    Must be a race... ;-)

I think I've worked with almost all of those combinations at one point or another. I think this is why my Leica X type 113 has become my most used camera—use the 35mm lens it has, regardless.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

    For 2 lenses, I'd probably got 28/50 or 35/75.

I'd try to balance size and volume against speed, given that travel these days requires us to factor this in, even with Leica gear. All should fit in a smallish bag.

If I were to go 35/75, I'd go with a 35 lux asph and a 75 cron, though I no longer have 75's

If I were to go 28/50, I'd go with the 28 'cron and 50 lux asph

These combos give you speed and isolation, in a compact package.

In general, I travel with 35/50/90, and it all fits in a Billingham Pola, along with my wallet, cellphone, passport, keys, and an M9P with Luigicase....

Would that (SS) not be heavier though? I can see the merits of a Titanium lens.

Add either a 21 or 24 to the fold and replace your Billingham with an Ona and that was my travel kit as well.

Quite agree. Add an additional wide angle (21mm in my case) to the 35/50/90 kit and one has a well balanced assortment of focal lengths for travel. Of course this is a far cry from a 2 lens kit. In that case I agree with Ashwin, a 35/75 generally covers a lot of ground.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

Quick update, since I did post above about 21/50.. I'm in Japan for Cherry Blossoms, and I've still not touched my 21 (half way done my trip). The 50APO has been on the M the whole time. In all fairness I did bring the S-system out with the 70 on one day and 120macro on another.

Much prefer the lightweight M-system though. Reflecting on the 50APO, I think it would be nice to have a faster lens in some cases, but the last time I came to Tokyo I brought my Noctilux, and hated toting it around. That and, the two extra stops didn't really help indoors. I suspect the T-value of the 0.95 isn't actually very good. I get the feeling my 50 Summilux-asph T-value is better then the 0.95 Noctilux.
With that said, I might have considered bringing my 35FLE, but really I probably wouldn't have mounted it. Maybe just the 50Lux next time, but I do love the results I get from the 50APO... So who knows.

I suppose if the 50APO didn't exist, I'd probably have packed two M bodies and the 35FLE / 75APO lens combo. Or maybe even the 50LUX on it's own..

    21/35 with M8 and M9. Lots of flexibility--21/50 or 28/35.

For travel, I always have a 35mm and a 50mm, either Summicron or Summilux depending on size and weight desired. If I can take a third, it's the 21mm SEM.

Eith 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit ASPH or 35mm f/2.5 Summarit (or f/2.4 if you don't the f/2.5) and a 50mm f/2 Summicron or APO Summicron if money is no object.

Choose 28 or 35 based on which is a better FL for your point of view, and 50 because it is simply magic.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

I'm planning a very similar trip to Korea in June and have the same decision to make. So far for me its 35/2.5 and 50/2.

I prefer small and light over fast, but even at f/2.5 the little 35mm Summarit has beautiful bokeh (just not much of it) and the old non-APO Summicron still does everything I could ask of it.

21 & 35 for me. Right now it's the Zeiss 21/2.8 and a Voigt 35/1.4 SC on a M2. In my "winning the lottery dream world" it would be a M-P and a 35 FLE.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

    28/2-50/1.4; 35/2-75/2; 35/2-50/1.4

I have been walking around with all sorts of combinations for some days now.
And with different camera combos too.

My family thinks I have gone mad...they don't think; they know.
As the travel date approaches, I have started walking faster, and without purpose.

Depends on the place; Depends what camera I have also.

With the ME, what would I do for Night streets ( yea, I know, I have read all them
bring it up in post , use a tripod etc ).

If one lens..just the 50/1.4 and **ck it all. Enjoy what comes.

Of course, I could go to sleep early

    Nice posts
I'd like to go on a vacation if I had my choice and if had the time it would be 2 M bodies one M240 and one MM with the 21 it's killer in the city or out of and for sure the 50 you can't beat the 50 for an all around do it all lens!
Sometimes I love my 35 lux but not shooting into the light its sucks the flare in and zaps the contrast right out of the image otherwise I would say the 35 but it's too limited to be locked out of a shot because of the direction of the light!

Another one for 28 and 50. Would keep the lux for 28 ... Indoor shots require more light and wider pov..

28/50 hands down. Been there, done that and know it works. (Oh, and it would be the 28 Cron and the 50 Lux.)

PS: I added a poll for you, but our font colors are still under correction and the poll fonts definitely need to be fixed since they're the same color as the background!

PPS: Bob fixed the colors, then realized I did not set the poll up for pairs -- so yeah, I'm an idiot...

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

28 on the Q, 35 on the M-P and 50 on the MM2. Sorry for 3, but I will now carry 3 bodies. This is in general, so for different venues I change up the interchangeable lenses. Guess my 28/2.8 will not get much use now. I often take 18 for landscapes and 21 for Euro villages or use the 21/1.4 for Jazz clubs/dark situations. Love the Elmarit-M 90/2.8 for longer needs. Occasionally, take either the 75/2.0 or the TEM 135/4.0.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

My sweet spot seems to be the 1.4/35 and 2/75. The only annoyance I can find here his the different file size - not so much a biggie that it tempts me to replace the Summicron with a Summarit. I used to be 35/90, but not quite anymore. But then, I think one should change her or his habits from time to time to explore new views. For one I never though I'd go along well with 28 ... until the Q came along.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

Revisiting this thread having now spent some time with both the new Elmar-M 24/3.8 and Summarit-M 75/2.4 ...

    35/1.4 - 75/2.4 a great combination
    50/1.5 - 35/1.4 my classic combination
    50/1.5 - 75/2.4 ooh baby!
    50/1.5 - 24/3.8 expect 80-90% of my shooting with the 50
    50/1.5 - 90/4 my other classic combination
35/1.4 - 90/4 my third other classic combination

Et cetera. If I were leaving on a trip tomorrow, I'd probably grab the bag as it's sitting right now with 35/75 in it, and toss the 24 in as well for good measure. The problem, if you want to call it that, is that they're all good combinations. :-)

I will soon buy a 28mm, either the Elmarit ASPH or Summicron ASPH (money permitting).

My ideal combination will be either 28/2.x and 50/2 or 35/2.5 and 50/1.5 (vintage Sonnar).

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

Since retiring (fully this time), I split my time between Michigan and Florida … so, I'm sort of "on vacation" all the time. My M kit is now strictly a M Monochrome v-1 and my creaky old M28/2 ASPH, 35/1.4 ASPH v-1, 75/2 and 90/2.8 last version. I also have a 21/1.4 ASPH but never use it on the M … just the Sony A camera. I sold my M50/0.95 to fund the S100/2.

A vast majority of my M images are of people, so a vast majority of shots are with the 35/1.4 and an occasional few with the 75 or 90. If I know I will be in confined quarters I may bring the 28/2 but prefer the 35 for less distortion of people. Not much interested in landscape work … natural or urban.

Frankly, when shooting with the M, I do any color snaps with my cell phone.

Any "serious" color work is done with the S system.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

IMO 35 and 50mm are the ones which work best with the M viewfinder. 28mm framlines are not good to see, even for someone who does not wear glasses. 75mm is ok but not so easy to focus.
So my favorite is 35 and 50mm. Sometimes I like the 21SEM for its uwa character or if I want to catch a whole scene from closer distance.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

I choose the 28/50 combo. ..... that what I felt like a few minuets ago.

I did just return from a five day trip where I used a 21/2.8 mm on a MM and a 50/1.4 on a M-P 240 and was quite happy with that. On another day I might have chosen the 24/3.8 and the 50/1.4.

All I know is options are good ......

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

I've been walking around and shooting a lot during my vacation. I surprised myself by shooting a lot with the 35mm 'cron f2 and the CV 15mm f4.5... The 50mm 'lux and the 135mm stayed in the bag a lot of the time.

I might be wrong in the choice, but I think the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 and the 50mm Lux might be an excellent combo. The CV 15 f4.5 is actually quite usable but for the magenta fringing. My only concern is that the 21mm might be a tad too wide...

So my favorite is 35 and 50mm. Sometimes I like the 21SEM for its uwa character or if I want to catch a whole scene from closer distance.

It is all so personal. For wides, like the 18,21,28 and Tri-Elmar I use the EVF-2 with no problem.

Re: Poll: choose 2 Leica M lenses for travel

I briefly got to play with my dream travel combo and was not disappointed at all:

    50 APO on the Monochrom
    and a Leica Q

    It was perfection!

I really liked having the Q as a sidekick rather than an additional M body (too heavy) or an additional lens -- I loathe changing lenses in the field (the moment is gone) and I liked having a camera that did colour and could handle the load when my MM hung. The speed of the Q AF was outstanding whilst focusing it manually (while fiddly to change) was the best I've seen implemented on a fixed lens camera.

The only thing I missed, due to my love of shooting in absolute darkness was my f/1 Noctilux. The 50 APO may have sufficed but my MM went screwy and didn't record a series of images I made so I can't comment

    Anybody need a new kidney?

But why would you prefer B&W for 50mm and color for 28mm, or why AF for 28mm and rangefinder for 50mm?

    :-) Because he does ... ;-)

I tend to prefer AF with shorter focal lengths and MF with longer ones too.

My non-negotiable camera is the the Monochrom (at least 99% of my images are black and white). And a 50mm is usually glued to it. My old f/1 Noctilux is my favourite 50mm but, for travel, it's heavy and only close focuses to 1m. My 50mm pre-asph Summilux is what I've been travelling with, but it's brass BP and weighs tonne. That wears on you... I've been looking for a 50mm light-weight travel lens that focuses close and I'm afraid I'm quite smitten. Me, who prefers Mandler lenses over the newer designs.

As for the other, I happen to have an affinity for 28mm as well -- but don't love it on a rangefinder because you can't get close enough (at least for me). The Q does. The fact that it allows me colour for the 1% I might want it is a bonus. 28mm, to me, is personal and I like the option to have colour, auto-focus, live-view and all those things I usually don't use for that. It's a lovely break from rangefinder shooting, but even lovelier that I can zone focus easily if that's my preference. The fact that it weighs a less than my M9 with a 28 Cron is another plus.

I travel a *lot* and weight is important to me. But so is the look of the lens, and I find both the 50 APO and the 28/1.7 to be beautiful neutrals. They don't have the character of my older lenses but they also don't have the digital harshness of some smaller, slower lenses.

It's all my personal opinion but, to me, photography at it's best is personal.

I bring my VC 15MM and Lux 35MM with me when I travel.

They probably are used somewhere in the ratio of 10/90%. I just prefer to have the UW option just in case!

Hmm. I had no idea; you don't leave a lot of clues. And I have two (male) friends named Cameron who go by the nickname "Cam" ... Well, that's my excuse anyway.

Totally with you on weight and character. I'm still thinking about the Q, but I enjoy traveling with the X113 for the same reasons you mention. Its light, has a nice neutral rendering without digital harshness and because it lets me get closer than my M Monochrom and 35/2.5 Summarit do.

I'm only about 70% black and white, and my M Monochrom almost always has a 50mm lens attached, either a v5 Summicron (I'm another Mandler fan) or a vintage Zeiss Sonnar, which has its own kind of magic.

Ah, I see, the Q was not for you (if I had the monies, I'd buy it from you!).

    ***********

Which leads me to ask -- how many people are content with one camera, two lenses?

And who would prefer to have two cameras with them (each with a different focal length)?
