    Old lenses on new Leicas

I thought that it would be interesting to start a thread sharing experience shooting old lenses on Leica digital Ms or film By old lens I mean 40 years or more old with a preference for even older.

I bought the following oddity on e-bay which sparked my interest in this topic.

It turns out that it is a 1945 vintage Zeiss Jena 5cm f1.5 Sonnar set in a Leica screw mount by an unidentified third party.

I'm posting a few images which I'm cross posting from the Monochrom thead to get things started.

    Good initiative, Woody!

I do not have any digital Leica cameras at the moment though I cherish many of the old lenses on other fine cameras. Perhaps i will join in with pics if/when I find/buy a Leica MM.

Vivek - feel free to share film images! The idea is to get a better knowledge of these lenses. I've edited my first post accordingly.

Woody-Do I see like pitting on the surface of that old Sonnar 2.5/50 front element? Still works fine.

Any views on the 21mm Super-angulon f4.0 for digital B&W. I'm aware of the color shift issue which shouldn't affect my MM. Is there any evidence of "smearing" - another artifact associated with non-retrofocus very wides?

Nice! I'm a sucker for the "Sonnar look." Though I'm using the new ZM.

    Oh, I've got loads of photos taken with a '51 Summaron, a '59 Summilux 50 and a '74 Jupiter-8 on both M8 and M9-P! Here's a fave from each, on the M9-P:

Re: Old lenses on new Leicas

Now that I've had a chance to work with my new old 1945 CZ Jena 5cm f1.5 Sonnar I'm coming to the conclusion that it totally unreal - presence that just knocks me out. The day started gray so I did some test sort of shots. We got brilliant sunshine later in the day which presents dynamic range challenges given the recent snowfall here. Taken with my MM so I'm posting some images here and some on the MM thread.

To start a focus test. I was focused on the volume closer than MFK Fisher - both it and MFK Fisher appear to be in focus at f1.5, so focus may be a slight bit off.

Out the window at f1.5 or so. The lens has minor linear distortion which is "tame" in that it can be fixed with a +3 correction in Lr as demonstrated here.

Now it gets good. Three frames stitched. More over on the MM thread. Some minor work in LR taming the flare in the top center.

    LOL! Don't be envious - I ain't that young.

Though in my defense, the C Sonnar, while a new lens - is based on a Classic design. Heh.

will do, Vivek... the "try" comment was going to be blamed on the rain (but it's been sunny) -- the truth is i messed up my knee and am somewhat lame right now. each day a bit better, so i hope to be hobbling around with the camera soon. i'm think one day, one lens sort of thing... care to bring down some of your goodies and join me?

(and what was that about a 90mm Noctilux you mentioned in the other thread???)

will do. i anticipate it vignetting as it does on my M2... lovely razor sharp little lens, though, that has been languishing. i think it will zing on the MM.

Re: Old lenses on new Leicas

Here is my grand plan, Cam.

    1. Convert my Fujinon 50/1.2 to m mount to use on the (future) MM.

    2. Put the Wild Heerbrugg Reconar 98mm f/1 in some focus mount to use on the (distant future) M.

The first one is a real prospect and could happen fairly quickly.

Sorry to hear about knee. Hope you will recover soon.

The comment about "what can go wrong" had some reason. Those who do not know about the old super angulon do not know how far that sticks in to the mount and how careful one has to be to use it.

I am still looking forward to your MM pictures.

Hi Godfrey, I would only have old pictures to offer (from film) and not new pictures with old lenses like you said you would post (which is in line with what Woody intended, perhaps). Hope that clarifies.

    yum to your lenses!

as to the deep mount -- yes, i know. i've used it, very carefully, on the R-D1 and the M8... finally picked up a nifty Leica 21mm VF for a song at a show here and was looking forward to playing with it on the M9 -- but now i have something better

as an FYI to anyone thinking about using it on a digital M, along with having to place it delicately, it also does not not meter. all settings must be manual.

Oh. Well, old pictures from film days wouldn't be "Old lenses on new Leicas" unless a new MP or M7 was included there. ;-)

I assumed that Woody was looking to see what old lenses on the M9, M8, MM and upcoming new M would create.

Re: Old lenses on new Leicas

1950's era Nikkor P.C. 10.5 cm f/2.5 LTM on the M9-P (a cool old, longer sonnar design with a look all of its own). I snagged the lens for use on the MM, but it does quite well on the M9 as well...

One the MM, to give a sense of the OOF properties wide open...as that Sonnar creaminess...
