The ghostly mirror image is an eye catcher at first sight, but provided that it is more than a successful optical gag, it makes a promise of a more serious meaning that isn't easy to verify.
We see a timeless-appearing head of a woman; she is looking down, i.e. inwards, and her head is enveloped in a palla; she seems to be mourning, at least to be in distress. What is this apparition from the realm of shades referring to? Is it the inhospitability of our living conditions? Hardly likely, the stop and the station don't appear to be in a bad state. Is it the three young men on the bench? They don't seem to be aware of the apparition nor to have anything to do with it, and there is no obvious sign of misfortune among them that could be lamented. Is it the symbolic meaning of the stop and the station, in the sense that the manifold forwards and backwards of the passengers' ways indiciate an obliviousness of the one inevitable way of our life that leads to death? A little far-fetched, I suppose. Perhaps, finally, the apparition can be understood as a symbol of the ignored presence of misery somewhere else in the world; it's existing, we know, and we could set off from our stop to see it, but we are heading for different directions, and the misery somewhere else remains virtual.
