There is a rumour of a new HB camera - at one time if was thought to be a new Xpan..... now a small compact MFD.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Any exciting new things coming out during Photokina 2012?

I only bet on a Leica M10 with a CMOS sensor, but still a traditional rangefinder. A M28/1.4 FLE ASPH has been heavily rumored for some time now. Leica has been working on another camera with EVF and all that for a while ... this is the one that supposedly will take the R lenses with an adapter.

Given Leica's size, the fact they have not completed the move to the new factory, and that resources probably are focused on the M rangefinder money maker, how much attention will be placed on the S system is debatable. The new S Leaf Shutter lenses won't be available until October, and the long awaited S-24mm has yet to be announced as a real item. Frankly, I'm not sure what they could do to improve the S2 camera ... IMO, the only real possibility for a S3 would be switching to a MFD CMOS sensor with live view and all that, and maybe a different multi-point AF system. If so, they'd be the first to go with a custom made CMOS in a larger sensor camera ... can't imagine what that would cost in Leica dollars

Hasselblad is totally inscrutable, and always has been. As a customer, I've been bombarded with their price reduction notice and aggressive trade-in offers ... which conspicuously end in September 2012, the month of Photokina

Here's my Hassey prediction ... based on the fact that they have discontinued production of all CF backs with iAdapter system, and have steadily integrated the H back, camera and finder more and more each year ... it is possible they may introduce a new fully integrated smaller and more nimble H mount camera and leave the tech camera applications to Leaf/Phase who dominate that market anyway. Pricing/Value will be the important part of that equation. As a H4D/60 owner, I'm pretty satisfied (except for the tardy clip-on battery), so it'll have to be pretty compelling to get my dollars.

I believe Phase One will roar back with a new camera body that matches their backs ... who will make it is the question in my mind. Personally, if it is Mamiya, it will be suspect and really have to prove itself, and not with just marketing speak like used with the DF camera. It is the weak link in the Phase One system and has been for some time.

I'm hoping to see a limited edition H4 camera encrusted in Swarovski crystals and finest quality ostrich scrotum leather. With a choice of colours please.

Quite frankly I'd be in shock if Phase One didn't present a completely new and MUCH improved camera. It's been a long time coming and my guess is they've been working hard on it ever since they bought Mamiya, possibly even before that. If the IQ backs and the industrial cameras are any indication I think we'll be pleasantly surprised.

If it isn't "scrotum leather" than it would be a no go for me.

I expect the usual collection of hyperbole and extravagant claims for incremental changes on most products.
It also appears that most vendors are trying to avoid announcing anything very new there as then it gets lost in the flood of noise from everyone else.

Canon 3D. Full frame sensor. 46MP. Makes all those who sold off their Canon gear for a D800 sick.

Phase One. Finally a decent body with multi-point AF and all sort of other wonderful gubbins that will make all those who sold off their MF gear for the D800 sick.

Alpa. A lens adapter for the 12 series that includes a shutter, to fit Canon lenses with full electronic control of aperture. That will make me sick because I'm about to buy an HCam

Regardless of an improved next generation DF body, the real weak link imho is the lack of a really kick-*** wide angle lens option ala Schneider (and in the same quality vein as the venerable 150D). Even if expensive (5K+), it would still be a less expensive option than buying a technical camera system. I'd like to see new wide angle lens offerings for the DF...

I heard POne/mamiya body will not be until 2013. We should see a replacement for the P45 (iq with long exposure but maybe not sensor+). Sony a99 FF 24MP and a 50/1.2 (but could be announced earlier). A low end FF nikon with 24mp? A new linhof GG or some other focusing aide for the techno/cs?

I am hoping for a weatherproof mirrorless option for the IQ180. I think it would be possible to have something almost like the Ixr with an iPhone style camera on the front side of it. This could feed the screen on the IQ180 back a "live view" image and you could adjust your composition just like people mount the iPhone on an ALPA. The camera would know what lens was mounted on the camera and adjust the frame accordingly. Add a completely weather sealed package and some more wide angle lenses, possibly some tilt/shift functions and you would make me cry. Boom boom, you have the speed of CMOS while the CCD lives on. I am ready to move on from weak viewfinders and mirror slap. You could even put a small LCD on top of the camera box to give people a looking down view. Bring it Phase One and give me a cut of the money for coming up with the idea. I wish.

I wouldn't hold your breath for the IQ version of a P45+. When I spoke with the development manager of the IQ series he was at pains to point out their inability to do this without a new source of sensors and the lack of such source. He was a straight-up engineer/manager who looked me straight in the eye without any marketing BS so I tend to believe him. (Either that or one heck of a poker player)

For my "digital" MF I am absolutely curious about the new Plustek 120 scanner. Hopefully we get a chance to see some real world presentations...

I wonder how Canon will price their higher megapixel camera that most suppose will happen. Their lower megapixel 5D3 is already more expensive than the D800.

I would like to second this as I did the Phase One Certified Professional training and was told by a few of the higher up Phase One staff that the new Dalsa chips are unable to handle the longer exposures in the IQ backs, and it is most likely not going to happen considering the cease of use for the Kodak chips in the P45+

I would have loved a long exposure back with the IQ features.

I second the call for a 50mm Tilt-shift Phase one lens. Even better yet would be a tilt shift adapter which I could use for all my other lenses. Does anyone make an after market product like that?

Not unless you have a short-mount lens.

    I would like to see:

    1. Lighter and ever more power Hensel Porty system! Plus next generation of Porty Ring flash.

    2. More variants of Westcott Polyester Scenic backgrounds. I have a number of these, and they are stunning, absolutely perfect for studio work.

    3. A complete rewrite/re-engineering of Hasselblad Phocus. Better performance, especially when switching to Crop mode and stable tethering with camera.

These will best complement my H4D-40.

Re: Any exciting new things coming out during Photokina 2012?

My wants are pretty simple and more achievable as I would really like to see a new version of Capture One (version 7) that includes more local adjustment options including, colour balance and noise reduction. However more importantly I would like to control opacity of each layer and if possible, blend mode. A simple graduated filter adjustment option is also needed that can be coloured like Adobe allow in Camera RAW.

A new Phase body would be nice but I fear at a cost of probably three or four Nikon D800's it won't tempt me away from the highly capable DF of present.

Re: Any exciting new things coming out during Photokina 2012?

    Hi,

What I will like (within what possible with limited investment):

    1. A new Camera system from Hasselblad:
    * More responsive, I will love to see 1.2fps with good buffer
    * Second generation true focus technology
    * Increase resolution with price shift : The hight end will be the H5D80, the entry the H5D-40 the 31 out
    * This one is harder, because I don't know if the Hasselblad multishoot module can work with dalsa sized sensors: H5D-320
    * Improved battery.
    * One extra fast lens.

The other question is Phase One: If PhaseOne introduces a new Camera and Hasselblad do nothing It will be very difficult to justify selecting a H4D as a camera. Two years of delay on terms of sensor technology can be outset by a good system. But going as far will be difficult.

In the not going to happen desires:
    * Hasselblad introduces a full new set of lenses, optically better, 1/1600 sync, faster etc.
    * Hasselblad and Phase one announce big merge.
    * A new Cmos sensor with Medium Format color rendition is anounced.
    * Vulcans arrive and help us eliminate poverty, disease and suffering within a single century

    Best regards,
    James

Ditto on the Capture One ver7, and changes. I would love to have an opacity slider, however I doubt that will happen.
And please more local adjustments than 5. I have gotten to where I am using local adjustments more than anything else. Love them. But I quickly run out
with the max at 5 per image.

    Hi,

You are right. The issue is momentum: The company needs new buyers. They will consider if there is investment and future on the platform.

So, I strongly believe they need to show commitment. If they don't and Phase One either we will see more and more people opting to rent and from there the downstream spiral will almost inevitable.

In the other hand if Hasselblad don't show commitment, but Phase One shows a strong camera system the balance will change quite a bit.

For me, is not just the progress of Canon and Nikon. A medium format system is, for most people, a massive investment on a platform. They need to show to the potential costumer that there is a roadmap for the platform.

    Best regards,

Forget that one and yes, defiantly need more than five per image. A drawing performance boost is also much needed. Drawing/erasing really lags and needs to be more real time IMO.

Leica did suggest some months ago that they would be showing a new TTL electronic camera system. That would be neat. Of course, the rumors are flying about a Nikon D600.

What I'd like at Photokina time is the time to go to Photokina. That would be more fun for me than any bushel load of new equipment as I have everything I need equipment-wise. ;-)

Re: Any exciting new things coming out during Photokina 2012?

I, for one, having just gotten myself into the wide world of the Xpan, would love to see

    - a digital Hasselblad Xpan produced by Fuji
    - utilizing the same CMOS sensor type as the X Pro 1 (no AA filter, does not use a Bayer array) but at 65x24mm
    - a bright rangefinder viewfinder for focusing instead of a hybrid viewfinder
    - usable/clean high ISO images up to ISO3200
    - support for the Xpan's X-mount lenses (30/5.6 Asph, 45/4, 90/4), up to 30 minutes long exposure capability, shooting to SDXC/SDHC cards at 3 fps, Live View, priced around USD4-5k with a 45/4 lens without center filter.

This would have a multifold effect - a revival of the Hasseblad X-series, a possible revival of film panoramic camera, establishment of Hasseblad in a unique niche, all without having to invest crazy money in development of expensive lenses (the Xpan lenses have more in common with MF lenses than 35mm lenses), while leaving the body wizardry to Fuji who have been successful with their own X100 and X Pro 1

I'm more than happy with the odds and ends Cambo has released and wonder if they held back on the bigger stuff.

there is a rumor that Alpa is coming out a new camera....

    can anyone confirm that?

better/more precision focusing system + tilt/swing ability for wide angle?

What else do you need to improve from current tech system in general?

The d800 (in my personal experience) is already making sick, on it's own, some of us who sold off our MF gear

If CMOS is the next thing in MF, I sure hope the color is better than current 35mm CMOS. Very few of them have color accuracy and separation of the CCD sensors. Maybe Leica will pull it off.

That really isn't the fault of CMOS per se. CMOS manufacturers like Sony and Canon seem to be using Bayer filters with spectral bandpasses which overlap more than necessary. This would appear to be an attempt to get more luminance S/N, especially at high ISO where it's needed most.

One gets the sense you aren't totally satisfied?

You think? Topic for another thread... (but I'm not happy with the IQ. Functionally the camera is fantastic, but doesn't deliver the IQ goods in my hands... and I came from a big, slow RZ/Aptus so I think I know how to work with high-res cameras that need to be used carefully)

Since Hasselblad came out with a Ferrari version of their camera, I am hoping Leica jump on the bandwagon and release a Harley Davidson edition of the S2. Perhaps someone could get Victoria Beckham or Kim Kardashian to design a camera.

No directly MFD but many here use lighting with their Phase/Blad/Leaf so wondering if there are any Profoto kit rumours flying about. I'm in the market for another Battery generator to go with the rather excellent AcuteB2 AirS I've had for a few months.

Profoto have reduces prices on the AcuteB2 and Pro7B generators recently so wondering if we'll be getting AcuteB3's and Pro8B's at Photokina?

A digital Acute 600B would get my attention so it could be AIR controlled from the camera ... so would one with two head outlets ... but only if they keep it close to the same size.

Also interested in what Hensel may bring to Photokina.

Woo, a digital AcuteB would be nice and not thought of that. A option to have an AcuteB 1200 with two head outlets as an option would be nice too.

Fingers crossed for something new, however the offers on the current AcuteB2 are very tempting as I really love mine.

I think that may only happen if they redesign the whole Acute generator line-up for digital AIR control ...or introduce a new line and phase out the Acute series.

I don't think they'd do an Acute 1200B because it would encroach on their other battery generators.

My suggestion of a 2 outlet 600B AIR is because many modern cameras are offering higher ISO, and the general use of a 600 box with two heads is more feasible ... like the very successful Elinchrom Quadra RX with two heads and 400w/s.

Frankly, I'm also tempted by the offers on the current 600B AIR ... including the free Acute B head. I love mine also. I fear any future replacement will be accompanied by a more typical Profoto price tag

BTW, I'm super pleased with the D1's that replaced my older Compacts I had forever. I've been going mobile with those by using the Paul C Buff Vagabond Mini Lithiums.

I think the Acute generators are also being offered with a big discount at the moment so maybe not out of the running for a whole new Acute design?

The D1's are an amazing package with a fine spec but IMO when travelling, nothing beats a generator as the heads are so small and compact especially the B versions. The D1 is just a big, heavy cumbersome head and unlike other manufacturers having a lower powered head doesn't change the size. In the grand scheme of things a battery generator/head combo is probably a similar weight to a D1/Battery combo but it feels more compact in use to me.
