    New Product: Arca Swiss Core Leveler 75

    Arca Swiss has been reading my mind and delivered a new Core 75 Leveler that extends the movement of the Core 60 Leveler that I love so much.

    We are pre-ordering, if you would like one, please get in touch.

    I'm so confused by Arca products. What's the difference between this and the cube and the geared head?

    The Core 60 Leveler and the Core 75 Leveler are like miniature versions of the Cube (precisely geared heads that operate in an arc-based manner to maintain the camera position when tilting). They don't have the same degree of movements as the Cube, but they do have a much smaller footprint.

    Steve,

    What is the weight and size difference between the Cube vs. Core 60 and Core 75? Is the Core 75 substantially smaller than the Cube?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

    Jacob, the L60 and L75 will be closer to each other size0-wise than the L75 would be to the Cube.

    Re: New Product: Arca Swiss Core Leveler 75

    I really like the L60 "Mini-Cube" for travel, but feel it is slightly overshadowed in size by a tripod like the RRS TVC24 series, which is turn is too small for a full sized AS Cube (perfect on RRS TVC3 series legs)

    The L75 may just be the goldilocks solution for my TVC24, offering slightly more movement as well. The L60 is a perfect match for the Novoflex triobalance, with its built-in leveler adding more movement while keeping a low profile.

    How do these compare, use-wise to the Arca D4? Are they mostly useful on a tech cam, or flexible and quick enough to be useful on for example XF, Hasselblad etc.?

    My guess the Arca mount is still not centered and therefore useless for panoramic images?

    The L60 mount is centered. Why would the L75 be otherwise?

    It’s not when used with the stock clamp. Only the smaller Arca Swiss rail mount is centered. The normal Arca Swiss mount isn’t.

    Ah. You're right. I never noticed. Well, I will leave the discussion of uselessness to the photographers on this site who shoot panoramas for a living. I wonder what clamping systems they use? I'm of the hand-held school (not shooting at night or with close foreground objects), and am therefore no judge.

    I am sure the L60 is "capable" of handling the XF----but I feel the size of the XF overwhelms the L60, and I never felt comfortable using it for the XF. I got the L60 mini-cube for travel-use with the Cambo and the Fuji GFX----which the L60 handles with no issues. The L70, being more of a goldi-locks option, just might handle the XF better in my mind. We will see. I typically use the AS Cube with the XF.

    As to "quick" or speed of use with a geared head---that's pretty subjective. I have no issues with "quickness" with geared heads---and use the Cube in portrait sessions. The D4 with its geared release is obviously going to be faster, but the attraction with the L60 and the L70 is both of them being compact, lightweight, and precision geared heads modeled after the AS Cube. The L70 is about 1/3 to 1/2 pound (depending on clamp choice) lighter than the D4---that's substantial.

    Re: New Product: Arca Swiss Core Leveler 75

    I think I may a Leveler 75. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit why, but 3 weeks ago I was hiking down from the mountains after a good day of photographing a high mountain lake. I lost focus and stumbled, and the tripod strapped on my shoulder swung around, and the cube hit me in the head. The sharp corner made a gash- lots of bleeding, and needed 6 stitches. Ouch!
    All better now, but the cube hss some very sharp corners. Lesson learned; always keep a cover on it when hiking.
    The new Leveler looks good for the weight savings too, I am totally maxed out on carrying gear with a Cambo and three lenses.

    Is 15 degrees really enough? Seems most of the time more than enough, but certainly there are times when it isn’t even close.

    It is not a race.

    Exalted status in Dante's Inferno is about enjoying, sharing, encouraging (aka "enabling") the best in medium format digital photography.

    Everyone here has been cursed, er, blessed with the ability to enjoy the finer things in life.

    But yes, I expect a 9th Level Purgatory resident to post initial impressions on the Arca Swiss L70 soon.

    Well, I'm pretty intrigued. I'll happily be the first to jump in on this baby. I love my little L60, but I little more mass would be nice. And so would another 5 degrees of movement. But overall, I really like the design of the L60/L75 over the Cube. Maybe part of that is because I've managed to injure myself with the Cube on more than one occasion?

    What would really trip my trigger would be a geared pan...that would just be perfect!

    I've got the L75 Leveler on order. Did I beat you to it, Graham?

    I hope to leave my impressions on the L75 soon.

    So, what do we call this new AS L75 "cube" offering? The L60 has been renamed the "Mini-Cube" already.

    I think a general name change is in order:

    L60: Little Sister Cube
    L75: Big Brother Cube
    Cube: Father Cube

    I have two Daddy Cubes and two Baby Cubes. The Cube is a beast, and I love it. Such a sweet piece of machinery. But it’s big and heavy. The Baby Cubes have had no real problem with anything I own, including the XF and BR240. But I wouldn’t mind just a bit more heft and movement. So the L75 looks about just right.

    Sorta bummed that delivery on the L75 isn't until next year 2020.

    My suggested Cube variant monikers;

    Cube = Cube
    L75 = Midi-Cube
    L60 = Mini-Cube

    - John

    P.S. Glad that Dante already claimed his first L75/Midi-Cube victim. Even happier that it wasn't me!
    P.P.S. Ken let us know which of the RRS dovetails works best for the Graham Welland method of head-to-tripod mounting.

    I'm assuming the first month or so of 2020. No date was given to me by CI other than shipping in 2020.

    It's not like Arca Swiss has to do a bunch of feature releases or revised firmware corrections.

    Oops. Did I say that?

    Many thanks Ken. If and when we have a delivery date and we get closer to that I might actually order the L75.
    The L75 is certainly an interesting tool.

    I heard January/February 2020 according to Arca Swiss. Considering that it took about about 2 months to get the Quick Link (which I highly recommend to make it easier to attach and remove the Cube/Leveler/whatever to/from the tripod), I wouldn't be surprised if that date slipped.

    P.S. Link to Quick Link for those interested (towards bottom of the page): http://rodklukas.com/tag/quicklink/.

    Looks lovely!

    But being as I remain a happy resident of the First level of Purgatory, I'll stick with my Monoball P0 Hybrid which serves my needs very nicely.

    I see an L60 in my future. I'll keep my eyes peeled for used ones in the classified section here. Or, just contact me directly Shameless, but Dante made me do it.

    Mike, are you sure you can afford a whole week ahead of Ken? That's going to be a budget buster. I think that it is only fair that Ken would set that pricing, so I will have to check with him.

    Those are valid points! Now that I think about it, a full week is a bit rich. I may need consider other options. Perhaps I can distract him with some BBQ!

    Think of it as a new iPhone. Just camp outside CI's office for a few days.

    Oh well, I'm in. But I'm keeping the L60 and the p0 Hybrid. To paraphrase Graham, "Bankruptcy before dementia."

    Thanks Joe. That seems to be an appropriate strategy!
