I would guess that line was written by marketing, not by a Hasselblad historian ;-).

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

My head says the same 50 MP sensor in the X1D is (by far) the most likely outcome for the X1D mark II, but my heart would love to see the 100 MP BSI sensor and is totally ready to invest in Hasselblad if they surprise us this way. I even have my target lenses picked out...

I guess we'll find out in 41 hours, not that I'm counting.

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

I don't think it will be the 50MP sensor.

Simply due to the fact that there is no guaranty on how much longer Sony will produce that niche sensor. It might not be worth the time and effort for sony.

So for HB to reissue the X1D mkii with a 50 mp sensor would indicate rather poor thinking and use of money.

But I guess we will see in two days.

I would think that Fuji GFX 50S and 50R are going to be shipping for a while as well, the same sensor as X1D. IMO, there is definitely a market for 50Mp MF cameras. Since Hasselblad is apparently replacing X1D with a new model, I assume that it will be a 50Mp model. A 100Mp model should be offered in addition to a 50Mp model, IMO.

    That isn't the question though.

It is a matter of how long Sony will keep the 50MP chip alive. It will take valuable resources and space to keep the 50MP chips running. I don't see sony keeping the 50MP chip alive considering it is now 6 years old. It just wouldn't make sense when you can divert those resources especially considering that you have an alternate more advanced chip now.

I would wager they are discontinuing the chip / already have.

In the modern age a 6 year old design is ancient.

Also, they cannot provide advanced features of cameras unless they move to a sensor with pdaf on chip or some work around.

So there are going to be some quibbles of the X1d they simply cannot do away with on the old chip.

As I wrote, Fuji is using the same 50Mp chip in their cameras, and they will likely be manufacturing them for a long while. I doubt Sony would pull the rug under Hasselblad and Fuji. While the chip design is old, the image quality it produces is at least as good as one of the latest sensors. OSPDAF has its issues; I prefer a CDAF (or DFD) camera in MF. BSI could help with readout speed, but not that much. I do not know what more you could get from the latest technology sensor?

It literally does not cost Sony anything to produce old sensors. All it needs is to find a fab that would manufacture the wafers...

A 33x33 crop from the 100MP chip would give the 75MP square image of the V1D, so .... perhaps?

Not sure if it's for me but I thought the V1D concept was pretty sweet! There are a decent amount of ppl out there that seem to want square and don't want 100mp, so that could be a sweet spot for a lot of ppl looking at the X1D or looking to upgrade their X1D.

I also can't help but think its evidenced too by the caption "see our legacy become your future". If the V system isn't their legacy then idk what is.....

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

Now the image circle of the XCD lenses will support a 39x39mm square chip. That would fit inside the "full frame" 645 chips used by Phase One and Hasselblad... That would give, if my math is correct, a 97MP crop from the 150MP sensor...

... and cost a whole lot more than the 33x44 chip ...

    Matt

Oh, and the 21mm lens on even a 33x33mm chip is already wider than the SWC. On a 39x39mm chip?

I never cared to do the math, but I was under the impression that the initial V1D concept did take a 75mp crop from the 40x54mm 100mp chip of the H6D-100c/IQx100....cost-wise I'm not so sure the "crop from the larger sensor" approach makes sense, though. I know they're coming up on the lunar anniversary but I hope they can keep the cost of whatever they announce within the stratosphere

Good Lord! A chip large enough to crop square, vertical, or horizontal without moving the camera would be spectacular. With the XCD lenses, you could do it!

"Iconic Scandinavian design" [from instagram]....that's the V system i guess..not the X body.

could also simply be a digital 75mp SWC, but who knows maybe the "leaked" photo of the deeper body X1d is actually the real thing..102MP + IBIS

I FINALLY received my X1D dual battery charger last week after a 3-month wait. It's pretty neat. A lot more compact than I expected, seems to function like you'd expect. Still waiting on my release cord X that I ordered at the same time....

My expectations for tomorrow are pretty modest. Improved X1D (I'm in the 100mp-expecting camp) with usability improvements and similar form factor to current X1D, and possibly the zoom. Anything else is icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

I agree that the final teaser photo and tag line make a V1D much more likely! And since the photokina preview of the V1D explicitly said 75 MP square of a 100 MP sensor, I hope they choose the new (gfx100) Sony 100 MP BSI sensor.

I assume the first two teaser photos are of the X1Dm2, and not of the V1D. So two new cameras (both X mount) and a new lens? ❤️

I have no clue what they are going to show, but if it is a square 75mp V1 thingy, then I'm in deep trouble. I divorce, rent out the kids, sell all my clothes, plan something criminal, lie to everyone or whatever it takes....a V1 on the Alpa Plus...are you kidding!!! That's the ultimate! (alright, an V1 achromatic is the ultimate, guess it never ends)

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

The key question IF they release the V1D is what sensor?

The options from worst to best, in my opinion:

Old 50 MP 33x44 FSI sensor (used in the X1D)
Old 100 MP 40x54 FSI sensor (used in the IQ3 and H6D-100)
New 100 MP 33x44 BSI sensor (used in the GFX100)
New 150 MP 40x54 BSI sensor (used in the IQ4)

    Can X mount lenses cover a 40x40 (56.6 mm-diagonal/diameter) image circle?
Note that this diameter is only a touch larger than the 54.8 mm diagonal of a 33x44 sensor, which we know the X lenses can cover. If so, or even if they just digitally crop the tiny 6% of the perimeter area that isn’t covered, then the last option would give a 113 MP (or 106 MP with a 6% crop) square image—that product would likely come with a free divorce for many of us! If Hasselblad pulls this off, it will be a brilliant way to get 33x44 “crop format” MF lenses to work on (squared) 40x54 sensors!

If not, then the best I can hope for is a 33x33 crop (75 MP) of the 100 MP BSI sensor in the GFX 100.

Can hardly wait. If there are significant improvements to the current X1D, 100mp or not, I will sell my H6D-100c. I love my Sony mirrorless and am now willing to go mirrorless all the way around. Any advice on where to sell? Thanks.

Wouldn't a 40x40 sensor technically be a cropped sensor from P1's standpoint? Would they open C1 to such a product?

Crazy, rampant speculation is indeed fun.

With their support for Fuji G, but none for Hassy nor Leica S, P1 has abandoned their pretense of supporting other companies’ products by sensor size alone. C1 support is for sale. Fuji paid up. H and L didn’t.

Why not think differently? Everyone is looking at what Sony has on their site, what if Hasselblad commission them to re-configure their high end sensors as... 44x44, for a V1D? Then it could be cropped as 44x33 or remain a square. Yes, I know "reconfigure" a sensor is not a thing, and it still takes design work and manufacturing changes, but the point is Sony can keep the same geometry and associated electronics and fab it in the same places, so in theory, could be a less costly investment.

A fair point, but I presume that fabbing a new sensor is a major endeavor, with major associated up-front costs, probably beyond what Sony would be willing to put at-risk given the niche nature of square aspect ratio photography (we are very atypical photographers and enthusiasts!).

    Wouldn't that be great?

And it's probably not out of the realm of possibility. Maybe we're actually going to see three new products. The X1D direct successor, which seems obvious since they discontinued the 50c. Then a CFV-100C stand alone or as the back on a V1D.

I very much would like a CFV100. And even better, a square one! Well, one can dream. Cropping doesn't do the trick to me. Ever since I changed away from my fat pixel square back I've been missing it.

I liked the Hasselblad social media advertising "see our legacy become your future", together with a V-system like picture. I really do start to hope!

Remember they hired the Lecia designer? Right?

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

I don't understand why people suddenly think that Hassy might drop their H system? I didn't see anything in the teasers to suggest that. Or is this concern a long-term one predating the V1X/X1Dm2 speculation?

The V1X prototype shown at Photokina used XCD lenses and my (hopefully correct) math in my post below suggests that a V1X that uses a square crop of the 53.4x40 mm sensor WILL have the squared sensor covered (or almost covered) by XCD lenses.

Crossing my fingers for 12 more hours...

It looks like a card or accessory flap styled as a dark slide from a 120 back.
I’m sure a lot of people would like to see some kind of hybrid/modular/mirrorless back that fits old 500 series cameras as well as a new slim body to work with current XD lenses and be under £10k but I expect there will probably be a few dissatisfied HB fans after the announcement when their ideal camera isn’t announced.
They are just tools for a job.

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

Hasselblad's latest instagram teaser photo (https://www.instagram.com/p/By2a66VHDOQ/) clearly shows:

    1) A leather (or faux-leather) body, not smooth or textured synthetic black or silver as the X1D bodies are. Just like the classic V (500) bodies.

    2) Chrome or brushed steel edge trim. Just like the classic 500 bodies.

    3) A modern H logo on the side of a camera with an angled rear face. Just like the V1D prototype (https://fstoppers.com/gear/returning...concept-146926).

    4) The tag line "See our legacy become your future."

How could this not be a V1D? Pinch me.

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

I don't understand the desire for a CFV-100C Back. The Hasselblad V Series Lenses probably do not support high resolution digital backs so why is the CFV-100C a likely candidate for the Classic Hasselblad Series? In my experience the CVF-50C doesn't even work well with the Classic Hasselblad SWC. The market for a CFV-100C Digital Back might be a technical camera accepting V digital backs but Phase already produces high resolution backs for technical cameras. I guess we will know shortly!

Re: Hasselblad Teaser and Upcoming Announcement

contax 645 lenses still easily support 80mp backs, so why shouldnt 100 work?
the results of my 80mm F2 on the gfx (same pixel size as the iq180 if i remember correctly) are stunning and makes you wonder why you need phase one and their quite expensive schneider lenses

as for the teasers, looks like its not going to be only one product we gonna see

Somebody reported a "leak" from a Hasselblad dealer: an improved X1D and the zoom. Only 8.5 hours left to speculate wildly ;-).

That dealer really is plugged in. We have all known about a new X1D for 5 months. [G]

How do you fit Contax Lenses to a Classic Hasselblad Body? I doubt that Hasselblad would build the CFV 100C Back to fit Contax.
