First sample 645D shots

Hello all,

At long last, I have shot some sample pix with this camera. I should stress that these are not test pictures as such - I still have not bought my new tripod, and the shots are not produced in standardised, controlled conditions. So this is merely an initial taster intended to give an impression.

I will post a sequence of pictures gradually...

The first shot (file number ending in 40) was shot with the camera resting on a desk using my Pentax 6x7 105mm f2.4 lens via an adaptor. ISO 200. Focus confirmation used.

A close up crop from the centre of the frame is included as well.

The second shot was shot handheld using the brandnew 55mm f2.8 lens released specifically for use with the 645D. Also ISO 200. Focus and recompose used (recompose being irrelevant with such a distant subject).

A close up crop from the centre of the frame is included as well.

More to follow...

I should also say that I processed these by converting the camera's PEF files to DNG then using ACR. Slightly better results are possible using Pentax's own software, but I wanted to replicate what others might see from DNGs.

They are pretty much out of the camera, with only capture sharpening applied and a small amount of the 'Clarity' slider to suit my taste.

Shot on auto exposure.

Some more.

Also hand held, on ISO 200, using auto exposure (I think) and auto focus with recomposing.

Interesting hint of moire in the texture of the eagle...

Of these next two shots, the one of the building was shot on ISO 400, also handheld, using auto exposure and auto focus with recompose. This used the new 55mm lens.

The final shot used the Pentax 6x7 135mm f4 macro lens using the Pentax adaptor. Camera put down on some masonry and subject propped against a wall (so not parallel to sensor on all axes). Manual focus lens - with Focus confirmation used. Auto exposure.

One more picture (with the full scene and a small portion pulled out)... Still handheld. This time shot with the Pentax 67 75mm f2.8 AL lens and adaptor. Auto exposure. Manual focus lens used with focus confirmation. ISO 200.

If anyone would like to explain to me how I could upload a file without it being crunched down like this, please do. The files are better than they look above.

When we open them up in their own window, they shouldn't be getting crunched. These files have an interesting rendering. Not sure how to describe it just yet. Thanks for posting these!

Ed, you're really getting around. Where next, Cape York? If you are in Sydney for long, I can provide a tripod.

Thank you once again for posting these
I agree if you are able to post a few random DNG's for us to push around, it would be highly appreciated.
But please keep them coming.

Hello all,

As requested, here are dropbox links to DNG files that correspond to the pictures I have posted above. These pictures are only evaluation shots (i.e. of no photographic merit especially!) so I don't feel I am taking a massive risk here. Nevertheless, I respectfully request that you download these files purely to allow you to evaluate the 645D and that no other use of these files is made without my express permission.

Please note that the PEF (Pentax's raw format) files seem, when used with Pentax's own software, to produce somewhat better results (at least compared to what I have been able to achieve so far). Maybe it's the 'secret sauce' issue we keep hearing about...

Oh, and just as a reminder, please note that ISO 200 is the camera's base ISO. You can only go below that with ISO expansion, which I have avoided as this generally leads (from experience with other cameras) to reduced dynamic range. This is why there are no files taken at any ISO lower than 200.

Finally, please don't forget that these are not taken with a tripod. They are either handheld (in the case of outdoor shots) or taken with the camera resting on a solid object like a desk or masonry wall. So these are purely to give you an impression of the camera. I don't pretend they represent a proper test.

Enjoy - and please let me know what you think.

Ed

P.S. I hope to actually take some decent pictures with the camera soon!

please let me know what you think.
try RAW Developer - looks really good!

Corner sharpness of the 55mm in the first shot (0048) is great (left hand side) as is the corner sharpness of the 105mm (0040).

Could not load the other files by now (maybe they are still uploading?).

Hi Thomas - thanks for that - they are all uploaded now.

Hi Jeff - a bit of travelling involved, but just Melbourne and Sydney! Your offer of the use of a tripod is much appreciated - I might just take you up on that. Where are you based?

Warmest regards to all,

Ed

Here's another one - my first picture taken with this camera in action. Nothing special (if only there had been visible steam from the loco.!). The final 'worked' version has detail brought out in the dark areas, but I want to show you something close to 'straight from the can'.

You can find the DNG here:

Best wishes,

Hi Jeff. Good to know! I'm in Kirribilli, so it's pretty close by. Maybe we could meet up over a drink some time soon to talk photography...

Best wishes,

Ed

Thanks for sharing these images Ed. Did you use the new 55mm lens for the photo of the steam locomotive? Look forward to seeing more and reading your impressions of using the camera. Are you happy with how the P67 lenses are working on the 645D thus far?
