hello experts,

I am interested to buy latest & greatest CF Compact Flash card from Sandisk:
Sandisk Extreme PRO CF UDMA7 with 160 Mb/s

Looks like this card is on the marked since Jan-2011:
https://www.sandisk.com/about/media...rld’s-fastest-high-capacity-compactflash-card
https://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/compact-flash/extremepro-compactflash

However, looking on the PhaseOne compatibility list last updated Aug-2015:
https://www.phaseone.com/en/Search/Article.aspx?articleid=1591
I can not find any Extreme PRO UDMA7 cards listed and this could be due to 2 reasons:
1) This card was tested and found to be incompatible.
2) This card was not tested at all.

Has anyone on this forum tried to use this Extreme PRO UDMA7 card and happy with compatibility?

Have a great weekend.

UDMA7 support was added at the IQ generation. The card will probably work, but you'd be paying for speed you won't be able to take advantage of (at least during the shooting phase; the computer-dump part of your shoot would be faster).

Thank you, just to be clear: I don't have any IQ back and not planning to get one. I have P30+ only.

Do I understand you well that if I insert such CF card into my P30+ it will not get recognized and hence will not work at all?

What should happen is that the back should stop the card down to some slower speed it and the card support. You may lose burst mode performance, which I suspect is not something you care about in a P30+.

I've used UDMA7 cards in my P30 without any noticeable issues, shared with my Canon cameras. Faster card dumps on the computer are a big benefit.

If you are buying exclusively for a P30+, you could probably get better prices buying slower flash, and be happy with the performance.

One thing to look out for when buying the larger cards is that not all cameras can format them correctly: I've seen 8+GB cards limited to 2GB of usable space post-in-camera format. I can't remember if the P30 had this issue, but if you encounter it, format the card to FAT on the computer: Once the FS is created, I have never seen any camera struggle with larger cards.

Quoting myself from earlier...
Doug, rephrasing usually works better than repetition.
I understood your initial response that udma7 support was added at the IQ generation.
To me it says that there was no support previously in P backs.

Your statement 'the card will probably work' I read like you not sure if that support of udma7 in IQ was reliable and/or stable.
Also, I understood that DESPITE adding support of udma7 in IQ, benefits are noticeable only if inserted in PC.

Now, it is all clarified. Thanks, anyway.

I recall a discussion on card speeds on the Phase One Forum where it was stated the newer faster cards would work but by default the software, not recognising the card, would slow down to the slowest save speed for safety which could actually be slower than a "normal" card UDMA6. So it would actually be a retrograde step.

The quote is, now I found it again:

I was planning or ordering a couple of SanDisk Extreme 60 MB/s 32GB cards. But there seems to be different versions listed on Amazon, some of which are "older versions". And there are now 95 MB/s cards available.
The cards you refer to is UDMA 7 cards which is not supported by the P45+ since it did not exist during the time the P45+ was in production.
It should still work in the P45+ but might be slower then corresponding UDMA6 card as the back will revert to basic "PIO" mode.

Is apparently still valid, it's not a matter of testing or not the backs don't have the hardware or firmware to work with the faster cards now available.

I found a further Forum Post, the OP should consider joining :D:

It's important to note that though UDMA7 cards are rated faster, the technology within P+ backs is unable to take advantage of this. When a UDMA7 card is mounted within a P+ back, the back reverts to PIO, which is limited to 18mb/s; you will actually see slower performance with these cards. It is highly recommended that you use UDMA4 cards (45mb/s) as that's the max for these backs.
Phase One

I know that contradicts the UDMA6 statement but the support page does list compatible cards up to 60mb/s and the UDMA series is rather difficult to establish, even from the makers and the page does list those that work, it doesn't specify how well they work, the UDAMA7 will work bit just slowly!!
