    Zeiss Contax G M-mount Lenses

Japan Exposures (formerly Megaperls) is offering for sale several Zeiss lenses with M mounts: http://www.japanexposures.com/lens/#lens

Does anyone know anything about these lenses? The Online Photographer promises a test of two of the lenses on the G-1: http://theonlinephotographer.com/the...log_index.html

I used to have a 35/2.0 and found it to be a great lens. Somehow more painterly than the Leica equivalent, but very nice. Same with the 45/2.0, though I never owned one, just borrowed one for a bit while testing out the Contax G system.

OT: Looking at the photos on that site reminded me of what a nice looking camera the Hexar RF limited is.

The G lenses are outstanding. I have a 90mm being converted by Dirk right now.

Re: Zeiss Contax G M-mount Lenses

I still use a set of Contax G lenses with my G2. There are wonderful lenses! If my G2 gives up, I will convert them to M mount for my Leica M6.

But if you are shooting M8, I think Zeiss zm lenses maybe better choices since Zeiss did make changes of optical design of 21/2,8, 28/2,8, and 35/2,0 for more 'digital friendly uses.'

    Kind regards,

I have the full set of Contax G2 lenses too . Can you give Dirk2s coordinates here, or with private mail.

I received the black 90mm lens yesterday. It is so much lighter than say the Nikkor 8.5cm f/2 or the Zeiss ZM 85mm f/2. Will take some shots this weekend. The test results after the conversion are here:

I think they are being perhaps a bit too cautious with the Epson; if you sent your RD-1 to Japan, I bet he could make it work.

Re: Zeiss Contax G M-mount Lenses

I've got a converted G2 version of the CZ Hologon. It has a very distinctive look. If you search Hologon on this forum you'll find samples from me and others.

The G2 was one of my favorite cameras - I've been trying for a long time without success to find the equivalent in digital in terms of form factor, outstanding lenses and autofocus.

I agree that the modern cz lenses are probably as good or better than the legacy G2 lenses - but it's hard to tell without a side-by-side comparison.

There is no equivalent of the 45mm and the 90mm. I have the ZM 85mm f/2 and it is huge.

There is the new ZM 85/4 Tele Tessar, but it's a stop slower, and it's not a Sonnar. But I'm not sure if it is shipping yet. A converted 90/2.8 is cheaper than the Tele Tessar, also. I'd rather have a set of Contax G conversions than Cosina-built ZMs.

Re: Zeiss Contax G M-mount Lenses

To me this is great news. I have the 21, 28, 35, 45, and 90mm lenses and would love to have them all converted to M mount. In particular the 45mm lens is one of the best "normals" ever and the 21 is superb. I would have to think long and hard about spending the cash on the 35, 28 and 90 as I already have great lenses in those focal lengths. The G2 lenses were so good and got so little publicity that there have been super bargains ever since they came out. The fact that the G2 got only decent reviews as a rangefinder body didn't help.

But I will have mine converted, do some experiments and keep the ones that, for me, make sense. I will sell off the others.

    Stay tuned for potential bargains

    Woody

Woody, I wanted to trade my Leica 28mm Elmarit ASPH for the Hologon, then send it for conversion. But it is not coupled . Otherwise, I think the ZM15 would be better? I have the WATE, but it has not been used. I think it is too big, VF and all.

That black 90/2.8 Sonnar is a handsome lens. Much better looking that the half-black conversion of the regular G lens.

At 16 mm focus isn't much of an issue for the Hologon. I pretty much leave it at infinity. I don't think that I've every had an exposure spoiled by poor focus.

The Hologon has a very different character than zm15: the hologon design is not retrofocus, not even by a little bit. This means that the exit pupil is actually only 16mm from the sensor - this results in severe light fall off at the edges of the frame (mitigated in the case of the M8 by the cropped sensor) and significant color shifts - which are actually quite difficult to correct. But it is perfectly rectilinear and very sharp center to edge. Here is a file from the Moab trip that illustrates the extreme depth of field, color shifts and light fall off. I like this lens a great deal - I use it a lot - but it's not a substitute for a general purpose wide angle lens.

Shots wide open, first shot at its nearest focusing distance.

    First time posting.

Hacker's lens test results from MIYAZAKI-optical, who actually did the modification to
all those Contax G-lenses, says in the left lower corner is roughly>

Round figure is an image from interferometer
...colour distortion (ie. CA) is small ... good
    ...glass has no "striae"
    ...glass has good polishing/making

Right of the above figure is diagram of spherical aberration
...full correction & bump is very small
it can be said that this lens is an almost perfect non-aberration lens,
it has very good front and back bokeh, and you cannot find a better
    lens.
...multi magenta coating and good against flare and ghost
    ...neutral colour rendering
...good construction i.e. lens has no de-centering

    ----------------------------

I have also converted G-Biogon 21/2.8 in Tokyo, the result with M8 is
quite good. However its file does not work with "cornerfix" well, since
right fall off is too steep for this soft to handle? I now put 6-bit coding
to the lens' L-M mount, and use "cornerfix" to correct cyan corners.

I did modify G-Sonnar 90mm to M-42 mount myself, the result is very good too.
    one large example > http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/image/69121574/original

By the way, nice shots of kids.

    Hi Hacker,

PBASE does not work with [img][/img] faclity well, here is my modified G-Biogon>
    http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/contaxgs

Modified G-planar 2/45 is not mine, just used one week freely before sending it to my friend
in USA after carrying them into Canada. Infinity focusing with Planar 2/45 was not problem, but
Biogon 2.8/21 was tough to fix although it focuses correctly now. I think they made a booboo,
linkage cum was not correctly fixed and adjusted. But I fixed it myself, this was lots of fun.

    Koji,

CornerFix should work fine with a 21mm lens; it can handle the CV 12mm, so I'd be surprised if there was a problem.

My suggestions would be first, check that the reference image you're using (the one of a grey card, or white wall or whatever) is reasonably evenly lit. If that doesn't work, select "Multiple Equation" mode in CornerFix when you generate the profile for the 21mm.

If all else fails, send me the reference image, and I'll take a look at it. Contact info is in the PDF file that came with CornerFix, or you can PM me here, or on the LUF. I'm more often on the LUF though...

    Sandy,

Thank for your advice, I finally managed to get a reasonable result using
CornerFix with G-Biogon 21, but my M8 is broken now (actually I did) so
I cannot experiment now. I will find out some original DNG files taken by
    this lens then experiment more.

Hi Koji, I'm a newbie here too. As I found no focusing tab in the converted G21 lens. Did you find any difficulty turning the aperture and focus rings?
