DP shows how to do fine art

To distract everyone from the D800 discussions, Digital Photography magazine in the UK has been influencing my approach to fine art photography quite strongly. This should probably go in a technique section or something, but it seemed particularly pertinent to the MFDB users in the group. I felt somehow changed afterwards.

Really proud of myself, managed to watch through almost half of it before my brain turned to cheese. The OP was sarcastic right? Please tell me it was.

I think we all are changed by watching that Paul.
Certainly more chuckles here than in the D800 vs MFD thread

Why was there never " are you selling your M9 now that the 7D has 18MP" thread?

Why else would you have fruits and paints in the studio?

Well it was more visually interesting by not having some crusty bearded old sage talk about light fall off and modifiers I suppose.

+1 on the fruit & paints idea ...

bob got it almost right.. this must be a sexual voyeur thing… it's all about looking at girls dealing with sophisticated technical stuff…

GUY, you may be sooo wrong… try to anounce a class where YOU hand over your tech cam, IQ back, tripod and cube (separate pieces) to a blonde high heeled girl whith the purpose to let her assamble all and finaly take a shot…

I'd book that class in a second

I'd want the video of it serialised! We could go onto using the cube, stitching, graduated grads, focusing an M9, it could be great!

They almost look like they know what they are talking about, but then illusion quickly disappears. Or is it the other way around? Anyways, it definitely leaves room for improvement in so many ways. But, at least, couple more people who are "working" in photography field!

Re: DP shows how to do fine art

You all DO realise that this video is exactly what most people think "real" photographers are like. Or David Hemmings astride a model in Blowup. Close call either way.

Anyway ... My favourite representation of photographers ever filmed is in Zoolander: "You're a monkey Derek! You're a monkey, dance monkey!". I tell my friends this happens ALL ... THE ... TIME.

(OMG did I just use the phrase <"real" photographers> in a sentence? I'm off to do some penance to appease the gods of hubris. Perhaps with some fruit and some paint.)

They must think their video was a success based on the number of views from this forum alone.

Cute little session for introducing kids to fun photography.

But you'd have to keep your eye on them all the time ... or next thing you know, they'd be dropping a cat in the tank.

Hi Gareth, all, yes I was so inspired by the combo of suggestive fruit and lemonade that I simply had to try! Actually the truth is I shot this some time ago, and no lemondade in sight. I might have had a glass of wine nearby... And as this is ahe MF forum, I am pleased to report I used the H4D-50 and 120 macro.

It's a good thing that this was posted in the MF forum, so that we normal punters don't get the impression that we would be able to do it too. I mean: coloured pencils in lemonade. I wouldn't even know what kind of lemonade to buy

There are a number of valuable videos in this series. In this one they dispel the notion that the 645D is not a studio camera:

I've never been one to go with the flow, so why start now...

Based on these comments, I could be sitting in a men's club with half naked sweaty dudes in a sauna.

I think there's some good pointers for newbies, and far more fun to watch!

That video is later on in the series!

As for good pointers for newbies. They keep using all the wrong terminology or mixing it up and that must be very difficult and confusing for beginners to understand.

"I've got the camera set to 125 to coincide with the light flashing"

    "I'm using a narrow depth of field....f29"

You must have watched a different video as this is the last thing I would recommend any beginner to watch.

I have to agree. In the macro video, a 5D with a Canon 50mm fixed focus macro lens is used.

No its the worst thing a newbie could watch as it is all bad info. I would NEVER EVER teach anything like this and worse put it on U Tube. They explained nothing that was even remotely important. This is the problem its all **** and the art of photography keeps getting lost daily to idiots that put this crap on.

Little harsh yea it is but it is a insult to real instructors that actually TEACH.
Photography is all about experimentation and without it you will never learn art.

I thought the video of the lady telling people how to become a professional photographer by using P mode was more entertaining, and about equally informative.

ok, I think I have it now and it explains all the issues I have had shooting landscapes.
    1) I do not have a fish-eye for my arca
    2) No P mode either
    3) I have been shooting at f/11, damn I should be trying f/29
    4) I still haven't figured out how to use a ND grad with a fish-eye
I learned a thing or two
