Sunday at the docks

"Sunday at the docks"
Right from the first moment the photo surprises with an alienaton effect: beauty where it is not expected. We see steel wire rope, reels, cable and a a pair of work gloves shining brightly – things which are normally associated with rough and coarse material and which we describe and specify in dry physical terms. The gloves, not used for the moment, show hard work and allude to another way of characterizing these things: a description of their qualities as they reveal themselves in actual use as tools. But this photo neither depicts things unemotionally and physically nor in busy operation but rather aesthetically. It is assumed that we know about their nature and function; therefore the aesthetic perspective, which is apparently confined to the surface of things, plays with our cognitive faculties but doesn't deceive us. It delights us by the composition of forms, colors and reflections of light that it exhibits, and, as an end in itself, it needs no other justification.
A further step can be detected in the photograph: the combination of this idea of an aesthetical view of things with the idea of Sunday. The gloves illustrate the 'time off work', and the unusual radiance shed by the reflections is like a faint echo of Sunday as a feast for life, when we are freed of the workaday grindstone and are more probably in the right mood to see things in a different light, to think about what we are and what we do and what life is all about. Thus the photo is reminiscent of an aesthetical education that completes our ability to cast up our eyes and see the world consciously with its sensual counterpart, the freedom to see things in an aesthetical perspective.
