New Rodenstock HRSW coming - 135/140mm!

Apparently a new Rodenstock Tech lens is on the way - somewhere between 135 and 140mm
with 120mm + image circle for shifting/stitching, and performance to match or exceed the incredible yellow banded 90mm one.

Time to start saving the pennies!

Just when I thought that my technical camera money pit had bottomed out! :watch:

Is there a link or other source of information to read more details? Any time frame for release? (I don't want to bug Graham too much until after the date of release ;))

I got it word of mouth from a very reputable camera store. Can't find anything online, but I trust the person giving info. It's so specialised, no reason to think it's a ruse or wishful thinking.

Would imagine announced in/around photokina? But that's just my guess.

My wish is for an updated, big IC 55mm like HR-W series, but bigger IC. With Schneider pulling out and their 60mm no longer in production, there's no new options to upgrade my very average 55mm APO-SD. One can only hope.

update: 138mm apparently, though it may be presented as 140mm.
and it's Rodenstock's first lens designed for the coming 150Mp backs. So should be pretty darn good, and... pretty darn expensive!

What’s wrong with the 55mm APO digital? Why do you consider it very average?

I really like my 55mm APO digital. It's sharp (with IQ150), I can shift to the limit of my WRS and it stays sharp!
I don't need more.

Ben

I find it slightly better than average unless using the centre filter, which results in 2.5 stops of lost light. The filter improves noise performance after LCC, which in turn helps maximise detail.

I do a lot of quite large shifts, 12-16mm, plus a lot of stitching to make 6x12 panoramas (or 6x13.3 to be exact. It's a weird ratio, but it matches what I get / got from my Technorama) and the outer 1/4 of the frame really does suffer sharpness drop off and increased chromatic aberrations, especially without the CF.

The 40 HRW I've used but never been able to afford, plus the 70 HRW I do own have proven much, much better in this regard. Excellent in fact.

I'm using a Credo 60.

In spite of finally a new lens, I wonder how viable this Large Format lens market still is?

I heard that the new lens line up will be available in Rodenstock eShutter only. (Production of Copal 0 shutters stopped years ago.) However, digital backs are now getting electronic shutters which may be the most convenient way of using these digital backs in most situations. In this case, Rodenstock eShutter offers no real advantage but adds bulk, complexity, and cost.

I heard the same. My best hope is a NO shutter option, (but with aperture of course) so you can use the Focal Plane shutter option that comes with Alpa FPS/Silex, Fuji MF body, etc. The eShutter only gives you up to 1/250th second which is simply not acceptable for a large range of applications. Freezing movement, to start with. Plus it's more electronics to control externally, and bring another headache to the table.

Guess I could look for an old Copal 0, swap it out, and lock the shutter open to work with FPS only, using the aperture, but man, what a waste...!

With the caveat not having looked at the optical design nor knowing much about optical designs, Apo-Sironar-Digital and Digaron-W are different generations, with different design parameters.

Comparing Apo-Sironar-Digital and Digaron-W, therefore, a bit like comparing oranges with apples.

A factory Rodenstock technician told me that each Rodenstock lens must be individually mated to its Copal shutter using spacers and other adjustments.

Each such mating costs about 700 euro (mating only, Copal shutter not included) and takes two weeks or so.
