Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

To all, this is an official information.

Last night burglars entered our Alpa offices in Zurich by force. Dozens of lenses and a not yet clear number of brand new cameras and many accessories have been stolen. We are of course assured against such losses but all this will cause delivery problems.

We will put all serial numbers of the stolen goods on our website a.s.a.p.

We would like to warn and suggest you to not purchase any Alpa products from non-official dealers. Please get in touch with any official Alpa dealer or with us directly in case of doubts.

People are shocking. What kind of crooks even know what Alpas are? Or what they're worth!? I cannot imagine photographers or people with a working knowledge of cameras being capable of doing this. But the facts don't lie.

I hope you catch the bastards.

Thierry, sorry to hear of this. I thought you Swiss had the best security of anywhere!

b.t.w.: its House (or Office or Warehouse) "Break-In" in English, not 'Housebreaking'. Sounds identical, I know.

Hope the thieves are caught too, though I expect they are already way over the border in the East by now. Your stuff is very visible, so I'm sure some will come to light sooner or later.

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

I like to answer that question but it would not be a very nice comment.

It's just totally bad for the industry in so many ways. Alpa makes great products and this is just a totally shame.

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

Sorry to hear this Thierry. This sort of thing is becoming all too common. I've got three friends who have suffered theft losses recently and aside from any financial loss there's an unpleasant sense of having had your space violated. Hopefully the photographic community will be made aware of this which will make disposing of such items difficult. Better yet would be if they caught the thieves.

I agree! Truly remarkable if any professional photographer would buy stolen equipment if they know it is stolen.

I believe in 'what goes around, comes around' so anybody dealing with any kind of bad stuff will sooner or later be kicked in their butts real hard

It will be a dishonest professional or an opportunistic amateur. Since this seems to be a large haul, it looks like it is for resale which is going to be a challenge--easier to sell a mass produced camera.

I hope it was not an inside job or a disgruntled employee--you expect criminals to be dishonest, but not the people you work for or with...

My sympathies, this is a huge violation.

No way, Shashin, the Alpa Team is a team of very few people (7), included the owners, Ursula, Thomas and André and included myself.
They are all well-know technicians in the business since years and appreciated for their professionalism and their human qualities.
The same way, there are no disgruntled employees, so far.

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

After a day of cleaning, tidying up and checking was has been stolen, we can provide a first list of the stolen products.

I would like to publish the list of the most identifiable items here.

They took many lenses, also some 3rd party lenses/cameras and a digital back.
Also, the complete film-back demo stock is gone.

So if you face strange questions about adapters or film backs, please be alerted.

Thanks to all for your support and kind words.

Camera bodies also. Do they carry serial numbers and where would they be placed on body.

I wonder if Google search will index that pdf too? Because it might be good if the serial numbers could be found on the internet if people are buying some equipment and want to search with the S/N.

    Guy,

So far no Alpa camera bodies are missing.

Serial numbers on Alpa cameras can be found engraved on the bottom part or on the back of the camera.

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

I'm sure you've already thought of this but I'd contact the Schneider and Rodenstock offices around the world to let them know. Since the lenses are branded prominently with their names they may get inquiries (whether from the original thief or unwitting buyers).

    Really sad.

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

    Serial Numbers can be found:

    - SWA/WA ---> on the bottom of the body
    - TC, STC ---> inserted in white
    - MAX, XY ---> engraved in the bottom of the camera body

    - Serial Numbers for lenses can usually be found engraved on the front tubus or occasionally (Apo-Digitar 24, 35, Switar 36, Apo-Digitar 43) on the mount of the back-lens element.

What a shame! My guess is that if these are sold they will be sold person to person rather on the Internet, but the sophistication of thieves now is amazing. I too hope all is recovered in new condition and that the thieves are punished. Charles

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

Crying shame. I was impressed in a sad kind of way to see that there were a couple of Zeiss Biogons on that list - I thought that they were long gone ... Well I guess they are now

You'd have to think that a seller would probably unmount the lenses from the Alpa mounts. Good idea letting all the SK/Rodenstock offices know too - that's one expensive haul alas.

I sincerely hope that the perps get caught and/or you get some of this back. Wishful thinking I'm sure.

Awful news!! Why does this sort of thing always happen to nice people?? With merchandise this unique and rare, hopefully it will not be hard to track them down.

it's really strange... it must be difficult to resell that kind of stuff...

i hate that kind of situation, once my photo bag was stolen with LF lenses... i'm almost shure that it finish in a bin... but here it sounds like a different story !

I thought Zurich was a safe place !

Re: Warning - Stolen Alpa Products in Zürich

    From The Online Photograper:

Thieves with very good taste in lenses: Thieves broke into the headquarters of the high-end cameramaker Alpa in Switzerland on Wednesday night and made off with dozens of Rodenstock, Schneider, and Alpa/Zeiss lenses. If you come across any offers for Alpa lenses for sale, be sure to check the serial number against Alpa's stolen merchandise list. We hope Alpa gets its lenses back, in which case a Swiss jail will soon be hosting some discerning optical connoisseurs. http://theonlinephotographer.typepad...log_index.html

    This helps, I think.

It might not be worth saying, but if you folks do find any of these optics, don't confront the seller, but report the sale to the police or Alpa.

Ursula, Thomas and André, the owners of Alpa have asked me to give you all their personal thanks for the kind words of support and help here.
They have got dozens of mails and telephone calls to show support.

Things have returned to almost "normality", despite what has been taken away. The goods are well insured, but it is nevertheless a choking experience when this happens in ones home or company.

Again, thanks to all on behalf of the whole Alpa team.

Glad to hear its all well insured. At least in Switzerland the companies pay out on insurance, unlike in USA...

I expect many of these will be unmounted and sold as Rod /SK lenses alone, to broaden their 'sale' potential, with the Alpa mounts binned. Big shame, but that's what will most likely happen.
