If they brought out an M8 with a full frame sensor 5 months after the M8.2 and upgrades started . . . it would be complete suicide!

But, in reality, it's really really unlikely. They've talked about the R10, the S2 is coming.

I've no idea what they're going to announce (if anything) but I'd be very surprised if it had anything to do with the M series.

How about a V-lux2, based on the G1, with a 4:3 sensor, and a splendid announcement of a number of micro4:3 lenses.

Or, more depressingly and more likely, a v-lux2 based on the latest panasonic superzoom camera

    Re: leica rumours

there has been mention that it is M related, but i know to take gossip with a grain of salt.

some have speculated that it would be dCL. a totally lovely thought.... i'm guessing it's going to be something earth shattering like being able to order your M8.2 a la carte. whoopee! it's still not affordable (especially as i just bought a large chunk of glass).

You mean, you won't EVEN buy one if you can have it black with red leather?

When I bought my first M8, they had an all black M7 with red leather, not my scene at all, but it was a convincing statement!

Engadget seems to be talking a 'hammertone' M8.2 and a fancy C-lux zzzzzzzz.

you know? after walking around all day with a nice inconspicuous lens like the Noctilux for my stealthy street shooting -- what the ****? that just might tip me over the edge! they'd have to get the red right, though. don't want it to clash with my hair

Truth to tell . . that's why I no longer have a noctilux, because the moments I wanted to use it, people noticed it.

But I think that a red leather M8 would simply have you written off as a fool, and that's a good scenario to be snapping away.

Your R-D1 is just the most splendid camera design, don't you get lot's of people saying " is that" I know I did.

The S2 is going to be the most covetted and lusted after DSLR ever made. The pricing will make sure that those who buy it - are too scared to tell anyone -

It was buried in a post at LUF ..came from a slip up in a dealer s mailer. No real details just the headlines.

What size is a "Metz 58 sized flash"? I like the size of the SF-24D but don't like it's limitations. I also have a Nikon SB-800 which is really too big for the Leica. A SF-24D sized flash with better electronics (just better exposure control) and a tilt/swivel head would be great.

The information available in the LUF post was based on a promotional mailing from a USA dealer. Simple headline indicating new Leica offerings ..no details. Just a slip up in the date of the mailing. We should know 2/20 which is the targeted release date of the approved information. Speculation was that the flash would be larger and have a tilt/swivel capability and be large size like the Metz 58 ...but thats speculation.

It is the dedicated version of their larger size flash. Probably about the same size as your SB-800.

Yes, I had that confirmed by my dealer earlier this week (he asked me not to say anything, but the cat is well out the bag now anyway). There has been an 18mm viewfinder in Leica's price list since January, so that part at least was expected.

Just wanting to dispel the rumor before it gets out of control...
It is absolutely not true that part of the economic stimulus package (the not very economical and not very stimulating one) in front of the US Congress this week is funding for each of their members to buy a nice Leica M8 kit (the Pork barrel edition)
I wouldn't be surprised, but I can assure you that this rumor is completely false.

    Guy,
    Nope, not a thing,
Most of my emails these days are offers to sell stuff like worn blue jeans and second-hand food or seeking political contributions for some splinter survivalist group in Montana.
What is in the Sony package?

    Hi Mark
    Thanks for that.
But . . . it's nearly as expensive as the WATE, and at 310 grams, it isn't much smaller either (WATE is 335), added to which, the WATE is absolutely at it's best at 18mm.

    Bob:

The controlling democrats won't even let the public look at the "stimulus" package so don't be too sure about the falsity of your rumor. And if true, could very well be the only thing in the whole $800 billion dollars that would make sense.

I predict a special collectors' M8-OFF (pronounced "Madoff," as in Bernie Madoff) edition. You pay ten million dollars and don't actually get a camera in return, but everyone is impressed with how rich and well-connected you are.

(Apologies for the frivolity to anyone who actually lost money with Mr. Madoff. I know we've got a number of forum participants who are seriously rich and might actually have been victims of his scheme.)

My M7 disqualifies me as well. Do wish I had the MP but the trade deal I got for my older Hassy 203FE which I did not use any longer for the black paint M7 with the MP finder was too good to turn down. Hopefully someday I will find a used MP which is at an affordable price and get a decent price for my M7 so I can finally own the film M of choice.

    Re: leica rumours

    Hi Carlos,

Thank you for posting the image.

    Hi All,

For sometime I have been deliberating about a 24mm EFOV lens for my M8 and was, to be honest a little surprised when it was not one of the ones announced last autumn. I took the fact that a 21 and 24 were announced as an indicator that a full frame sensor was going to be a reality due to the fact that the focal lenghts, both with, and without crop have a broad appeal. I think Jono has a made a good point regarding size and price versus the WATE too. For me though, I would happily invest in a lens but not until I know what the roadmap truly is.

In the meantime I am still very, very happy!

    Re: leica rumours

but look at the price of the Zeiss 18mm vs. this lens? to me, i think, the look would have to be astounding to warrant the price difference. and then there is the WATE, as Jono mentions, which just makes this all the more confounding....

i think i'd like to go back to being ditzy and get my red M8.2

I do look forward to seeing how the Leica 18 stacks up against the 18mm Distagon ZM. Should be quite a performer I imagine, though the ZM is awfully nice for the $$$.

As for the stimulus, I might like the D3X refund along with the SP 2005 tax credit ;-)

Jono, maybe you haven't seen the latest WATE price, an eye watering €4495 from Leica Berlin or 3399 from Red Dot, so the new lens should come in at 1000 less, with luck.

I think it will steal sales from the WATE - when I put it on a G1 to see live View, I'm struck how little difference, really, there is between 16 and 21mm. I think a dedicated 18mm is a happy compromise and none of the fiddling around with menu, filters, adjustable finders you get with the WATE. Mount the lens and the finder and you're set.

With this new lens, I think we have all we need, aside perhaps from a 28mm Summilux if and when a FF camera comes, the 28/1.4 is a favourite lens on Nikon FX, even if it's a bit past it optically.

[It will, incidentally be interesting to see whether the Super Elmar is a completely new optical design or whether it borrows from the WATE and is just a mechanically simplified version of it.]

    Re: leica rumours

    Hi All,

Wow, the flash is up on the reddotcameras.co.uk site. Bearing in mind its proportions versus the S2 I dont think this is the flash wanting a small, tiltable unit for their M.

Is this one of the rumor subjects?

That flash is huge and so is the price. It will be interesting to see if the head zooms and adjusts to the focal lengh of an M lens which was one of the original benefits cited for coded lenses.

    Can't help feeling 60%+ more than a Nikon SB-900 which does a great job on an M8. I assume it's a re-badged Metz...

    HI Mark
Red Dot are advertising it at 1995, plus 550 for the finder so I guess you're right, it's around 1000 difference, whether it'll be worth twice the price of the excellent Zeiss is another matter.

Still, I've been having an epiphany with my WATE recently. The trick is simple, have a bag which fits an M8 with the WATE and viewfinder, I've been using it a lot, but I don't change focal length's a great deal, rather as if one were going out with a prime, I'll leave it as it is unless there is something that really demands a change. If I do want to change, it's 1,2,3 (lens / menu / viewfinder) certainly quicker than taking another lens out of the bag. Of course, it does help if you have another body in the bag.

As for the difference being small between 16 and 21 on a G1, of course it is! It's the difference between 32 and 42 (who cares), but having a 21, 24 and 28 in one lens is significant (at least, I think it is!).

Mind you, I'm not knocking the new lens, it'll be interesting to see how good it is.

    Just this guy you know

Oh yeah, it looks EXACTLY like my Mecablitz 58A-1 with a Leica dot on it. Probably has a Leica foot on it for the connections as this is not a modular model. Mine is the Nikon edition. Still, it's nice to see a decent flash for the M & S series (although it makes the M8 look a bit top-heavy).

Well Gordon Brown will have to give us guys at least an S2 plus three lenses to all of us without M/F and only 35mm systems, just to keep the Union Jack flying then!
