Hasselblad CFV ll 50c

Looking at the manual it appears that this comes with a mask for the focus screen on the V series cameras but not a split image focusing screen. I had the original CFV 50 which did come with that and found that focusing without it on a 503 was extremely hit and miss. Handheld live view was of limited use. I sold it to buy the X1D.

So it is a pity that this new version doesn't include a split image focusing screen. looking on e-bay these seem to go from between about £30 to £250. Not sure of the difference in price. But my experience with the older version was that I really couldn't hit focus properly without it handheld. The tilt screen on the new one should make focusing straightforward on a tripod without causing severe back pain by bending down. So maybe handheld focusing on a 503 at waist level will be easier with the tilt screen and live view.

Tempted to go back with it once the regular edition ships. But I really like the idea of the 907x with a 30mm or 21mm. Very tempted.
I use the plain Acute Matt screen with magnifier on my 500CM, rather than a split image focusing aid. Seems to work okay for me. I have a split image screen too but don't really like it, I find the split image section distracting.

I figure with the CFV50c II, focusing magnification and maybe a small hood/magnification chimney will be sufficient for the LCD, I don't think I'll have any issues with the focus on the 500CM screen but that remains to be seen.

Even better: I found I'd reserved enough money to pay for the 907x kit to the point where I had enough left over that a near-mint Hasselblad 500CM body in black finish (with WL finder and Acute Matte screen) was well under the left over. So that's on the way to me at present too. :D

It was probably less expensive than what having my chrome finish 500CM refinished properly would cost...! LOL!

I, however, have a real conundrum. The 500 C/M is black, but the 503CW is chrome. Decisions, decisions.

Will the new back fit on the SWC ?
If you are considering this, I would double check with Hasselblad to verify that it will fit on all vintages. The earlier model SWCs (I think ca. 1963 and prior) had an extra ridge in the light trap that prevented at least some digital backs from seating. This may never have been an issue with Hasselblad backs but let's just say that some forum member got a rude surprise when he first tried to mount his Phase One back onto an early model SWC... :banghead:

A separate issue is how well (or not) the older generation sensors play with the 38mm Biogon, which embodies a symmetrical lens design. Some here have used the SWC/MFDB combination with great success (Grayhand, for example), whereas others find the color cast and astigmatism at the edges and corners to be challenging, requiring stopping down to f/16 to bring under control. YMMV, of course...

According to the manual, it will.

But I'd not be satisfied with the SWC using a digital sensor. The 33x44 format sensor crops too much of the image I want out of an SWC away, never mind questions as to how well the Biogon 38 performs on the large sensor...

That's why I ordered the 907x and the 21mm lens. Crop that to square and you get the FoV of the SWC. :)

My CFV50c back version I did not mount onto an early SWC. I think Hasselblad even said they cannot do anything about. The issue was not because of the hanging battery. We did not even get this far.

Easy. Get a 907x special edition now for the 500 C/M and then the plain CFV II 50c for the 503CW when it is finally available.

Problem solved

Are there any user experiences yet from those that have the 903x/CFV50II?
Would be nice to know whether or not the Mark II has an effective automatic brightness gain control for the rear display, i.e. even if the light is low or very bright, does one have a useful displayed image for composing and focusing?

Not yet ... It just arrived late this afternoon and I only now (at 9:30pm) have the time to open the boxes and charge a battery...

The 907x Special Edition Has Landed

Back, body, and lens assembled now. Nice, nice: very good fit and finish, very nice feel. Meaty and large, but beautifully balanced with the XCD21mm lens on it.

Charging now. I'll learn how to use it tomorrow. :)

Global shutter is apparently not yet technically possible for the 44x33mm format, but rolling shutter readout times are getting shorter. How much rolling shutter will be an issue for the CFV II, will have to be seen.
I notice in the user manual that flash is disabled with electronic shutter. If that's the case, how do you use flash with the back on an old V version Hassy? Or, conversely, how would you use flash if you mounted a V type lens to the 907x?

I cannot speak for the CFV-50c II, but when I shoot with my CFV-50c and a shutterless lens, I trip the lights via remote. My lights are Profoto Air with remote trigger. Shooting with my 501cm and CF lenses, I simply wire the remote to work automatically with the shutter. The remote and back can work together if configured correctly.
