It is a MF acc. to http://www.photographyblog.com/.
Interesting. Hope it's compatible with some existing lenses.

Well at least Pentax are taking a more novel approach to their 'countdown timer', the image of the 645D is slowly revealing more detail as the timer moves forward!

We have more than likely seen the camera already due to the prototype that was doing the rounds but anyhow....

Anyone know what date it will be revealed? Reichman on LuLa mentioned on a thread that there is another big 'PMA' announcement but the embargo is only going to be lifted on March 1st. Could that be this?

The link above mentions MAR 9th-10th for the announcement.

Of the little detail we see from the camera - it looks like there is no pop-up flash.............which could only mean one thing: for PROS only.

I wonder if it will take Pentax 67 lenses, like the old 645 film camera did.

Could be a digital life for my P67 lenses after all.

    Re: Pentax countdown..........

Pentax is pushing all the right buttons. Add a few leaf-shutter lenses to the mix and rock-solid image processing software and this could go places. After the naff announcement of the Hasselblad H4D-40, this impending Pentax warms the cockles of my heart and tugs at my wallet. I hope it comes about at the projected price of $6500.00. And it's in BLACK!

While I am acting silly today, how about Pentax upping the ante and producing another with a dedicated B&W sensor at about the same price-point?

P.S. The lack of a 'vertical' grip does not bother me. I am one of those fellas who prefers the right-hand over left-hand grip. If you see someone holding his DSLR upside down shooting horizontals with his right-hand on the 'vertical' grip, that person is probably me. Helps me to breathe too without smooshing my nose against the rear LCD.

Announcement this week everyone.......... March 11th.

We'll see what develops. Rumor mill is saying it will be 40 megapixels and under $6500. The first is plausible.......the other, not so much based on whats in the market.

Am I right in understanding this Pentax would be a one piece camera (i.e. non exchangeable back)?

Yes its integrated, kind of like the infamous mamiya zd slr.

So the disadvantage is that you cant use the back on anything else, kind of like a Hasselblad

Well, for me, since yesterday but i imagine for the larger world its been a bit longer than that.

We have two H3d11 39s in the studio for the last few days and the last thing i was told by the dealer was to make sure and not put the backs on the wrong cameras as they will be "out of calibration".

So correct me if i am wrong but you cant even put a hasselblad back on another hasselblad camera of the same model and generation without sending it to Hasselblad.

So i would have to deduct that putting it on anything else is not going to be a realistic option.
So the only advantage i can see of being able to take the back of a H3d or H4d i assume is to clean it.

And to put it in the context of this thread, if it's that hard to control the alignment of a back then i am now starting to view the integrated approach of the Pentax and S2 as an advantage.

The H3D/H3DII/H4D backs can be used on view cameras, with a little effort and a Rube Goldberg-esque external harddrive/battery device, or tethered, as far as I know.

If the Pentax camera comes in at 40Mp and at a pricepoint even close to
what is being speculated then this is a product that will kick the [email protected] out
    of existing competitive products.
Not necessarily that it will outperform but that it could quickly outsell.

The only way I can see that the price can be remotely close is if they are using the
camera as a lost leader to sell new lenses.
Pentax has a long history of excellent 645/6x7 optics and while much can be found
in the used market I doubt many will perform up to the standards that a
    40Mp sensor will demand.

I actually think the 6-7K price point could be realistic. It will not allow for a huge profit margin, but I can see it happen, especially for a manufacturer that has to get into a small & crowded market and wants to get a piece of it.

I think Pentax will have to do something drastic to lure any pros if they are to enter the Medium format market - and the only way they can do that is to bring the price closer to the high-end DSLR's. This move is reminding me of the time when Canon introduced the first sub $1000 Dslr - a total game changer at that time - and certainly a smart move as they pretty dominated that market even with Nikon introducing the D70.

40 mpx, 3 focus points, 2x SDHC card slots are all pretty much confirmed. And a sensor that is 1.7X larger than 35 mm. Now the big question is the price. I guess we'll find out tomorrow :-)

Why would they want to especially in the current economy??...If the price/product is in the range speculated, it's is an interesting corporate decision. When the Hoya-Pentax merger was in process, it was speculated that the camera division would be sold off. I don't know the breakdown of revenues but I suspect that cameras is a small percentage of Pentax revenues and very small in the Hoya spread sheet.

Why would they want to go after the pro market? There is no money in that. If they can get some prosumers, they could make way more money. There are lots of rich people with an interest in photography, but very few rich pros...

I am looking forward to seeing this announcement. I really liked using the S2 last week. Ergonomically it really worked for me. Want to see another "all in one" incarnation.

    Re: Pentax countdown..........

Very nice! Since it's compatible with legacy Pentax 645 lenses, I'm guessing it might be with Pentax 67 lenses also (with the Pentax 67->645 adapter). This is GREAT news for longtime Pentax medium format owners.

Is that a tripod mount hole on the left side of the body?

Not sure if the price is low enough to capture many prosumers however.

Terry, this Pentax announcement is going to make your scratch your head with regards to a decision on the S2. I forged ahead and bought the S2 knowing full well about the Pentax rumors and Hasselbald H4D-40 announcement. For me the biggest selling points for the S2 were the ergonomics and no need for specialized software to account for lens corrections. I placed a lot of value in those two things.

It looks like the Pentax will have lens corrections as well, but it is one thing to rationalize the $20K for a HB or $23K for PhaseOne P40+ versus the $27.5K for the Leica and quite a different thing to rationalize $10k for the Pentax versus $27.5k for the Leica.

The price (at least in USD equivalent terms) is incredible for what you get. Of course we have yet to see US availability and price.

50k shutter? hmm. Seems low for a pro cam. Must not be a pro cam...

Looks like a marketer-designed camera to me...take features a mid-range DSLR has and put them into a medium format cam (which it isn't quite as it's not full frame 645). SD cards, 11 point AF, etc.

Interesting but will pros buy this combination? Will high-end amateurs buy it?

"The PENTAX 645D has been developed to provide super-high-resolution images produced by large image sensors — something previously available only on professional models — to serious landscape and outdoor photographers."

Do serious landscape and outdoor photogs need 11 point AF?

What does 'approximately 40 effective megapixels' mean exactly?

    Re: Pentax countdown..........

Pretty cool to see this come to market finally. At that price it'll be very interesting to see what the other manufacturers do to retain market share if the image quality is up there. I'm especially curious to see what Leica do long term as their product is obviously the outlying product in terms of just price and performance. Reliability, build quality and service is another thing altogether.

I never saw something as ugly as this new Pentax - sorry.

Wow. 70 weather seals, magnesium over aluminum, and can shoot in very cold weather. Build wise, this sounds better than any medium format out there, outside of the S2. I think the MFD game has officially changed.
