    D3s and new AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR

Received a new AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR today. It's relatively compact and well-made. Not "pro", but better then "consumer" quality. If you needed one all-around lens to take with you, this might be it. Here's a few images.

These first four are jpegs created from the converted dng's in LR3. Nothing else done to them. What does everybody think? Cheers, Matt

    1. D3s; 28-300mm; 28mm; 1/40s @ f/3.5; ISO 450

    2. D3s; 28-300mm; 100mm; 1/40s @ f/5.3; ISO 1100

    3. D3s; 28-300mm; 300mm; 1/40s @ f/5.6; ISO 1100

    4. No. 3. cropped in

Here's a couple more that have been quickly processed my "usual" way. Thanks for looking. Cheers, Matt.

    2. D3s; 28-300mm; 48mm; 1/1250s @ f/4.2; ISO 200

    3. D3s; 28-300mm; 300mm; 1/400s @ f/5.6; ISO 200

    Cheers, Matt

Hmm, looking good. What pleases me most is that we can see by the reflection in the cropped-in shot of this one that you're hand-holding it at these values.

In the first one your ipod looks like a bobbehead doll!

I thought this might be a neat lens for travel or a one trick pony sort of lens. Interesting to see what you think after a little more time with it.

Michael/Jason: So far, I'm pleased. The IQ on this one seems quite good for it's range, price, and size. It could be the perfect travel lens when you want a really light, handheld, Nikon kit.

I'll be posting some more as i use it. I also ordered a 24-120mm F/4G ED VRII, which should be shipping soon. It's higher quality, but with less range. It will be interesting to compare these two.

    Thanks for commenting. Cheers, Matt

I found this yesterday: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28-300mm.htm. He's usually informative, entertaining, and unreserved. Cheers, Matt.

Steve: I think it's quite good. Photographer...so, so. It's the lens I had on the D3s for those city photos yesterday. Very useful lens. Cheers, Matt.
