Remember to post some lighting workshop photos in the MF section

    Hi Guy, Jack, David, etc.

Please feel free to enlighten us with any photos or eureka moments you wish to post from your upcoming workshop. Even though I have other commitments, I'm excited to live vicariously through your endeavors.

I hope you all of a great weekend.

Re: Remember to post some lighting workshop photos in the MF section

Hi Kurt... wish you were here with us, you'd have a blast. Guy and Jack hosted their meet and greet this evening at the studio and it was great to see some friends from the Puerto Rico trip and meet some new folks as well. I'd guess you can expect to start seeing some pics tomorrow evening as nobody (except Jack and Guy doing some testing) has taken any shots yet.

How is this for a demo shot. 10 lights and could have used more.

Amazing what can be done with $30,000 worth of lighting, isn't it? And yes, I agree you could have even used more

What I want to know is why you guys don't roll that bad boy down to the beach, stick one of David's hot babes on top of it, use some netting to save your highlights and a couple reflectors for fill, and go to town. I always teach my own students first, before we even plug a pack in the wall, that the best lighting made is the big single bulb in the sky. You just need to learn how to modify it properly.

I'll send up some beach swimwear shots just as soon as I shoot them :-). That will help get me through the workday on Friday.

    Hi Chuck:

Good point on the teaching natural light first, however you need to keep in mind we do a lot of that on our regular workshops! With this one, they're getting a *studio* lighting seminar. AND we'll be putting at least one of the "babes" on the bike today, only we refer to them as "the talent" or "models"

Thanks Andrew wish you where here also. The models start coming today with studio shooting the next two days and than Friday we hired bikini models for some beach work. We also hired two lingerie models for thursday also plus several TFP models for commercial , fashion and editorial looks. These folks will be knee deep with shooting models, product and getting to know how REALLY to work with lighting.

Thanks Peter and exactly what we are trying to accomplish is folks walking away with knowledge on lighting. It sounds easy but results are what count

I'll agree with the others and say that this one program I wish I would have been able to fit into my schedule. Indeed, excellent learning opportunity.

Nice bike and photo, by the way.

Re: Remember to post some lighting workshop photos in the MF section

Here are a couple of fun ones that we took while working setting up one of the sets.
It was an excellent day in which there was a bunch of shooting going on with virtually every brand camera: PhaseOne, Sinar, Hasselblad, Cannon, and Lecia.
Carlos Prio also came buy with his video setup and assistant and was documenting our days antics. Wait until you see the video of the event , it will show you that it is hard work being at one of Guys and Jacks workshops, but fun at the same time.
I would like to give a huge thanks to Doug Peterson, he took the reigns as the digital tech for the day and boy was he hustling. He knows his stuff and then some!
Anyway here are a couple of fun shots:

Sorry I couldn't make it by today guys. I just got really swamped at work with all the Photokina stuff going on right now. Where are you going on location tomorrow? I'll see if I can stop by tomorrow.

BTW, looks like you're getting some really nice stuff. It's all about the light!

Yes, it really looks like a great workshop and loads of fun.

I am still trying to figure out what the bartender from the hotel was doing at the studio - Jack didn't show us this technique on the other workshops!

Some serious eye candy here! Great work everyone. I'm jealous as usual.

I know you're posting stuff straight out of the camera, but I am noticing what appears to be a wide range of white balance. Lots of what appear to be very "warm" shots. I'm always paranoid my monitor is calibrated incorrectly.

Also, and with all the beautiful women you're showing this is going to sound strange, but can you post some shots of the studio and lighting gear? Sort of a look behind the curtain.

    Thanks!

    Tim

    Hi Tim:

Don't sweat it, the WB is all over the place here. I can't speak for Guy, but I've not bothered to pull the WB off the set's McBeth when converting the ones I've put up so far --- mine are literally straight off the sensor with the default flash WB applied.

    Cheers,

Re: Remember to post some lighting workshop photos in the MF section

I am waiting to get home to really process all of mine on my desktop which is by far my better system. Some quickies from this morning. I actually believe it or not did not shoot that much. I must be crazy.

Also Carlos Piro a forum member here and a amazing video shooter donated his time to shoot a video of the workshop. He originally was going to stay for one morning and just shoot the lighting demo but was really taken by what we where doing wound up staying all three days. Jack and I would like to thank him so much for his generous time and effort on this project. The guy is a gem. Our members here are just the best folks I have run across. I just love this place

I did not WB these yet but every set and every shooter shot calibration cards before each shoot. So when we all get home on our real systems you will see some nice stuff. Every image I took in the studio was tethered. Jack or I started every session and every set just to fine tune everything before folks shot. Shooting tethered is the absolute best way to run a Professional shoot.

Someone on the far lower left of the image in front of the tattoo admirer has his priorities all wrong...

Make no mistake: this is a fun event, but everyone is working really hard to make the most of their time and everyone is exhausted. Anything shot tethered while I was teching was WBed :-). But that's probably only 20% of the total volume of shots taken. Anything shot to card right now will be off in WB because everyone is just sending up strait conversions in order to spend less time at the computer and more time with the attractive talent. Once everyone gets home and recuperates there will be a flood of adjusted/retouched images.

To participants: I hope you all are using Make Web Contact Sheet to create those JPGs. Just make the web contact sheet and then go to the subfolder called "Images" in the resulting folder. MUCH faster than processing the raws normally and very close quality.

Also to participants: Since we used only the top Profoto/Broncolor lights you should find that nearly every shot in studio is neutral at 5500-kel/0-tint. This is one of the advantages of high end lighting gear (color consistency). Some of the shots with white gelled background will be a bit different because of strongly colored light bouncing around the studio.

Re: Remember to post some lighting workshop photos in the MF section

One other quick note to participants about all the shots we took of the models strait into the sun. If the model was a bit underexposed by the strobes try using the shadow HDR function in Capture One to bring up the overall tones without compromising the delicate highlights of the sun behind (and without having to do masking in PS). Conversely you can use the exposure boost combined with the HDR-highlight controller, but this might adversely compress highlights in skin tone depending on the subject and your aesthetics.

Maybe in a few weeks we'll take some of the images into a thread for a collective idea-swap on Capture One processing.

Another same set on the money. If it looks bad than your monitor is off. 2 strip soft boxes from behind and either side , 4x6 soft box coming from the top and a huge beauty dish from front left with fill card. Lot of care on the balance of the rim not to over blow the scene but just enough highlight. Other than WB straight from the P25 plus back. Which one day I was shooting all three 25,30 and 45 plus backs on the same camera tethered and not even a glitch when switching around.
