Fun with M & R Lenses on anything other then a Leica

Since, "it's the glass", I'll start this thread (with slightly more scope) then the earlier one. Please share the occasional photos of your $11k Noctilux, $7k 50mm Summicron, R-mount, CV, SLRMagic, Zeiss, etc. lenses on your Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Ricoh, iPhone, etc. This would make it easier on the less peripatetic, among us.

    Cheers, Matt

Gorgeous photos Matt. It's amazing what these lenses can do, and it seems like the nex7 is playing very nicely with that lens.

I'm gonna be all up in this thread soon enough. I have an adapter on the way to put my M mount stuff on my recently acquired EPL1.

Wow, those are tough to follow Jono! I've just bumped the R60 up a few notches on my "wish list" ;-)

    Here are a few with a 1961 Elmar 135/4 on the Nex-7:

    Vivek/Jono/Taylor: Great posts!
Daves: Looking forward to your images.
Taylor: What the heck is in that third photo?

I completed my set of Summarits over the weekend. Nex 7 with the lens; an alley; me having a refreshing beverage.

Thanks Matt. I've been struggling within myself on whether or not to pull a bit of magenta out of the first one for a few weeks but I'm still in two minds about it.

I am still not sure if I should take the easy route and get the MM or convert a NEX to monochrome.

    A shot through the tiny W-Nikkor-C 2.5cm f/4.

Thanks Matt! That object is the Subaru Telescope, an 8.2 meter optical telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea Some day I'll go spend an entire day up there taking pictures, it's such an amazing place. But I'd have to train for it first, as I can only take the altitude for a couple of hours.

Ben - awesome shots! I think the first one is great as it is. What a lens - turns out it's great at portraits, as well as being an incredibly sharp landscape lens.

Thanks Matt - technically it wasn't somewhere I probably should have been :-) and it's not a great place for composition since the angles aren't very flexible.

Re: Fun with M & R Lenses on anything other then a Leica

Here are a few snaps from the 180 f2.8 APO taken with the OMD on a rainy walk this morning. (apologies if you've seen them on the 4/3 forum.

Being able to dial in the IBIS for the lens is a real winner - what is a real winner, is that if you half press the shutter the IBIS cuts in and stabilises the view in the viewfinder (really effectively). Then you can manual focus with some accuracy and fully press the shutter.
I know the Olympus doesn't have focus peaking, but with these very sharp lenses you get a kind of shimmer on the in focus areas (perhaps an increase in contrast?).

Whatever, focusing is really easy, and I was getting a good hit rate - even with moving subjects (the image of Emma with the dog was at quite a distance, and it didn't last more than a second!).

Jono - do you have the OMD set so it maintains magnified view on half press?

Also, what I noticed yesterday with the 60 macro was that stopped down the viewfinder would darken down and I would need to do a quick half press to get the meter active again to boost the live view light on the LCD/viewfinder - I guess I could try and shoot faster .

Re: Fun with M & R Lenses on anything other then a Leica

    HI Terry
No - can't live with the zooming an and out - just get the dioptre right, half press the shutter to stabilise the viewfinder with IBIS, then focus manually and shoot.

I don't use magnified view at all.

as for the darkening down I hadn't noticed the issue - but I'm usually half pressing the shutter anyway.

    all the best

I was out this morning with my E-PL1 and Voigtländer Nokton f1.1 50mm lens, with a Heliopan 77mm 8x -3 ND filter shooting wide open. I find the EVF of the E-PL1 to be the best for accuracy with this lens at this aperture. (I also shoot with NEX 5, GH1 & G1.)

I PP’d this with Viveza 2 for colour and Silver Efex Pro for B&W. I'm not sure which I prefer, the B&W helps minimize the background clutter, but then the colours also have nice earth tones.

More 35-70/4 R images. Shot with Canon 5D II ...click on them and take a look...you won't find any street pics of wooden, expressionless people...or out of focus or soft focus flowers...you might get a very pleasant surprise that there is some really good stuff amongst the 3 people that have displayed their images in thumbnail form on this page.

Using the 80/200/4 Vario-Elmar R on a Canon 5D II. This makes a great partner for the 35/70/4 R. Both lenses were made by Kyocera with Leitz supervision and design. The lens is well constructed...two touch controls.
The focusing ring is forward, making for some balance problems...focusing is very delicate...in other words, miss focus by a millimeter and you have really missed focus...there is some zoom creep involved here as well...when I raise or lower the lens and then look in the viewfinder, focus has been off...but...the lens is very sharp...produces brilliant, contrasty images just like a real Leica lens!
Here are some examples...YOU MUST CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS and see the enlarged images to really appreciate the fine rendering of detail by this lens.

The cat pic has been cropped 1/3 of the image on the right...to avoid distracting burnt out highlights. The image on the right hand end must be enlarged so that the superb rendering of fine detail can be seen (spider web and flower stamens.)

There is a second set of 80-200/4 images forthcoming.
