Cheap accessories for MF that make life easier !

We spend enough on MF digital. Backs the price of a decent car. Technical bodies, lenses in the $6-7-8,000 range now. Back upgrades costing $12-14,000. High time for a thread on those cheap little accessories that remind you that for pocket change (relatively speaking) you can get something that makes your life better. Shall we say, under $100?

    I'll make some opening suggestions:

A $13.95 rubber lens hood from B&H that screws into my mucho expensivo 90mm HR Alpagon. It's 3 position, from folded back to midway (good for stitching) to 'tele' which is good for straight shot at this focal length.

and the snap in lens cap to fit that: a snip for that snap at $3.95 !

I have a couple of other cheapies, to follow... if you trade!

I love that lens hood - had one on my Contax 80mm lens and it was perfect. Lasted years and is still going.

One cheap plastic accessory you can get for free--a credit card! Whether you can keep it...

One thing I actually use, stuff sacks used for climbing/hiking gear for dust protection. I have a nylon sack that can slip over the camera as I am hanging it around my neck. I use the draw string to keep it from sliding off. When I want to shoot, just loosen the string and slide the bag off.

I just got a bunch of short shutter release cables so I have one pre-attached to each lens, makes setup time of my Techno faster.

The 20x loupe for critical focusing I use is $50, better than all the loupes that was sold together with the Techno at the time. I might replace it with the new Silvestri 12x though, don't know if it breaks the $100 mark or not.

This might be too obvious but the mamiya cable release is very expensive and when ours fell apart it revealed some incredibly cheap and nasty design that my canon chinese ebay releases beat hands down. Solution, just use a 10 buck screw in cable release instead! Can do everything the electronic one can and you can have a few backups in the bag too.

Hold your horses, I have a trick that involves a tiny piece of duct tape!
Stay put for another two days and I will post it.

For smooth video pans, chain two or three rubber bands together and hook one end of the chain to the the panning lever of the ball/fluid head and pull gently on the other end. Not my idea, but I can't remember where I saw it.

I pack a small ruler that I can tape to the base of my Techno, then I can do focus-stacking at f/16 by moving 0.5mm between shots. I rarely do stacking though, but does not take up much space in the bag.

I use one of these on my Mamiya. Cost about €2 IIRC.

And for under $100, I assembled a remote release/timer/intervalometer for my 645AFD from three off-the-shelf parts which click together. Works with film backs too.

Then there's the Mamiya leather right hand strap (designed for a 645 Pro, bought as NOS for around a tenner) that I fitted to the left hand side of my 645AFD; it attaches to the usual strap lug on the top and to the strap lug built into my RRS generic-Mamiya QR plate on the bottom. Makes it comfortable to carry the camera (alternative to hanging it around my neck all the time), and stabilizes hand holding it in use with an AF lens - my left hand cradles and wraps around the side of the body in the same way that one holds up a camcorder.

Has anyone else pimped their Mamiya?

Well, I just bought a very cheap Mamiya 7II polarizing filter. I had actually ordered a regular 77mm filter for my rz67 for $35,
instead I got a NIB pola filter for the 7II, value: $240

Not quite an elastic band but close. I always carry a couple of shower caps to put over my DB when it's drizzling or raining.

I often get them free in hotel/motel rooms gratis of course.

Another freebie is the D type clip (mine came free from a show) I clip it to my rucksack and then clip the other end to the book under my tripod. So simple, bag is always in front of me, kit doesn't get mislaid or lost as dusk fades into darkness.
