    New camera from Phase One?

Two years ago I spent some time on a shoot with a senior engineer from Phase One who hinted strongly about a completely new camera to replace the DF. I haven't heard anything since - has anyone else?

I can hear the echo of the water dripping softly in the distance from the roof of the cavern.
    But nothing about that.

Photokina,3 months away, more than likely they will wait till then, or pop the announcement just before.

That's if the announcement is coming this year.

Wouldn't a new body and 45mm TS-E lens be great!

Re: New camera from Phase One?

For this new camera you are dreaming about, what are you hoping it will be like?

From what I have read, this is what people want from a new Phase One camera body:

    Easier balance
    Larger LCD panel
Larger viewfinder with split /micro prism for manual focus
AFL and AEL buttons you can reach and press easily, while still looking through the viewfinder
    Multiple autofocus points
Viewfinder that shows exactly where the camera has locked focus
    Custom bracketing choices
Bracketing and exposure to be decoupled
Focal plane shutter stays open during mirror lock-up mode when using leaf shutter lenses

Re: New camera from Phase One?

I am sure others have other points of critical interest.

"Viewfinder that shows exactly where the camera has locked focus"

The auto focus points need to be precise, not so broad in application that they remain largely irrelevant. backing up your point I think Steve.

The camera needs to at least be able to be used on the IQ 140/160/180 but obviously the P series back owners will also be looking for a possible upgrade.

The camera should at least match the feature list of the H5D ( I accept not with H's patented focus technology) - but things like a single button press custom white balance as an example.

and I am sure others have even more things on their wish list.

Re: New camera from Phase One?

How about just rebranding and perhaps "modernising" the Hy6?
    I.e.:
1: Make the camera's back rotate for landscape / portrait, rather than the back itself rotating.
2: At least three, preferably five widely spaced focus points in key positions within the frame, rather than bunched in the dead centre.
3: Battery in body that can also power the back or, if battery is installed in back, doubles the backs life (minus what it takes to power the body".)
4: Duel shutter system with option to keep focal plane shutter open to reduce shutter vibration in certain applications.

Oh yeah, and dreams are free...

    yes,
even if it will be larger and heavier, at least make the body 6x6, just like the Hy6. (this comes from a studio guy;-)
So we don't have to buy a new body again in 10 years when sensors may be larger.

Photokina is the best bet, it would seem that nearly every camera manufacturer is holding out to announce something in September or thereabout.

But: all lenses now are 645, so image circle won't reach 6x6. And if lenses have shade for landscape 645-format, you even can't turn the sensor... And larger sensor won't work, as image circle won't cover this. They should build a body where you can swap the mount from Mamiya to PQ

Re: New camera from Phase One?

That's part of the problem with digital in general, companies feel a need to stick to legacy designs, lens mounts and formats. How about they introduce a new range of lenses (I know, fat chance!) that does cover a 6x6 frame – so you can rotate the sensor – but retain the same mount? Is that possible? Again, dreams are free...

The speed of development is also a problem - it's achingly slow - too slow in fact to be optimistic about the health of the segment in the long term.

The DF was released in 2009 and 5 years later we're still wondering if a replacement will appear (and no, the DF+ doesn't count).

It's the internet. If there were the silliest imaginable rumor, it'd result in dozens of posts.

I think you will be happily surprised soon. Phase is due for their spring announcements and the new body seems to be priority number 1. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Re: New camera from Phase One?

For what it may be worth here are some thoughts:

Photokina happens every two years so there is no Photokina this year. Surely by 2016 the window will have closed ?

At the last Photokina LuLa did an interview with the CEO of Phase One who said first half 2015. But such statements in the past have come and gone.

There was a new trade show planned for London in May this year called Click the Photography Show. Phase One was listed as one of four main sponsors but the show has now disappeared without trace and the organisers told me this morning that it has been cancelled due to lack of support from the trade. There is a well established show 100 miles away in Birmingham in March every year so it's not an entirely a surprise that the UK market could not support two so close together. So the show went before it ever happened.

Of all the camera manufacturers I know, the updated / replacement DF body is the longest running empty gesture I've seen.

I thought the replacement time for the Canon 1Ds3 was bad.....

Re: New camera from Phase One?

I'm sure the new Phase camera body is on the horizon.

But I sure as hell haven't seen a replacement for the Canon 1Ds Mark III---which is an older body than the Phase DF+ for sure. No announcements from Canon either. It's at the point where I'm getting too old to hoist a big 1D series and may settle for 5Dsr. That must be the Canon strategy...

I think this is going to be an expensive year for all enablers alike---in all formats.

Bill, did you look outside today? Whatever DF++++ comes out, I think I'm still better off shooting with my tech cam in saran wrap for protection from our weather. I have waited so long now, that whatever will come out will still be a BIG YAWN!

Sorry for being so negative.....but I cannot imagine people that really do need an SLR and spent oodles on a Phase back and have been now waiting for this thing while 3 generations of backs have come and gone.

I picked up a friend's H5D yesterday - it's a lovely, functional thing that feels like it's a modern camera, not a rehash of something from 1990. It was good to see that a new design is possible. I felt even inspired by it... a revelation!

Hmmm... a camera body to directly compete with H5X's quality and ergonomics would seem like a good idea...

Heck just get a 645Z at under $8k and be done with it since their new sealed lenses are quite sharp.

Re: New camera from Phase One?

It's soon, but will be too expensive for me, given what the specs will likely be. DF+ bodies are still $5990, just like the DF before it. Demand must not be very high to say the least. No end of life fire sales in MFDB land. My prediction is the body will either be the same price, or closer to $9k, because they can.

Backward compatibility with older backs might be an issue as well, along with lenses. It may be a case of "be careful what you wish for", some difficult choices may have been made. Recall when film back support went away for instance. I've heard that AF technology is locked up in several patents still, and that the phase detection chips aren't made larger than 35mm; I expect more of less for more ($$) like before.

Well, I'm sorry I raised the subject! I can be patient but my DF is pretty ancient and well-used now. I have 6 lenses and an IQ180 so I'm heavily invested. I need a decent replacement.

New Phase promotion: "Purchase a new IQ2 series digital back and receive a new DF+ camera and 80mm LS lens for free."

Probably the want to get rid of current DF inventory. So Defiantly something is coming very soon.

Or they try to avoid people buying the back with another maker's body.... Or trying to persuade people to change the other maker's body they have... Or they are just too expensive and they discount accordingly.

Nothing new. I recall Phase has bundled camera bodies and the 80mm lens before. It's just further incentive to enter Dante's Inferno.

The fact it doesn't apply to the CMOS back might indicate that they also want to clear out their CCD inventory.

When I purchased my first MFDB P45+, Phase had year end deal - Free AFDx, Phase/Mamiya 80mm f/2.8 & Phase 28mm f/4.5. I know what that deal did to my bank account in long run :-(

Well.....certainly not "free" as I am sure we all understand. I always love it when a company asks us to spend money to save money.

My money is on the 645Z. You can get of them or maybe more for the price of one Phase One.

I'm still hanging my hat on June. I'm ready to go to Atlanta and hang out in the receiving area with Anthony....

Being able to use Leaf Shutter lenses and fast flash sync makes all the difference in the world. Otherwise, I'd love to convert a 645z to full spectrum...
