    Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

Since I've had some requests for image samples taken with the Rollei system lenses I've put some up here:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/erichis...57604663796373

BJNY - I put up two imagon 120 samples for you. I haven't used this enough to know what its like through the different rings/settings. In the one shoot where I tried the different lenses there was not enough light to use it stopped down more.

    Thanks Eric,
I'd be curious to see the results
if you use the Imagon aperture discs in front of your 80mm 2.8

That's not going to be easy to do and not likely I'll try it. But I will test the imagon through its range of disks and settings when I have a chance (and more light). Need to do this in the studio.

Thanks from me too. Should be able to join you in posting some images next week. Love the portrait with the 110 as well as the one shot with the 80 and softar.

Look nice. I have the Hassy version of the 110 on my 1Ds2 and love it. The 80mm f/2.0 Xenotar PQ looks nice as well.

    David,
It would be great to have some shots with other lenses and backs up there. Maybe we should make a flickr group so all can be seen together?

I plan to put up more images taken with the lenses I have:

    40mm f/3.5
    55mm PCS
    60mm f/3.5 schneider curtagon
    80mm f/2.0
    80mm f/2.8
    90mm APO
    110mm f/2.0
    120mm Imagon
    150mm schneider tele-xenar
    180mm f/2.8

Would love to see some from the 60-140 zoom, 75-150 zoom, 120macro, 150 macro, 50mm f/2.8, 300 apo and others such as the 40/4 FLE distagon, 250 and 350...

I also would love to compare some of the new AFD lenses with their older counterparts to see how much difference there is.

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

I have the 40 f/3.5, 80 f/2.8, 300 f/4 apo, 110 f/2 and am awaiting delivery on the 50 f/2.8 and the 180 f/2.8. My back will be here this Friday and I told the dealer to make sure the batteries are charged. Nothing worse than waiting hours to try out new gear... not that instant gratification is a problem for me

No offense intended Jack. I posted the link here because I was asked by a forum member to post samples. I participate in many forums (as do you and many others that post here) and have made many Rollei pen pals since buying my 6008 in Aug that don't use forums much. I don't want to have to repeat a whole set of images and comments everywhere. I was trying to think of a format that would allow everyone access, to search by keywords, and to group other posters lens sample images into one lump and I think Flickr is better for that.

Getting back to the 120mm Imagon - I forgot to add that this lens takes a lot of light probably much higher than the perforated rings suggest in their aperture markings. I think the DOF shown in the images also jives with a higher f/stop than their labels.

Wow what do you see that I don't? To me the 2 80mm lenses look very similar even with softar filter. It's the 110/2 that stands apart.

stands apart in what respect? 80 is much more subtle.

IMHO - the 110 is just way more versatile. Focus close without extension rings, and can achieve a multitude of looks through its aperture range.

But I'll have to try some more 80/2 and 80/2.8 comparisons with more varied background when my camera gets back from service.

    Eric,
have you tried the 2/80 with the 1.4x Longar?
It should give you a 2.8/112.
The Longar was specially designed to go with the 2/80 and the 2.8/180
I have the 2/80 as well and the Apo 90.
However they both have their special uses.
    If I had,like you the 2/80 +the 2.8/80AF, I would sell the 2.8/80AF
The 2/80 is rare and not made anymore.
    My 2cw.

    Hi Willem,
Nice to see you here. I do have the 1.4 longar but haven't really shot that combination. I've used it quite a bit with my 180mm though. I'm definitely going to give this a try. The 180 makes a nice portrait lens btw....

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

    Hi Eric,
I intend to stick with the 40+55PCS+80/2+90Apo+180/2.8
With the Longar 1.4x I sort of have a 2.8/112.
Not as sexy as the 110/2 though.
    I did sell the 60(thanks)
The weight of those 5 Schneiders in my camera case is already back braking.
I'm glad the Hy6/75LV combo is light.
My eMotion-75LV left for a trip to Sinar to get the new and larger Oled screen put-in.
Actually Sinar will give me a totally new back.
Included is the new rotating adapter.
    Can't wait!
    Cheers,
    Willem.

    Willem,
Please let us hear your impressions of the new rotating adapter when you get your new back. Also if there is any improvement in IQ and higher ISO performance.
    Thanks.

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

    Hi Billy,
my main reason for the selling of the 60,is that for my kind of work, the 55PCS is more useful.
Also, they are very close in focal length.
And of course the amount of lenses in my case.
    I'm not a lens collector.

    David,
I'll let you know how the new back performs with the rotating adapter.
    Cheers,
    Willem.

Yes, I had one fail in a 40mm f3.5 lens, and the total bill incl shipping was about 900 EUR. You can't expect the same price for all problems though. Sometimes the shutter might be repairable, sometimes it might need total replacement. I tried many times to get a straight answer from Schneider about exactly what needed to be done and I never got one so I can't tell you what I got for my 900 EUR.

Anyone know how many actuations the Rollei (seiko?) shutters are good for? I've already put like 5,000 frames on my 80/2.8 alone.

Definitely not the 40mm f/3.5 dunno about the 50mm f/2.8
It does fit on the 55mm PCS though

As much as I appreciate samples here,
Need the raw! :-) Preferably with a comparator that many may have. e.g. a HB 80 or 50 etc. After two pages of reading and looking at the flikr set I still have no idea what the lenses can do.

Short of raw, as Jack says, show here, show some full and crops. Yes it is an imposition but it all works out.

Tak Poon has put up a gallery of MTF charts for various Rollei lenses on photo.net. It's also a good resource when considering different optics. A couple of the scanned pages near the end have the legend on how the information is reported.

Graham, didn't you also post some MTF charts that were missing from Tak's collection?

    Dear Eric
The reason I appreciate your samples, even sized down is that I dont do MTF charts! [See some of my comments on that and audio charts LOL]

What we see on the charts may have little to do with what the lens draws. This is still an art not a science, this lens designing.

I don't know what IS the best, I just know what I like and don't like.

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

I compared the 80mm Tele-Xenar AF to the new 80mm AFD on a Leaf Aptus 75 and couldn't tell the difference at any aperture. I am not saying there isn't a difference (although the optics looked completely the same in the lenses...), but it certainly did not show up in the setup I shot. The only thing I noticed is that the new lens lacks an aperture ring, which I find unforgivable.
Anyway, here are some samples from the Rollei lenses...all on film, forgive me, I am behind the times.
    180mm Tele-Xenar AF and 1.4 TC

    180mm TX, maybe with 1.4 TC...I forget

    180mm and 1.4 TC

    180mm no converter:

150mm Sonnar HFT (the old one)

    80mm f/2.8 AF:

By the way, that 80mm sample in no way indicates how sharp that lens is...it is very very sharp with nice bokeh.

Here is a sample of it with the 1.4 TC (hmm...I seem to be using it a lot, huh?)

I have more examples, but not much scanned right now...

Very nice examples of the lens' character and bokeh
    very encouraging

do they hold up as well in the digital examples?

Thanks Victor. I don't know how they hold up on digital...the only thing I shot with the lenses was a basic tabletop setup, and in that the 80mm held up very well. I am sure the bokeh would not change very much if at all.

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

Well I know this is an Hy6 thread/rollei, but it would be interesting to see some of the HC and HCD Hasselblad lenses for comparison.
My frequency is one 'revolution per day" and increasing (or is it decreasing?? ) between H3 and Hy6.

Now, having heard MS may be virtually useless for me, and seeing again lenses producing a real 'presence' it will come down I still believe to handling-I mostly 'handle' I was out there today with the R9/dmr and 105-280 with 1.4x and didnt worry. However, I longed for the 'feel' of the Contax. Yup, for me it is easier in the hand than a 35mmSLR The 645 form factor is really good and the weight gives far more stability hand held (and I have evidence in images, I just need to dig out.
    So
currently H3D on top due to PRESUMED handling, and 'fun' factor (hey, we all like a new toy) anbd MAY have glass in my acceptable zone.
Hy6 has the glass, no doubt, but is 6x6.

forget all the rest; MS, fancy DAC, Rotating backs, whatever. These are both leaf shutter, AF slow shutter devices (its why I will keep the Contax 645)

BTW, can the leaf shutter be activated on the Hy6? I havent hear5d anyone say whetehr HB V lenses work on the Hy6/sinar?

anyway, I will not change my 'dominance' again till I feel the devices; H3D stays on top for now, with Hy6 lurcking to grab top spot (unless a lens IQ negative shows up and from what I have seen I doubt it.

With two guys with foto and z in their names at opposite camps, it really makes it tough!

    Victor,

why are you seeing the 6x6 format as a negative point?

The camera (body), the lenses (the current ALL cover the 6x6 format), all is ready for future larger sensors.

Of necessitry 6x6 needs to be 1/3 larger; mirror, back WLF etc. the 15mm have to go somewhere.

Whether it makes any difference in the FEEL is the question.

    Victor,

put a H system beside a Hy6 and compare, size and weight, and you shall be surprised: actually there is a pic on LL in one of the treads, with Contax, H3D and Sinar Hy6 shot side by side at various angles (khun_k).

The Hy6 is a very pretty camera to look at. The ergonomics are different between the two bodies - H and Hy6/Afi/Rollie. You will find that the viewfinder brightness is much better than your Contax on both cameras - which may help you manually focus better.

I do think though that you are looking at these systems as if you are still shooting 'film'. You have weighted too little on post shot work flow - be careful.

I am continuing to test the Contax system with its lowly P21 back - as far as I am concerned I am sufficiently impressed with the drawing difference between a few of the lenses to consider keeping it as a fun second system. This makes no sense from a rational point of view of course. IMHO the Contax bodies' aren't as good as H1 in terms of functionality and ease of use - but I do LOVE the faster shutter speeds and the quieter sound - but you woudl expect that from focal plane shutter.. Surprised at the relative dimness of the viewfinder in comparison to H.

If you are buying a second system - buy something which is sufficiently different to give you reasons to use it! LOL
I think you have a beautiful system with your BIG BOY P45+ on Contax - and am very surprised you re looking for something different /more.
You should tell the thread EXACTLY WHY you think you may need something different. This non-rational non utility perspective is just as interesting to me as practical considerations.

Good Luck and looking forward to your impressions.

    Cheers
    Pete

I have a Maxwell improvement to my Contax viewfinder, about 2 stops, and it is really pretty good.
If the H's are better, I wonder if the screen magic stuff is un necessary.
and yes, the Contax is something I will keep, esp for fast shutter speeds and use of other lenses.

"Battle of the H's! " goes on

For what it's worth, I love Maxwell Precision Optics and have one of their screens in my 203FE, but I did not find it necessary in the Rollei 6008 -- the High-D screens are superb as is -- extremely bright and easy to focus. I believe the same screen is used in the Hy6. The H series are quite bright, but they are no match for the Hy6 and Rollei because they are using a prism versus the waist level finder...I have not used the H series with a WLF, so I am not sure how it would compare...it would probably be comparable. I didn't really like the Hassie prism though...it felt like looking down a tunnel...a bright tunnel, but a tunnel nonetheless.

    Re: Rollei 6000/Hy6/AFi lens samples

I've got a Maxwell Hi-Lux in my 6008 and agree with Stuart as far as brightness goes. It's only just a little bit brighter than the High-D Rollei screen not the 1-2 stops I got with my Leica R8 and Canon 5d screens he made. However my High-D screen was dished (ie. not flat) and that messed up focusing. My maxwell screen is flat.

The Hy6 I played with in the store seemed brighter than my 6008 with maxwell screen, so an improvement on an already great system.
