Too many gear to choose from but DON"T WANT TO SELL

I reached a point where I have way too much gear in five separate systems that I have a hard time deciding which one to use. Yet somehow I convince myself that each of these systems serve a different purpose: street, sport, medium format landscape, technical, and Sigma DPM (in its own awesome category), that I don't want to sell any of them!

I'm sure i'm not alone in this. What do you do?

    I'm sorry.

    Is there a problem here?

What do you do? Well, you buy another lens of course!

Re: Too many gear to choose from but DON"T WANT TO SELL

Street, sport, and landscape are types of photographs and you can have one system that does all that. If you enjoy collecting and using different types of cameras, that is fine--you do not need to justify it. Rationalization is just another word for trying to con yourself into feeling better.

Personally, I like to simplify. I have a Pentax 645D and a few lenses and an RX1. they take care of what I need. But I know other that would feel deprived if they could fit everything into one bag, or even ten bags and a truck.

Ooooh , I can understand that very well .
I was never good in selling gear , but always good in buying .
At least , I have reduced my gear to three systems now .
PANASONIC LUMIX G for easy use as a kind of digital pola .
A very extensive HASSELBLAD V-SYSTEM and my most beloved ALPA System .
Sold with big loss of money my BRONICA RF645 , FUJI GW690III and HORSEMAN SW612P , but I don't regret that . I felt a kind of relief , as they were never used since a long time . puuuh .

One can never have too much gear. Remember the old saying: He who dies with the most toys, wins.

The only justification excuse you need is to your significant other.

My current collection: Pentax 645d, various lenses, Pentax K5, various lenses, Pentax K01, SONY a850 and a couple of lenses, Graflex 4x5, couple of lenses, Baby Graphic 6x9, custom 4x5 point and shoot system, Olympus XZ1, Canon M41, Canon HDV20.

I do like Shashin, I have a little camera (NEX-7) a big camera (Alpa Max), and a studio rail (AS ML2)
But, I still have an Ebony 4x5", Pentax 6x7, RZ67IID and Nikon D700 to sell!

PS: I was proud of myself when I sold my Canon G9 to a colleague for $100 in January.

    Leica M9, six lenses.
    Sony a99, a900, three lenses.
    Phase DF, IQ180, six lenses.

I don't feel even remotely troubled - except I'm still vacillating about a tech cam.

Re: Too many gear to choose from but DON"T WANT TO SELL

Seriously, this has become worse (or should that be better...) with digital. With film, I could just buy another kind of film to change the whole system. Now, if I want to try another sensor, I have to buy a completely new body, or in the worst... sorry, best case, a completely new system. And the cost? It's cheaper to have several camera systems than several wives, or so friends keep telling me, those who have tried both...

and what do I search for on ebay....8X10...

Pah ... that's nothing! I have several friends (including a couple here on GetDPI) who could easily put that small collection to shame (and I don't mean me btw).

I keep as much stuff as I need / want.

But I am a working professional and for some jobs I need/want certain capabilities on hand to get the job done in the best way I can within my means.

There is no perfect camera. Well, at least not yet. Would be cool to have a Canon 1MF, with a large sensor (40x50mm), 80MP with low noise and exposures up to a few hours. Full set of tilt shift lenses with tripod mounts and 100mm image circles. But also be able to use the Canon EF lenses using only the 24x36mm center part of the sensor. And while I am at it why not a 15-200mm f2 IS distortion free and lightweight lens.

Now seriously, its a give and take.

I have purchased gear, used it then determine I want something else. Also, your photography is not static, it might change and you might go one way and then your gear priorities change accordingly.

I generally first think and know what I want the images to be, then I look for the tools that help me get there.

But, its not always so linear, sometimes there are some good surprises, if you dont try, you never know

Ken R, you're just not a true gear slut. You are (shudder!) reasonable.

Personally, I feel an obligation to contribute to the world economy by supporting camera manufacturers. Think of the terrible pain of unemployment, hunger, broken families, alcoholism, even deaths, that would ensue if we all didn't buy gear.

It's the humanitarian thing to do.

I think I have made my share of donations

But looking at my gear drawers, boxes and cases I have quite a bit of stuff. Its just that most of it is lighting and grip related (profoto, chimera, photoflex etc). I have many stands and adapters to mount stuff on stuff for stuff. Its insane. I am guilty of hoarding but honest to god I need every piece. Not all the time but when the need arises I know its there

Don't we always find good reasons and exuses to justify the buy of more , better and even more expensive gear ? ? ?
But these reasons are the "best" I have ever heard of .
I am going to check my account right now if I can afford to buy an ALPA FPS + IQ260 .

Yikes! Me too.....and I can't remember the last time I used one of the six 4x5 cameras I own now.

This thread is great....reading about the extensive gear collections of my fellow GetDPI members, I know I'm in good company.

I usually find the cameras photographers connect to the most are the ones they use the least.

Re: Too many gear to choose from but DON"T WANT TO SELL

Even though I still buy some new gear here and then my overall tendency is to sell more than I buy.
I still also own and use 5 systems (rx100,OMD,5d,Leica M and S) The x100 is the one I use not much. There is overlap between the 5d and the S but the S still beats in terms of IQ and the 5d for fast continuous AF and using zooms. The OMD is the one for bad weather family tours on the bike.
And the M9 is the one which comes close in IQ to the S and is still portable and good for travel and vacation.
I thought about getting out of the S/MF several times but I love the IQ and the large viewfinder. So I will stay in as long as I can afford it.
For the DSLR Kit I have reduced the number of lenses. Now mainly use 2470 and 70200 and 50/1.2.

Personally, I feel an obligation to contribute to the world economy by supporting camera manufacturers. Think of the terrible pain of unemployment, hunger, broken families, alcoholism, even deaths, that would ensue if we all didn't buy gear.

It's the humanitarian thing to do.
Bill I use that line on my wife and the baseball bat still comes out to play. ROTFLMAO

It was good practice trying it on us though but we are not falling for it since I think we all have used that line once or twice ourselves.

Be well my friend and you keep buying. Just remember you guys get bored of stuff dont sell it donate to Guy he can have some fun with it. Its the smart thing to do.

What we really realy really need is a Exchange Pool. Maybe a GetDPI rental house

"Its the smart thing to do."

And you don't have to worry about whether you sold for too little.

I find that sometimes it can be a good thing to NOT use the "appropriate" camera for the job. Limitations can lead to some pretty interesting and unique results.

My problem is I usually gravitate towards big, slow and cumbersome cameras, something I regret every time I travel (which I do a lot). But then I see the results, and all that back pain seems worth it, or so I tell myself.

Creativity is a cruel and demanding mistress.

I'm of mixed standing on this, on one hand I just love lugging big impractical cameras around, but sometimes cheese is just the topping that works.

Just about an hour ago I was using my 5D2 with grip and 85L and wasn't getting a satisfactory result no matter what, I was about to freak out, so I grab my 400D with mutilated kit lens panic button and make the best shots of the day.

I think if I had an iPhone I would've gotten a Pulitzer by now.
