    Re: leica 21 asph

I was watching that one all week to see how long it would last after buying one the week before from KEH. Congratulations and Enjoy it. Sadly mine came and went off to NJ before I had a chance to shoot anything more than my messy apartment.

I hope you can get it back before your trip...that would be a good lens for Moab.

MWalker: Here is a 21 mm shot from a place you will recognize. A very good lens, and I use without the external finder. I don't wear glasses and I use the full finder. It is very close, and with the instant re-play, it works. A good purchase, I would say. DR

Keeland barn shot!! Lost many a dollar there but enjoyed the mint juleps.
Living in Western Ky I spend a lot of time outside so I think this will be a good focal length.

I have her covered with Leica to get it done in time. If not she can use mine or a demo unit. There will be NO shortage of Leica glass in Moab that is for sure. Maybe to MANY lenses to be honest.

I was joking with you, volunteering your 21 instead of mine Of course we will have a bunch of M glass available at the workshop, and Terry is more than welcome to borrow mine if she needs it

    Regards,
Mine was used. I got nervous as the lens was slated to go up by $400 on this price increase (Jan '08) and was going to get a new one before the increase. Decided to check around for used before making the purchase and much to my surprise I found three. Two were at Photo Village in NY one coded and one uncoded and then one at KEH. KEH.com is a good dealer for used Leica equipment. Their grading of used lenses is accurate to a bit conservative and their prices are fair. After my purchase another used one popped up in the inventory at Camerawest but has since been purchased by another forum member (same price). Photo Village may still have their two but they were priced very significantly above what I paid ($500 more) and mine was listed as E+ condition.

Does anyone have a picture or two of the CV21 next to either of the two recent Leica 21 Elmarits? I am still wondering if I need that extra stop, at great extra cost. It isn't a focal length I use a lot, but I would like to have it.

While the cv is teeny tiny the elmarit really does not seem that big in person.

Well, I am not as concerned with the absolute size of one lens, but of about 4 lenses in total, and it does add up I prefer the size and weight budget to be spent where I use it the most, ie. 35 Lux Asph rather than Cron, etc.

All this talk of the 21.
    Just had to get one.
Looks like it does not need an accessory finder at all. The entire finder view seems about a match to the 21's fov more or less.

I have ordered a couple of heavy2stars' 55mm wide lens hoods. I hope that these will work since I am happy with the way that his regular 46mm hood works on the 28mm 2.8 ASPH.

Would you send a link to which one you ordered. It seemed like the wide got pretty wide and I wasn't sure if it was going to block more of the view finder.

    Thanks Guy,
I just ordered it. When I went looking before, I saw one that seemed wider and didn't think it was right....so I figured I would hold tight and visually see what you and Jack had once I was out in Moab. Now you just saved me room in my bag.....which is pretty full from my GAS.

Really? I own both and even if i like much the little Elmarit i find the Summicron better for its less contrasty rendering and its smoother bokeh. Probably one of the very best Leica lenses ever made IMHO.

    Regards,
I've owned em all too... That said, given limited funds I would not give up the 28 Cron to get a 21 Elmarit, instead I'd buy the 28 Cron first then get a CV 21 until I could afford the 21 Elmarit. You've chosen wisely

I could not agree more. The 28 cron is the only lens I would want if i had only one choice. I agree with LCT probably the best leica lens around.

Coming from a extreme lens junkie that says a lot for the 28 cron.

I have been struggling to make up my mind on how best to use the 21 on the M8. I think the best option is probably the Frankenfinder, but I don't have a WATE and I have never got on with the 21-24-28 finder. Yesterday, whilst playing around, I stuck the finder from my GRD II on the M8 and whilst small, it does seem to give reasonably useful framelines.

Then, 'fessing up to my own stupidity, I think the crop factor on the M8 has made me forget most of what I know. You can still get fairly awful keystoning even with an effective width of 28mm when you tilt the plane of the camera just a little. Doh!

I am trying the Zeiss 25/28 which has less barrel distortion than the Frankenfinder and is also a lot smaller.

Bob - let us know how you get on. I like the 21 but seem to see use it less because of the hassle getting everything in frame that I want in frame. Also, for some reason I find it less easy to guess which is what I tend to do with the 24 - but then that is more or less my standard lens together with the 35 lux.

I am going to experiment a little more with the GV-1 (GR II) finder today.

The entirety of the M8 viewer pretty much covers the 21mm field...good enough for me. Granted there isn't any warning when something is about to enter the shot.

I don't really need an external viewfinder. If you're shooting using the one-third rule, placing your main subject on one of the corners of the 28mm framelines would get you the right framing of your picture. I don't care about what's in or out of the frame at the diagonally opposite corner.

    But that's my style.

I agree; I rarely use an external viewfinder. I don't wear glasses, so it is fairly easy. The instant replay allows me to move forward or backwards a step, and that is usually all I need to make the 21 mmm work. DR
