Fun with MM DNG files - 2 - The Girl with the Shawl

    HI There
This is the second part of the experiment - Thank you so much for chipping in on the cormorant fisherman (which is still available for download for a day or so).

There is also a potential problem with dropbox limits - I do pay for it, so there is a larger daily limit, but please don't download the file over and over again.

If this is a success, then I'll be able to make other files available. I'm doing it through my website so that my son can amuse himself with the metrics!

You can play with the file, and then you can post your conversion on this thread.

    Enjoy!

Click on the Downloads link on the top right

This is my take - I'm sure you can do better

If interest continues, I'll post a high ISO file tomorrow

    all the best
    Jonathan

    Jono,

This is fabulous, thank you for sharing these files.

Without them I would balk at the thought of acquiring the MM...however this has convinced me of its value to me.

I'm not one for pixel-peeping... but man, it's like nothing I've seen. I think it's more than 100% higher resolution! j/k

After already gone through the exercise once, I've concluded that beautiful images will remain beautiful regardless of the processing, any improvement, is simply for taste.

Thankyou for making these available, these images show that the right tool was in the right hands.

and I am happy that they convinced others of something that I learned first-hand 20 years ago.

Following Marc's example I adjusted the blacks and shadows in LR4, then used SFXP2 to add structure, some Panatomic X, a little grain and burned the edges:

I think Jono's crop was better, though.

Hi Chris - I think it needs a crop - definitely - I did the 'tension' crop, but of course you could also do the 'relaxed' crop the other side!

Clearly though - looking at both photos - I'm at the bland end of processing and seem to want to do the least.

Thanks once again Jono....greatly appreciated. It's wonderful to see everyones interpretation of how they envision this image should be adjusted. Here's mine.

Again, incredible quality - if I had the cash, I'd be sorely tempted!

    Thanks Jono, Leica chose well

edit, the file is so sharp - I had to tone down the hair and cloth... phenomenal!

Sorry about the OT (if it would be construed as OT ).

Jono, Just by making a few DNG files of yours public, I believe that you have put a few "reviewers" out of business (unintentionally, I am sure)!

    Good job!

Awesome variations of an awesome photo to begin with! Well done Jono and everyone else. Most fun I've ever had with looking at the same photo over and over again. The details are amazing.

Re: Fun with MM DNG files - 2 - The Girl with the Shawl

    Thanks, Jono!

This is a great shot and fun to play with. Interesting how many variations on crops you can get out of it.

I think it's great that Leica have done this (although the price is not for the likes of me). I hope it encourages one or two others to try something similar.

    Now, one downside...

This is probably true of the standard Leica too, but I detest the look of luminance aliasing that comes from omitting the AA filter.

If you look at the girl's hair at full size, there are areas where it is just a jumbled, jangly mess. Not just jaggies and "twisted rope" artifacts on individual strands but that weird "sackcloth" look on the slightly highlighted area.

On the other hand, sside from these little bits that have crept through, I am generally impressed with how successful Leica are in suppressing aliasing. There is surprisingly little given the subject. I think the Sigma Sd1 would probably be worse. I wonder how it's done...

Jono, these are wonderful photos - very generous of you to share the full files this way. Remarkable file quality as well. Lastly, they are a fun exercise in processing and sharing, so here's my take on this one:

Thanks Jono for posting the DNG files. I'm still struggling with the decision to buy or not, as I'm concerned with how flexible the images will be in Lightroom. Having these files is a big help.

    Here's my take.

Jono, I would like to take a look but all that happens when I download is a quicktime icon and then a small image. Can't get to the DNG. What am I doing wrong?

    HI There
I suspect that you may need to change the extension (your computer may be adding a .zip extension or something similar).

make sure the file name ends in a .DNG extension - but you'll need to import the DNG into Lightroom (or photoshop) anyway.

Not sure if this will help (but it might!)

Re: Fun with MM DNG files - 2 - The Girl with the Shawl

Thanks again Jono! With all the square crops of Leica MM images I've been creating from Jono's work.....I'm beginning to think my Hasselblads must be jealously influencing my perspective on all non-square source files, particularly Leica images. :-)

I printed this one tonight on RRP UltraPro Satin (12x12in) and like the "Grandpa" image.....it looks terrific. If you are listening Nikon....please begin immediate development of a monochrome D800E!

Nice rendition Gary, and I'm feeling the same way about needing a monochrome version of the the O-MD

After working with MM raw files, anything with a CFA looks like mush

    Cheers
