a leica s story and 4th of july

We were in mammoth lakes for the 4th, and the town has a beautiful small parade; so i decided to take my camera with me and shoot some.

I took my S 006 out of the case and snaped on the 70mm cs, as soon as I turned on the camera the AF motor died on the lens!

I took the lens off and put on the 30mm, turned on the camera, and the AF motor died!

I took the lens off and put on the 24mm, turned on the camera, and the AF motor died!

Fuji 50r to the rescue! So I packed the camera and took out the fuji 50R. all worked well.

So today I am packing the lenses and shipping them to Leica USA for repair!

Crikey - that's quite a horror story. Three lenses busted. Are you sure your camera is not at fault ?

At least you had a backup camera, just imagine you were a wedding photographer and that would have happened on a wedding!

Have you not read the many posts about the AF issue with S lenses and how to address the problem ? Or are you just going to wait until your other two lenses fail just when you need them ?

the issue was known for the 007, not 006.
the 007 provides too much juice to the motor, therefore after some time, kills the engine. but well now it looks like its not a 007 exclusive feature, but really strange 3 lenses died at the same time

I don’t recall. $2100-$2400? Leica has given me some very good deals over the years, a used (006) with full warranty, and an inexpensive (007) upgrade. I still feel like I’m ahead. I think it’s the local dealer (NY SoHo) and being lucky about running into product specialists.

Unfortunately, Leica left its S owners with a dilemma. Wait till a lens fails and then Leica will fix it on warranty, or avoid the potential inconvenience/disaster of a lens failure at the worst possible time by sending the lenses in for repair and paying for the cost of the repair. I recall Leica took a lot of heat from the owners of the S system about that approach. I don't disagree with what you decided to do, but $15k is a lot of money to cover a well documented and pervasive defect in a product.

    I think "$2100-$2400" is for 7 lenses. I paid ~ $750 for 3 lenses (1 lens was under warrantee).

Hard to believe all these AF motors passing away without something being systemic with the camera!

I did not know that there were 14 lenses. I know of 24, 30, 35, 45, 70, 100, 120, 180, and the 30-90. Or do you have some in the CS and non-CS version?

Also, Leica will only repair for free if the AF goes bust within 5 years of purchase. I had this happen on the 100 and 120 (both on the S006). My other lenses are ok but older than 5 years. I want to send them in but first need to see that Leica repairs the corroded sensor.

Re: a leica s story and 4th of july

msadat, when the lenses failed, had the lenses been unused for a longer period?

It’s a workaround, but it has been said that it might be a wise idea to manually turn the focus ring a few times before starting the camera. The idea being that the lubricant inside the focus mechanism becomes thick when the lenses are not in use for a longer period of time and that when the camera starts, the focus motor puts too much torque on the focus mechanism to bring the thick lubricant in motion, which in turn makes a plastic part inside the system break apart.

Now unfortunately, there are some misinformed replies in this thread and maybe what I say here is all wrong technically, but ever since I gently turn the focus ring a few times before I start the camera when a lens has not been in use for some time, none of my lenses have failed, so maybe it’s worth a try.

For future reference, here’s a link

    https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic...ment-by-leica/

that may be of interest, regarding the AF failures of the S sytem lenses, which by the way draw beautifully, as you already know.
