Went golfing today. Too dark to find the ball by the 18th green...

Jorgen, that is another great one. The concentration, movement, and lighting are perfect.

May I ask how you converted that one to B&W? I'm still not good at consistently getting the look I want out of B&W, and I really like your results.

    Thank you Asabet.

This one was a bit tricky. The only light came from two ceiling windows behind the potter, so his face was completely in the dark. Still, I chose to expose for the whole photo to avoid blown highlights, but I used ISO200, so that I could get the face "out of the shadows" without too much noise. That again resulted in the long shutter time, which worked out nicely, even if the photo is shot handheld. The DR of the S5 probably helped a bit.

I converted to b&w in PS CS3 with standard settings (image, adjustments, b&w, I think). Then I divided the photo into three sections: foreground, background including his body and face, and optimized them individually. For b&w, I mostly use levels and brightness/contrast for adjustments, and curves if I need to use more "force".

I'm on a different computer in another city without PS right now, so this is all from my slightly dysfunctional memory

The little one actually asked his brother to take a picture of his bum. Naturally I had to document the moment .

Since Bangkok is split in two by the Chao Praya river, getting across the water is sometimes inevitable. Nowadays, most people seem to prefer the comfort of Bangkok's never ending traffic jams, but for some, a short voyage in the relatively fresh sea breeze is still a viable option.

For those who choose the maritime way, there are thousands of vessels of all sizes available, charging a modest fee for a few minutes afloat.

    Re: Fun Pictures with Nikon

In Hong Kong, the city that used to be British but now is Chinese, which doesn't seem to matter much, they run a light show every night, using the skyline of Hong Kong island as a kind of "light organ". Fascinating stuff.

It would obviously look even better on video, and better with a D700 than a noisy little D80, but still...

    Thank you, Terry.

Yes, always, except at parties, and when I forget, there's always a shot that I would die to get, like last week, when a singer I know appeared on stage in a white dress and with orange angel wings. The cutest devil you ever saw....

I knew a pj once, who lived by that rule. He had one camera, an F4, and one lens, a 35mm. He's technique was faultless: "I just point the camera in the general direction of the subject, and leave the cropping to the desk."

I don't think he won any prizes though, but neither have I

For some reason, an unforgettable movie dialogue pops up in my head:

Carrie: Don't you ever take off that stupid hat?
Bandit: I take my hat off for one thing, one thing only.
    Carrie: Oh...

    Carrie: Take your hat off.

Unfortunately, Sally Field is never around to ask about my camera

There are some really beautiful, old Portuguese churches in Macau. Only minutes before I took the photo, this one was packed with Chinese, singing psalms and Christmas carols.

OK, this photo may not be a masterpiece but I got to use several Christmas presents at the same time. To wit, my new Gitzo ballhead with RRS clamp and L-bracket, my new ML-3 IR trigger for my D300 and the Parks Sabers lightsaber my son got me for Christmas.

outstanding Erik! The ones of the police in the riot gear and gas masks are positively Orwellian. Your demonstrations seem really intense over there! I have not seen anything like that here...do you have a large Palestinian and Jewish community over there? I think Iceland took in a number of Iraqi refugees, but I am not sure about Palestinians...

Thanks. There isnt a big community of either I think. Sure there are some of both, but I think that lots of the people that was there in the support of the IsraelŽis was hardcore christians from our "bible belt" in the west. There were about 200-300 of them. When it comes to ProPalestinians I think everyone that condemns what Isreal has done the last week came to support. Lots of muslims of course, but plenty of all. The trouble makers werent palestinians. Only 1 of 45 people that was arrested was from Palestine. The majority of the trouble makers is just people that dont botter at all whats going on in the middle east. They just want to trash stuff and fight the police. A bunch of morrons.

    Re: Fun Pictures with Nikon

Yeah, that has been my experience with civil disobedience in general. The kind of people who break things, throw things and destroy property are not the people who actually care about what is going on. They just want an excuse to destroy stuff. The protests against the government here were like that. There were plenty of people who were legitimately angry and protesting, but the people egging the parliament, burning stuff and throwing food, smashing windows etc were almost entirely teenage boys or guys in their early 20s. Overall though, it was quite tame here. I may have posted these, but here are a couple from then...

You can see here how teenage boys are at the frontlines...

While the women and older people tend to take a more passive approach:

    Great photos Erik!

Unfortunately, troublemaking seems to be the new rage, and in addition to the physical destruction, these guys also hurt whatever worthy cause the show "interest" in. Isn't there some deserted island somewhere were those guys could fight each other?

    Re: Fun Pictures with Nikon

I went out to photograph tonight, but Iceland decided to be Iceland. Though it looks like snow in the photos, it was around .5 degrees C, so it was more like rain/snow or slush. It immediately turned to water on whatever it touched. This with a 20-30mph wind meant I had to stick to the weatherproofed lens and the D3. But my metz flash (with leica sca module) is not weatherproof, and it went a little crazy. I forgot to set second curtain as well. It did bring out the snow rather vividly though.

    Stuart,
Whatever you forgot to set, that first one is perfect.

Oh, and btw., it's freezing cold here as well. Under 20 C last night.... shrug

Yeah, some good shots just don't care for the usual flag burning, hate mongering crowds even with chick pics thrown in for spice.
