes of stabilzation as well.

I'll certainly try the combination if I get a chance Vivek . . . but I'll do it quietly in Suffolk - no need to do it at a Leica jamboree.

having said that - they're very aware that the huge explosion of mirror less cameras is doing them good.

One surprising thing I was told by someone who certainly should know, is that the sales of the X1 were modest until Fuji release the X100 . .. at which point they increased a great deal.

Expanding a market can be good for everyone!

While I understand and fully agree that it would be uncouth to carry an OMD and such to Leica event, "quietly" anywhere and posting images/tests/"reviews" online isn't really quiet is it? Just thinking out aloud that is all.

    Steve Huff on Leica

gosh, what you folks are saying here is really scary

does it mean I cannot wear my own cheap watch if I participate in an Omega event ?

does it mean I cannot arrive in my own cheap car if I participate in a Volkswagen event ?

or use my own cheap mobile phone or cheap tablet at an Apple event ?

or bring my own cheap camera at a Leica event ?

    etc. etc.

you make it sound like a religious meeting

Steen, sure you can, but you shouldn't complain if they don't invite you again... It's your prerogative to do what you want, but it was a media and social event, so I feel it came off as a bit insensitive.

I can't remember exactly, but I recall seeing an image of someone handing Bill Gate (or was it Steve Ballmer) an apple product to autograph on. Ah... here it is, internet never fails: Steve Ballmer's shocking autograph of MacBook Pro caught on video -- Engadget. I hope you appreciate the irony.

Get it from the source: Serious Compacts Podcast 6: Jono Slack and the Latest from Leica (Berlin Event)

you might try the mp3 link again from that page, just in case they had some security checking referers that block direct downloads.

ah, i didn't know steve was walking around the event showing off non-leica equipment. not a good idea if you expect to get in with leica. but i still like steve and his site. he sort of has "an everyman approach," which i find refreshing, as compared to some online reviewers who are a bit full of themselves.

It's fascinating to watch the evolution of many of these photography blogs. In many respects, they are an off-shoot of reality TV shows. Personal celebrity (and all of the good and bad that it brings) intersecting with the desire to build larger audience traffic.

Steve, Peter, Thorsten and Ken ... in the online photography world, we now know them by their first names. They have developed their own personal brands. Their captive audiences heed their voices, and in some instances, pay to attend their seminars so that they can feel even more like special insiders.

Steve has announced he is getting an M9M for a week, so you'll be able to see his take on it in a couple of weeks. And he has pre-ordered one.
