Anyone here using the Leica ME

Just wondering how many here opted for the ME instead of the M9 or M9-P. Personally, I am not sold on the color of the body.

Why buy an ME until all M9'S are out of stock?

The only draw IMO would be the ME's cheaper price. But my attention is more on the M or MM.

OK, wait just a second...there...now I've ripped the frame preview lever off of my M9, does that count?

Actually I would love an M-E, as the color matches my U-Boat...

M9, M9-P, ME- all the same cams with minor variations. Leica are a clever bunch rehashing the same old stuff with a different catalog number.

Personally, I would like to have the MM- another variant with a steeper price tag.

I don't like the body color either. Probably deliberate to allow existing stocks of M9/M9Ps to get sold. Bet the next ME will be all black.

I'll wait for the new M and maybe get one later ...but frankly, my M9P in beautiful classic chrome seems to do the job for when I shoot color, and the MM takes over when the light goes down since I convert most low light stuff to B&W anyway.

Wait a minute did you rip out the USB port on your M9 also? If not then you've got a hybrid M to go with your black and/or silver Prius.

Recently dealers have been verbally offering M9's at about $500-700 more than the ME. I guess they wanted to clear out their M9 stock since being notified that ME's were on the way. That put the M9 price very close to the ME price.

And you do not have to buy a U-Boat to match your ME.

I've seen many application of Anthracite Grey in German cars and they are usually very nice but for some reason, it just does not fit the M body well.

Well, so far, I don't know of anyone who bought one yet. Will it become the very rare digital M when all is said and done.

A store here has both the M9, M9-P (both in black and silver) in stock, as well as the M-E. The M-E costs about 20% less than the M9... Who on earth would buy an M9 or M9-P at THAT much more money when the M-E delivers exactly the same?

Anthracite colored digital camera, as noted, could become a collector item someday.

    "Cheaper" and a potential collectible.

Many dealers are selling the M9 and M9-P at substantial discounts, so with a little research you can choose the one you like best with very little difference in price. Of course NOS inventory will not last long.

I have always used the frame preview lever on my M cameras and think it is a shame that Leica is taking this useful feature away. USB port? Really, I've got one of those? Just goes to show how much I've used that (ie never).

Well, that was the idea behind the ME wasn't it?

When the new stock M9s are gone, the ME price will look even more attractive.

I should correct one of my statements ... I do not like the look of the ME color scheme in pictures. I've never seen one in person.

I didn't like the grey paint M9s either, and was elated when they produced the M9P in chrome ... which makes it different from most M9s.

I personally like the more durable, less fussy finishes of my chrome M9P and black chrome MM.

    To each their own.

Yup, but not the dealers here in Norway. There's no discount on the M9/M9-P here. So basically the cost difference between a new M-E and a new M9-P here is currently a brand new Summicron 50mm f/2 to put it in perspective.

Funny I had a look at ME in my local shop a couple of weeks ago and I quite like the colour. It looks different and I suppose they want it to differentiate it from M9.

Picture might not do justice to the real thing. I wished they bring back their old M3 chrome finish to this ME.

Now based on that info, it seems that a trip to Paris could be free if you were to buy an M9 or M9P in France (or Germany or where ever else deals are to be had in Europe).

All this fuss ... over the color?

I like the black M9, and didn't go for a grey one because I wanted the black and was going to pay a bundle for it.. But if grey was all there was, it wouldn't make any difference to me. Same for anthracite. The M-E is an excellent M, that's what's important.

I do hope they reinstate the frameline selector in some future model. I don't use it much but it's nice to have. I remember a similar flap over the removal of the self timer in the M4-2.

Is expressing a preference different to making a "fuss"?

I didn't make a dozen or more posts elaborating on how I thought the grey model didn't look good. That's a fuss.

I simply told the seller offering the camera that I decided I preferred a black model. That's expressing a preference.

    You guys mean this one?

Let me take a couple of pics and see if ' color ' matters.

I even put a red softie to ward off evil. Next would be a Green one, followed by a Blue one.

Sheesh!! Arguing about color. What color to wear for the prom night?

No you can get them with pink, blue or red but it costs $500 more.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. All these fashion talk is having a bad influence on me I guess.

Anyway, as far as I know, all leica lenses has yellow and white engravings.

Where is that $500 service? Sounds reasonable for the uniqueness one can get.

Bring some nail polish in your desired color palette and $500 and I'll fix it for you. No problem.

Yes. I'm not color centric or bling affected so the savings on the M-E was too much to resist. I haven't used an M for the past 3 years since selling my M8 so I have to get used to RF shooting again. Here is my new "gray ghost".

I am always surprised to read about photographers who don't care about what things look like, despite alleging to be visual artists. Frankly, I care about the way everything looks.

I think the finish of the M-E looks pretty nice in Scho's picture, althought I'm not sure about how I feel about the silver dials on top.

Beautiful camera. Doesn't look bluish like in Leica official shots. Is it how it looks like in reality? It seems to be just a tad darker than my steel grey M9.

Yes, pretty much a dark grey as shown above, but like most grey pigments things there can be some illuminant metamerism that alters the apparent color. I seem to be in a small minority that actually like the appearance of this camera.

Best photo I've seen of the M-E yet. It looks very nice.

I still prefer black, but I can't understand dissing the M-E on its finish color.

Hey Carl.....the "gray ghost"......I like that!

Makes me think I should start looking for a Anthracite Grey (Gray?) R9.

    I already have a black R8 and R6.2.

Would I buy an M series, of any color? Not likely.

Me neither, though I too have other preferences. The design bonus of the M-E is no wretched paint filled corporate-engraving graffiti on the front or top. That blast of red dot is an irritating distraction to the camera's looks, as is the traditional silver lens release button; but hey --- covering those with a coloured, or black dot of one's choice is a simple corrective measure.

Re: Anyone here using the Leica ME

It's interesting. When I saw one in person just recently, color wise it neither looked quite like those pictured by Leica nor like the one pictured above. Of course it may simply be due to lighting, but the gray top had sort of a semi-flat appearance with a slight color cast to the gray (something other than gray). Hard to describe, but instead of the gray top being a lighter shade of the semi flat black color of the pebbled leatherette, it appeared to have another color in the mix. Since this was seen at the Leica store, I wonder if it could have been one of the early paint jobs? The Gray M9 has a shinier paint (or overcoat) and is lighter. Generally anytime Leica introduces a new color for a M body and its different, the initial reaction is generally favorable being that its something different. Whether any of them esthetically stand the test of time, we'll have to wait and see.

I think it looks beatiful. I like the matte finish much better than the shiny paint finishes.
The only reason I would consider buying a M9-P (if it was the same price mind you) instead of an M-E would be to get rid of the read dot.

I tried to have a black replacement dot installed on my M8 when it was upgraded a few years ago and they told me (Leica, NJ) that they were not allowed to do that, although they did have the black dots in their inventory. I have some dark grey duct tape that might match the M-E paint quite well.

You can get the black dots from DAG. I got one for my black M9.

Does anyone have a pic of a Leica ME with a chrome lens?

How did you remove the red dot and install the black one? Glue?

That looks way better than the official press photos.

That said, I bought a chrome M9-P, myself.
