Leica S 100 2.0 vs. 120 2.5 plus general lens kit advice needed!

    Hi guys,

I had the opportunity to test the 120 2.5 and S 007 for a few days and took some beautiful portraits. I really love the sharpness of the 120 when shooting at 2.5.

Is there any opinion regarding the 120 vs. 100 in terms of sharpness lens quality -> edges, CA etc.?

In addition, I have the opportunity to potentially buy a 70 and 120 for a good price, but am seriously considering buying the 100 2.0 instead. I such a scenario I think I would only buy one more lens which is wider, i.e. a 45.

Any views on whether I should settle for 70 and 120 vs. one 100?

    Best,

    Paul

One more thing to consider: I could potentially assemble the 70 and 120 for a bit less than the 100. But the 100 is 2.0 ... choices, choices.

There aren't many reviews on this lens, so this is why I am very thankful for any feedback.

    Best,

    Paul

I have both the 100 and 120. The latter is ultra-sharp, but heavy, and also has macro. In certain situations this may cause AF to hunt. The 100 is more portrait-oriented, not soft, but not as harsh with skin as the 120. It is much lighter since it does not come in a CS version, it is really a walk-around. 2.0 is great but, the DOF is almost like a Noctilux at that aperture, and can be challenging even for portraiture. Choices, choices...

    Hi Paul,
I am amateur not pro, and mainly using S for casual/family/vacation shooting.
Personally I prefer 100mm focal length over 120mm, and I prefer the smaller size/weight of the 100 over the 120, f2.0 is nice too.
I thing there is not a big difference of drawing between the 100 and 120.
The 100 has a very nice roll-off between sharp area and background, also works well shooting into the light. I believe the 100 focuses a bit faster than the 120 due to lighter weight.
The main advantage of the 120 is it has a closer minimum distance.
When I started with the S I mainly used 35/70/120/180.
    Now I mainly use 45/100.
Sharpness/CA? I feel both are very sharp and didnt see any problems with CA with either the 100 and the 120.

It's a very personal decision, I bought the 100, loved it but sold it because I wasn't using it enough, I find the 180 a brilliant portrait lens but then I liked 135mm more than 85mm in 35mm terms so it just fits better for me. If I were in the same position as you I'd find the 70 and 120 would allow me to produce a wider range of work than the 100 alone, whatever you decide it's just a starting point anyway, you'll soon be hunting out more lenses!

    Enjoy whatever you pick.

Here's a recent thread about the same subject over at LUF.

I have both but have not used the 120 since I got the 100 (don't do too much macro and I did not have the CS version of the 120 to benefit from that). It is faster to focus and is very sharp at 2.0. The 45/100 is my favourite combination when I don't want to use the 30-90(5.6).

Try the 100 mm on your 007 before you buy it. I tried the lens in the shop last week and found that the camera hunted with it quite a bit; it was much slower to focus than my 70 CS. I had expected much quicker focusing, as I understood from other users that the 100 focused quickly on the 006. I talked about my initial impressions to a Leica rep over a coffee the same day and was told that a firmware update was in the works to improve the 100 focusing on the 007. Meanwhile, my 120 focuses respectably quickly on the 007. And yes, the 100 is a very attractive lens; quite compact and light, sharp even at f2 - a great general travel/portrait lens. As for dedicated portrait use though, especially in the studio where I am not limited by size/weight, I also prefer the 180 lens.

    IMO

Each of the 100S 120S and 180S lenses have their strengths and weaknesses.

If your doing available light/environmental portraits then the 100S shines, for studio or controlled lighting the 180S would be my choice. I think you need them all, just in case...

you really can't go wrong with either lens, have both, the 100 is tad smaller but not by that much. 120 is also available in cs where 100 not

    Very important point here!

In the year or so that I have been shooting the S 006 I am finding a lot of situations where I mount the CS120 lens simply because I need to control the shutter speed when using flash lighting gear (75% of the time).
