Very disappointing to hear this Jack. Redress the old lens at a premium. Good for Mamiya/Phase margins, but does not offer much in optical performance for most users. Agree with Ken, how is this lens going to hold up on the P65+?

The spotted delivery record of new lenses from Mamiya certainly has to have Phase scratching their head.

It ain't, unless you crop the corners out. However, it may be very good in the center and so maybe worth it if your corners aren't important -- ???

But, if I had one, I'm certain I'd want to use all of that glorious full-frame capability.

I like your new avatar bud. I really wanted the 45mm too . I may just stay pat and cancel my order. Still thinking about it.

Maybe just being the hopeless optimist that I am----and maybe Jack just got a "bad" copy.....

Might be able to test the new 45mm on the P65+ in February...

I'm thinking the same thing Ken. May have Chris send it anyway and try a different copy that is coming next week or so.

Maybe, but it was virtually *identical* in performance to my last old version, which makes me think it's more endemic to how they perform...

Sorry to hear this, Jack. It would be a shame if Mamiya take the path of simply re-dressing their old lens line-up and raising the prices. I'm not thrilled about Mamiya moving into Hasselblad price territory in general, but if they do so with sub-par glass it will be suicide.

Guess I'll be holding on to my "last-generation" stuff for now (I shouldn't be thinking about upgrading now anyway ).

I like the new avatar, Jack. Less intimidating!

Bummer about the lens. Do you think maybe this is just a "sample variation" (i.e., you got a dud)? Aside from the AF/MF ring switch, it seems there's no reason to ditch my 45mm non-D, which I got for a very nice used price.

PS: Jack, dig the avatar too. Took me a second to realize it was you posting, so used to associating with people's avatars.

I hope to test the 45mm D f2.8 either today or tomorrow. I'll try to post before the holidays.

    Re: Mamiya 45mm F2.8 "D" Press Release

I've been shooting with a non D 45mm for a few weeks now.
Works well and I do notice the ever so slightly soft corners.

What surprises is me is the noise! (I mean acoustic here, not digital noise)
When it focuses it sound like a small garbage disposal.
Otherwise the lens works just fine and foucses accurately.

My other lenses foucus quietly and smoothly.

Is this the common experience or it my lens about to explode?

    cheer,

Some of the older lenses do sound horrible when focusing -- that was one of my positive comments on the new one, it is virtually silent in focus. The only non-AF switch lens I currently own is the 55, and mine is pretty quiet...

    Re: Mamiya 45mm F2.8 "D" Press Release

    Hi Eric,

I've heard reports of differing noise levels from the various non-D lenses, but I have not experienced that in my kit. Most of my lenses are non-D, including the 45mm, and mine is rather quiet. In fact, it may bit quieter/smoother sounding than my 55mm - or sort of seemed so just now. In my kit, the non-AF clutched lenses all sound about the same in terms of mechanical fluidity, if you will.

Not sure that any of this is indicative of anything though.
