Question Canon glass and Arca R-mount

A-S is apparently working on a f-line/m-line/universalis canon adapter, unfortunately nothing in sight for the R-line cameras.

Unless I'm missing something designing a simple R-mount adapter for canon, without aperture control, doesn't seem very complicated. A-S could use their existing lens tube system, make it the right length for the required flange distance, and put a canon mount on top of it (instead of the circular copal 0 plate). And voilą, we could use those TSEs and 11-24...

    Thoughts ?

Re: Canon glass and Arca R-mount

You must not have been at photo plus this week then I take it?

Digital Transitions and Arca Swiss shared a booth there and were showing off the Canon lens solutions Arca is releasing for BOTH their view cameras and R-Series tech bodies. The main obstacle is that, without a leaf shutter (eg copal) you need a focal plane shutter. In the case of Arca Swiss they have this available (soon) for any of their systems in the form of their Arca Swiss FP.

All components for Canon lens use on either platform said to be available in December. Of course with all things Arca Swiss I'm skeptical of final release date until I actually have a half dozen sitting in our office ready to sell.

I'll be writing a blog article about this hopefully this week; didn't have a chance to in the chaos that is our photo plus week.

You guessed right, Doug, not everyone lives in the US or can afford a trip there for a photo expo. The only bit of news regarding Arca was shared by Chris Barrett, and it was about the adapter for the view cameras.

Of course my 'idea' implied the FP is involved in the chain, unless we have backs with global shutters tomorrow... Looking forward to reading your report then.

    Hi Doug,

Looking forward to your article. Could you maybe quickly explain if the Arca mount will support electronic aperture adjustment with the Canon lenses?

Even if it doesn't, might be interesting to try this combo with a manual lens such as the Samyang 14 f/2.8 and a digi back!

    Electronic aperture control: yes

Thanks, Doug. That is great news indeed and opens up a lot of possibilities for Arca users.

Indeed. Arca's fully modular approach to this I think is excellent. Now they just need to ship it!

Re: Canon glass and Arca R-mount

I saw two different Canon mounts at the Expo. One was a lensboard for the view cameras and the other mounted on R Cameras. With a digital back, you'll need their focal plane shutter. On a view camera, you can mount a dslr or mirrorless and the Canon board is self contained with a USB out for power (via any small usb battery).

Let me know if you guys have any more questions (though I spent a short time with the gear).
