new 2xTC111 said to be very good

    http://www.fotografie.fr/fotoforum/v...php?f=54&t=576

"Probably some other nikon users on this forum might be interested about the new nikon 2xTCIII. Well, I can assure you, it's simply wonderfull.
I received the lens only in the late afternoon so I didn't have the opportunity to do some testshots outside but while doing some testshots inside I am amazed.

    First impressions:
    - Mounted together with my 70-200 AF-S VRII, I see little to no difference in sharpness @ 400mm compared with my 200-400F4 @ 400mm."

Thanks for the update. I have my name on a list to get one. I'm also curious about its use on the 300mm f/4 and the 200-400. Post some photos when you get a chance. Cheers.

The Nikon site shows the AF-S lenses with f/4 as unable to auto-focus.

This has been my experience with the old TC20eII version.

I wonder when the TC14eIII and 17eIII will be released?

Very interesting. Seems to be what I need for my 80-200 AF-S.

Re: new 2xTC111 said to be very good

Personally I would prefer a born 400 f/4 prime, or just a born 400 f/5.6, over any TC solution.
Canon offers both of these lenses, Nikon does not. Patience, patience.

    Here's the compatibility list.
The light loss is two f-stops, so we need a max aperture f/2.8 for the lens to autofocus with the TC-20E III.

Here's a guy who has tested the new TC on the 300mm f/4 AF-S and compared it to the older version. Very impressive:

Nice BIF shots. That's a pretty light 600mm or 900 mm lens. Makes getting a new D300 body attractive. Odd that the table says that "autofocus not possible"? Cheers.

My understanding (gained second-hand from the FM forum, hands-on experience, IIRC) is that AF is not fast if the combination aperture is ƒ5.6 or slower. But the combinations will focus, and some are reporting that many of the "autofocus not possible" combos work just fine.

Brad Hill, an outstanding Canadian nature photographer has one and has been testing it with various lenses. He'll probably be posting his thoughts over the next few weeks. Here's a link to his blog: http://www.naturalart.ca/voice/blog.html

It's here too - I got mine a couple of weeks ago but have yet to give it a work out yet (working a day job really gets in the way of photo fun doesn't it?).

I intend to check with 105VR, 70-200VR II, 200-400VR & 600VR on Sunday and I'll post some results.

Re: new 2xTC111 said to be very good

    Graham,

I am really interested in how it performs on the 105VR—I am not doing much long stuff at the moment and sold my 70–200VR to find other things.

I find the TC-14E II works perfectly well with this lens, and I'd be interested to see if this is the case with the TC-20 III, although the end result, aperture-wise is definitely slow!

    cheers, Kit

Graham: Congratulations. I guess it just hasn't made it to Glazer's in Seattle. I don't know if you saw it from my earlier post, but Brad hill has been testing it and blogging his results: http://www.naturalart.ca/voice/blog.html

It should be awesome on the 600VR! The one that I'd like it to work on is the 200-400VR. Looking forward to your opinion. Cheers, Matt

Not sure how it happened but ProPhoto had it in stock and so what was I to do ... It certainly wasn't through any planning on my behalf so I guess I was just lucky.

Re: new 2xTC111 said to be very good

I just ordered mine today (Beau Photo in Vancouver, BC) and should have it tomorrow. Interestingly, the two lenses I'll use it with apparently won't AF (105mm VR and the 300mm f4), although it certainly looks as if it works with the 300mm (from the links above). Even if I have to go to MF, that's fine though. I'll give it a try this weekend.

    Cheers,

Re: new 2xTC111 said to be very good

I finally got out to test the TC20EIII with my 70-200vr II and 200-400vr on my D3x.

First impressions are that this converter works extremely well with the 70-200! I need to post some examples but I was very impressed at 200mm wide open, plus stopped down to f/8. Very sharp and very very acceptable.

Results on the 200-400 weren't as good and reallybi need to retest in brighter conditions using the D3s. Even on my wimberly with long lens technique there was some noticeable softness but I'm inclined to believe that was more due to me than the converter. AF worked fine although it's light dependent and I can see that it might struggle in anything less than decently bright light.

Pics to follow but so far the results on the 70-200vr far exceed what I've been able to shoot with the 1.7x in the past (2x was horrible before on the VR I lens)
